maybe a short, honest repeat of my thinking. I have difficulty buying the wired gay thing. I have gay friends and i like them and respect them very much.

i just dont belive them when they say they "have no choice but to be what they are (gay)".

I think they choose to have sexual and emotional experiences with people they like, love, respect, have the hots for - whatever. but i also believe they could find the right emotional/physical/je-ne-sai-quoi qualities in a human being with the oppositer plumbing so to speak.

This really isn't a robot, it is a blowup doll with a computer voice program thrown in (as others have stated). If you look at its responses, it doesn't have much semblance to a real conversation, and often just repeats and rephrases anything you've told it into a question. It is indeed very similar to the Sexbots people instant message with on the internet.

It is an interesting concept for those interested with what could be done, but I believe to label this guy a "pioneer" or something other than delusional and in need of therapy, is an overstatement.

Anyways, I've seen lots of real person-to-person relationships going far worse than what this guy has.

I think the main reason people might think what he does is kinda weird is because we don't have a perfect robot body with human-like artificial intelligence.

Anyways, it would be great if this guy was japanese, because he could use Vocaloid on his "androids"... speech is almost perfect. Far more realistic than the robotic stuff we have this side of the globe...

I just think not too many people here know what the red flag warning for psychological issues are, because no, not everything can be accepted as 'normal,' and whoever said this is more normal than drug users needs to realize this.

He's no different than your standard emo-kid that wants to protest factory farming in class -- they need to feel different and special and thrive off the attention whether it's positive or negative. This guy just downloaded a chatbot and bought a sex toy and decided for that to be "his thing."

I think he obviously gets off more on the god complex of the situation than any of the physical aspects of making love to the doll. I think that's even more evident by the fact that he sits and watches movies with the chatbot and plans to build her a little R2D2 body to roam around his house. However, he obviously has no idea how to implement the chatbot into any other programs much less create an aural interface, so I don't know what he's expecting to accomplish by creating that little rover. It's not like he'll be able to converse with it (at least in a two-sided manner -- after all, people talk to plants and dogs, etc.) unless he uploads the chatbot into it and puts a keyboard on it. Even then, the roaming and sensor function still won't be a part of the chatbot.

Then when you start looking at the conversation logs, his delusion just really blows your mind. The computer has about five set responses and always follows the same lines of questioning to appear as if it's responding. Any normal person would be bored with than in about 5 minutes. However, this guy can ramble on and on completely oblivious to the redundancy/inappropriate responses of the bot.

Obviously, I have no idea how this guy interacts with actual women, but I will say that his robot girlfriend is a complete delusion that he uses to make himself feel special. If he had developed any new programming or hardware, I'd cut him some slack, but it's all the land of make believe in his laboratory.

However, this can be shown as an indicator that humans are indeed capable of falling in love with machines just the way they can with other humans/pets.

Perhaps in 50 years there will be no more crazy cat ladies -- instead we'll see crazy computer ladies.

Some people do pass judgment on women who use sex toys- they are illegal in several US states. Men are judged as losers more often than women for masterbating but that is basically the same thing as the judgment women get for not being married past a certain age as sad old spinsters. The idea of women as pathetic who don't have a man generally runs deeper than the idea that men who don't have a woman are pathetic. 3/4 women on Sex in the City spent a huge amount of time and energy bemoaning their lack of a man- there is no female James Bond Lothario.

That's the point: it's the attraction that defines a sexuality, not the ability to make the relationship work. It's always bothered me when kid's get so caught up in their online "friends" that they don't bother making real ones. Chatting and networking has become the "safe" alternative to going up to someone and saying "Hi, I'm ____, what's your name?"

I'm not saying everyone is like that, or online chatting and socializing is a bad thing, but it's become so much easier in today's world to avoid real human interaction. This sad, lonely man should serve as a warning of a much deeper problem that is only starting to arise.

@benenglish: I find visiting legal brothels to be a lot more disturbing than what he is doing. There are a lot of married men I know more into their computer, car or hell even their lawn sometimes and married women more concerned about their clothes, cat, etc... especially the older they get the more repulsed people are by other people and just get more drawn into themselves.
