I think Mozilla is just scared because Safari is a big threat to them. I am really happy someone came out with something that is better than Firefox. As far as having it shoved down our throats, I had a choice as well as everyone else did to click on 'NO' when it asks to download Safari. Safari loads faster than Firefox and from what I have seen less technical problems.

cjmaher

@Mandatory_Field: Do you have a clue? Apple Software Update can be set to never check for updates, can be set to ignore selected updates and will NOT install Safari without the user actually clicking Install. How are these features different from the ones you highlighted for Windows Update? Do you even use Apple Software Update? I prefer FireFox, but when I installed iTunes, I gave Apple permission to seed software. They don't force install it as with IE7.

@Topcat: "IE7 was a "critical update" in the sense that it fixed a ton of the stupid security holes of IE6. It is not analogous to software being shoved down your intertube that you do not have installed already; even Firefox auto-updates."

Wow, what a great pro-M$ argument. IE6 is crap and so is IE7. Safari isn't shoved down your intertube, they give you an easy way to install it if you wish. Please.

cschanner

An updater is meant for updates, updates of the software you installed, and installing new or unwanted stuff is NOT an update and should not be done.
Incidentally, I selected 'no I do not want automatic updates' when I installed quicktime and lo an behold what do I discover? it installed "apple update"..
It's nasty to install stuff in an underhanded way and it's a clear sign something is foul when a company does that and a sign that you should not trust the software they push.

Wwhat

All of you people bitching that this isn't a big deal, take this into consideration.

Instead of Updating an existing program on your computer they are adding ANOTHER one, and having the accept box checked by default. They are setting it up so that people that are used to it being just a simple update install software they did not want to their computer.

Simple solution, delete iTunes, use ephPod to transfer songs to your devices, use KBPlayer / VLC to watch quicktime movies, and keep enjoying Firefox.

Who needs more software that actively seeks and takes over all of your file associations?

skilled1

Post an article saying anything even slightly negative towards Apple, and the usual suspects come out from the bridges in droves to defend. Plain and simple, Apple it trying to get more people to give Safari a shot, but its a shady way of doing it. Try ads in iTunes and such first before getting the rubber gloves out.

The 'they can just click out' argument is moot because the 'average' user (PC and Mac) is not going to know the difference and click proceed anyway because this is in 'APPLE SOFTWARE UPDATE'. But it's not really 'Apple Software Update' if they are pushing software you never used/asked for in the first place, is it?

TKWarrior

I just accidentally installed it. I didn't think Apple would install new programs through apple update so I didn't even read it until it was too late. That unwanted piece is gone now though. I'm not necessarily opposed to trying a new browser, but I won't even use FF3B4 because I miss my extensions too much, and installing it behind my back is a definite red flag, Apple!

The problem is that the software doesn't give you any option to say "Please stop presenting these particular updates, as I don't want them presentetd to me." Even Windows Update allows you to do that. Software UPDATERS are a good thing, as they allow the vendor to get patches out in a hurry (particularly in the case of an outstanding vuln that is being exploited), and they save me from having to look on a bunch of discrete sites to find updates for all the myriad applications that I use. What pisses me off about this particular situation is that the Apple updater has been presenting the iTunes + Quicktime option on machines where I don't have nor want iTunes (I do on other boxes), and doesn't have an option to make that go away. That's just egregious and bad software design for updaters. And Apple are supposed to be the UI masters, so how come?

Mandatory_Field

Really... malware? Microsoft does this all the time with their products. I'll do the update and it installs stuff you don't even want and it doesn't even always give you the message that Apple gave you. Yea... you chose yourself to install Safari. A window popped up and said "Hey! This update will install Safari. Do you want to do that?!" and you said "Ok, install Safari" and now it's being called malware? And big deal Mozilla, so we downloaded it. Even though I have IE7, Safari and Mozilla on my laptop I still only use Mozilla unless I have to do something that Microsoft only allows you to use IE with.

If Mozilla released an installer called "Mozilla Software Update", I'd expect to see Firefox, Thunderbird, and everything else they produce. I certainly wouldn't freak out if it pushed out T-Bird (which I don't use) in addition to FF.

sumocat

Just another forum for Apple haters to vent... This doesn't border on shit. Last time I checked, Malware was automatically installed on your machine, and it sucked. Safari is at least a good product (even if you choose a different one), and it's also just presenting you an option to get it... not installing it without your permission. Consider it free marketing for Apple. If you don't want it, don't download it... it's just like seeing ads on Gizmodo... if you don't want the product, don't click the ad...

Why does Mozilla have a CEO anyway? How does the company even make any money? This just seems like an opportunity to take a stab at Safari eating up more market share now that it's been gaining momentum on Windows machines and taking away downloads from his company. He read a story that put Safari in a negative light, and is trying to light a fire under it.

News flash! All of you complaining about Apple pushing Safari onto your computers are a bit clueless. Here's a fact- if you have iTunes installed on your PC, you already have Safari, in a sense. At least the rendering engine, which is webkit. It's part of iTunes and drives the iTunes Store; same set of application frameworks.
All this is doing is giving you the option of installing the app that will tap into that same set of frameworks. This isn't a virus or malware.

Now, that said, I think there are some valid points being made here, such as it perhaps not being checked on by default. Apple has been doing that for a while with Software update on Mac OS X. Here's the thing though- The average (Mac) user will want about 90%+ of the updates that pop up in SWUP, so I'd rather have the 90% I want checked and have to manually uncheck the 10% I don't want than the other way around. Maybe Apple should reverse this for the Windows crowd though, since it's obvious this is seen as an attempt to undermine their computers.

As for the Mozilla CEO comments, if he were a neutral party, I'd be able to take it more seriously. As it is though, he has much to lose from this type of distribution system, so of COURSE he's upset about it. He's probably just mad he doesn't have a way to get Firefox onto everyones computers that is as easy.

mm2270

I'm really getting fed up with auto-updates. It's fine if the program checks for an update when it starts (and lets you disable that feature easily too) but seperate programs piss me off. Apple's been doing this for a while, When I had my old iPod Mini it was so difficult to prevent one of the newer shitty iPod Utilities to install with iTunes when all I wanted was the one that came with my iPod. Google does this shit too with auto-updates. Theres a seperate program to update Google Earth, and it tries to push Google desktop on me.

It's almost as annoying as Adobe Bridge.

lafond66

The insult is the constant default on all these "updates" for installing different programs. Why should I have to do the work in order to relieve myself of their bloatware? The injury is that it's Safari, truly a third rate program on the PC platform.

Example 41: I right click the back button on FF, see the 16 pages I've already been and can slide down and click to whatever page I want. No add-ons needed (there aren't any for the PC platform, by the way), no separate, superfluous menu.

I right click on Safari's back button and, oh yeah, right click isn't exactly what you'd call a "mature concept" in Apple world. Must be too busy working on some multi-touch UI which accelerates the dumbing down of computing while increasing RSI.

lianna_g

Go back to the days when pop-ups were so common place that Yahoo would snap up crap in your face without a thought. If you say it's just fine for apple to toss whatever the f*k they want on your machine just because you have one app from them, you are also saying that just because you visit MS's website they should be able to popup screens asking to install whatever the hell they want, Visiting ESPN? Well then lets pop something up asking if you want to install sports ticketer 2000 with google assbar and 20 other apps you never wanted. Oh you have assbar? Well check out bowling elves!
This is a slippery slope you dip shits are just all too happy to go down. You're either too young or too stupid to grasp this so I'm not sure why I bother.
Whatever it means I'm glad I have a couple of fine tools at work as a sysadmin.

No big deal! So what? How is that any different from the offer to install a Google or whoever's toolbar that seems to be so common during new software installs. The toolbar offer comes up pre-checked to do the install by default. Indeed how does this differ from other software installs, say for a new scanner, that tend to dump other vendors software onto your machine as "bonus" applications. Geez just pay attention during the install. Mozilla's CEO is just another waah, waah internet crybaby and needs to cut some deals with other software vendors so Mozilla can pop up as a pre-selected default install when the latest and greatest home office ap or game is installed.

Kingteddybear

matt buchanan, your post once again proves you and gizmodo are apple suckers. And for those ppls, who comparing this with 'Microsoft did this with IE' is dumb example. IE is part of Windows, the same way Safari is part of MacOSX. Microsoft or Apple should only auto push update (With installed softs)with their OS only. What apple is doing is WRONG! It's not a matter of 'just uncheck the option' or 'don't install this'. Apple Software Update should only update pre-installed software. Most users don't want Safari that's why they didn't install before but apple's auto push for Safari, when even we don't have safari on our machine is WRONG. PERIOD!

doshomik

I think what is different about the google toolbar or the trail versions with Adobe Reader and the Apple tactic is that they (Adobe) are not calling it an update. They push the options when you install the software for the first time and devote an entire confirm screen to it (rather than a list of things like how quicktime wants to change your file preferences and take over playing every media file by default). The word update suggests that something new for something existing is coming through. But this is just something new that wasn't on your computer already. The USDA has regulations on food labels that differentiate between 'soup' and 'stew' and it's sincerely enforced (because it matters to someone in the marketplace). Apple is going to ruin it for everyone by forcing the situation where updates and installation of software is government regulated.

On a side note, does Safari run in the background even after closing the program like iTunes does? That sounds even a bit more like malware.

Brookespeed

I think this practice is very annoying but I can see where it has some justifiable uses. Most people use Adobe Reader don't pay a dime to use it, after all it's freeware. So I can see the justification of them scoring a kickback from Google or Ask or whoever to have their Internet Toolbar sneak it's way onto your machine (thu, honestly it's still pretty crappy of them).

In the case of iTunes, Apple makes money off of just about everyone who has it on there computers. Hell, its best feature is the simple way to purchase music, movies and TV shows. So to make the case for them to sneak a copy of Safari onto unsuspecting users is very hard to justify and boarders on 'dickish'

Johnny Chimpo

The only reason I didn't get it is because every single time that damn "updater" pops up, I have to un-check the iTunes/Quicktime and just update the standalone Quicktime.

Why can't I make it stop asking me about the iTunes option? That's as annoying as the Safari thing, just less shady.

FranklinTurtle

Nothing like a little back door love from Apple.

The quotes do not make him sound pissed, however. The points are well taken. However, it is not an unusual practice. Anyone who has updated their copy of Acrobat Reader only to find Google Toolbar installed knows that companies sneak things in through the update features.

I have actually started making a practice of removing from the registry any update application, including from Apple, Adobe, and Sun. Not only do I not have to worry about back door lovin, I also do not get those stupid update messages anymore.

Monty
