@frigg: Couldn't agree more. As long as the cable can deliver the voltage from the wall to the equipment without significant loss then it has zero impact on quality. All AC voltage is transformed into lower voltage DC inside the power supply of electronics. Good electronics will regulate this voltage to within measurable tolerances of the system. The only usefull upgrade to a power cable is a fuse!

Xenocide

@Virtual_Dynamics:

"As the inventors of this unique technology we were quite pleased to see the interest here at Gizmodo and thought we should shed a little light."

As an Amish person (Mennonite, actually), I thought I should shed a little light as well.

PEOPLE: THIS IS A TOTAL RIP-OFF. IT'S WORSE THAN PEAR AUDIO CABLES BECAUSE THE AUDIO SIGNAL DOES NOT GO THROUGH THE ELECTRIC CORD.

Yes, power influences audio quality, but is determined at the source (what comes out of the wall or from some sort of power conditioner) and by the power supply and other components inside a piece of equipment. But the simple cord that transports power from the wall to your equipment is as inconsequential to the sound as is a sticker with the company logo on the box. "Replace this sticker and get better sound" would be just as valid a claim.

Cords that come with equipment meet a certain spec, and no cord from any 3rd party that is any more expensive will make any bit of difference to the function or sound of the device. None. Again, no audio goes through this cable, it merely connects power from the wall to the electrical carnival inside the device itself. The equipment matters, the power source matters, but the cord doesn't.

frigg

You know, I'm thinking that if you wanted some quality power going to your audio coponents, you'd invest in a good UPS capable of dealing with under-voltage and over-voltage. It would probably also help if it said UPS is capable of shaping the AC current to be as close to a sine wave as possible (forgot the technical term there...) I don't see any pros for replacing the power cable on the other hand...I doubt the manufacturer used conductors that aren't large enough. If they did, the cable would get warm under load.

jamesuschrist

My cat is an audiophile. I can't tell the difference between a $30 cable and a $200 cable, but he can. So I told him if I bought the $200 cable he wouldn't eat for a week-- and then suddenly he was fine with the $30 cable idea. He hasn't chewed through them at all, although he puked on them a couple of times. (He claimed it was hairballs but I knew he really wanted the better cables and was sending me a message.) Looks just like that cat, too.

You know, I could see spending extra for some really good cables.

But I don't think my definition of "really good cables" is going to have much in common with the audiophiles.

I'm thinking of fairly thick insulator with a kitten-proof and kid-proof armor on the outside. I'm thinking of cable management features like an integral set of hooks to bundle up the extra cable from either side (machine-side or wall-side). And I'm thinking of the connectors being designed such that the plug on the end has significant structural reserve beyond the fairly rational yank-force on the cable, such that when you yank things by accident, the connector slides out of the socket before it knocks your gear on the floor and breaks it and no matter how many times you yank it out by the cord, it'll still work.

But, clearly, salespeople who are expert at selling crap for thousands are cheaper than industrial designers who can design a nice ergonomic cable.

cmowire

The funniest part about these posts is watching for the closet audiophiles to pop out and start getting all defensive.

*reformatted because it won't seem to post with the linking*

As the inventors of this unique technology we were quite pleased to see the interest here at Gizmodo and thought we should shed a little light. This "Cat tore up my Power 3" was started at head-fi.org. Reading through the entire thread you'll see that the author, in the end understood the value of this invention.

The invention in this cable is a unique process called dynamic filtering. You can learn about how this unique process works to lower distortion in electronics. We are currently undergoing a large test with the University of Toronto that we'll be posting publicly later this spring, shedding light on the technologies, and how and why they work.

There are also reviews of some of our more expensive cables on head-fi that you may find of interest.

Either way, we hope you take the time to learn about how these electronics work, particularly the problem of microphonics in audio cables and components.

Thanks,

I agree with Way. Virtual Dynamic's website and marketing are what sell this cable.

Read this: [www.virtualdynamics.ca]

It is as if they are screaming "We are ripping you off" to the customer in the advertisement itself. Straight from the Virtual Dynamics P3 power cable page:

"A growing trend in the audio industry is to price products outrageously high and then see what happens. Prestige established through price."

"Consider the following; if I take a bottle of wine and charge $10,000 for it, will that make the wine taste any better?"

"Our thinking is, instead of listening to our sales pitch, listen to your system with the Power Three installed."

"Can a $350 Power Cable out perform a cable costing $2,000 or more?"

They even say that they are not going to provide a sales pitch. I visited the site to see what claims they could be making about a POWER cable (audio cables are a different story although often overpriced). What did I find? No discussion of line noise, ground loops, or anything close (not that the cable would solve either in the first place to begin with).

Frucci said it all... deep down inside, you know.

As the inventors of this unique technology we were quite pleased to see the interest here at Gizmodo and thought we should shed a little light. This "Cat tore up my Power 3" was started at head-fi.org. Reading through the entire thread you'll see that the author, in the end understood the value of this invention.

"the author's final post" VV
[www.head-fi.org]

The invention in this cable is a unique process called dynamic filtering. You can learn about how this unique process works to lower distortion in electronics. We are currently undergoing a large test with the University of Toronto that we'll be posting publicly later this spring, shedding light on the technologies, and how and why they work.

@FightingChance: What you say about digital cables is TOTALLY true. It either works or it doesn't. Case in point... I bought a 50' HDMI cable for my front projection home theater. Paid about $80 at Fry's for it, for fifty feet. Works perfectly, and I'm sending 1080p over it from a PS3.

At the same time, I spent $250 on Transparent Cable speaker wiring for my Monitor Audio and Speakercraft surrounds for this same theater , after comparing these cables to cheap Radio Shack wire. I did notice a difference. But in comparison to many high end cables out there, I didn't spend all that much. It makes sense to spend a little more on analog cables, but you quickly get to a point of diminishing returns on these things. My local home theater installer was nice enough to loan me a length of the good stuff to try first.

redman042

@dhaberer: Partially; cables that carry digital information can indeed be bought without issue at the cheapest prices because 1's and 0's are very easy to transmit without error. Analog cables can influence quality by a small bit due to their construction, but no where near what high end cable makers would have you believe. Honestly, I like the better connectors, jackets, and workable copper in 'pricier' cabling versus Home Depot's bulk cable, but the price premium I'm willing to pay is very small.

FightingChance
