@uberfu:
Comcast actually sent me a nasty E-mail a while back because I supposedly downloaded an episode of Battlestar Galactica using Bit Torrent, crying about copyright infringement blah blah blah, they threatened to cut off my service. The thing that got me so mad was that they are so retarded as to make available only the first part of a two part episode of that show on their "on demand", I waited two weeks for them to update it and they never did, so i used the means available to me to see the conclusion. My feeling is they need to get off their over paid lazy asses and provide a great service for their highly priced cable , if not, then mind their own business of raping the consumer with the monopoly on broadband they have for now, but hopefully not forever.

TNTBW

This is good AND bad.
Good because people will have more info on the service they are paying for. Thus allowing them to choose and pay for good services.

On the other hand, good ISPs will end up having a harder time being so... because if too many heavy P2P users migrate to this or that ISP, they'll eventually have some bandwidth problems if they don't upgrade their equipment....

Bokusatsu_Tenshi

Everyone is screaming against Comcast - and according to Azureus' Wiki - Comcast only block Seeding - but only then to a certain extent_ This doesn't seem to help the case against Comcast_

I'm not too happy with them by any means - they are my service provider for internet/TV - but they may be throttling in certain locations and not others_

I can Seed/ upload/ download torrent all day long_ I typically have mine capped so they stop at a certain point - but otherwise not too many issues_

I have been talking with folks who have Comcast in various areas of the country and what we're noticing is more of a limitation on the total advertised thru-put_ My account says I should be getting 6Mbps down and 256Kbps up and I haven't noticed anything near these marks_

In contrast I work at a major university and they are on an Internet Backbone [2 of them in fact] and the up/ down thru-put is significantly different from home to office_ In one regard this should be normal - but I can use a traffic Stat monitor [same App at work and home] and it shows just how much incoming and outgoing traffic is passing by_

Comcast is a giant whore-poration_

uberfu

@Zenshai: If you're using Az, check to see if the automated throttling is enabled. They have a function built whose purpose (I think) is to try and defeat the bittorrent throttling. You can look in the lower right corner to see what you're current throttle limit is. It gimped my downloads til I turned it off, but then again, I'm not a power downloader, so they probably don't mind as much that I max out my connection for 10-20 minutes every once in a while.

on a possibly related note, i've noticed within the last few weeks that my internet will lag horribly for no apparent reason (with no BT running). It's hard to tell if i'm being throttled by some bad algorithm, or its just shitty comcast service. the latter is always possible since they basically feel free to split their connection signals until it becomes so bad people complain. and then they usually try to tell you it would all be fine if you just had better wiring to your unit (technically possible, but it wouldn't be necessary if they didn't fuck up the source signal so much to being with)

Accelerata

I've worked for a few ISP's over the years. I have to chime in on this.
1st off there is no such thing as a legitimate torrent.
Before you flame me hear me out.
What the legitimate companies are doing is foisting off the bandwidth charges onto the internet provider instead of hosting a file server.
Its like people who use their residential service for business.
Its not what it was designed for.

I have a real problem with people saying this is a net neutrality issue. Its not its about a network managing the way data is run over the network not the content of the data.

Save the cries of net neutrality for when ISP want to direct legitimate content based off pay for preference. That's net neutrality.

This whole torrent argument boils down to I want something for free and now I can't get it.

Even so called legitimate torrents don't want to pay bandwidth costs they would rather have the ISP's bare that cost.
Yet people are the first to scream if the ISP raises the prices.

Save the cries of net neutrality for when ISP want to direct legitimate content based off pay for preference. Thats net neutrality.
Please don't say well they didn't say I couldn't do that. Actually they usually do people just choose to ignore it. Most ISPs in their terms of service forbid running a server and when you do torrents you've become a server. It isn't poorly written it isn't confusing. People just don't want to read it.

The problem is, BitTorrent users ARE actually gobbling up bandwidth from other broadband customers. Especially in rural areas where bandwidth is at a premium.

It could be worse. Comcast suspended my connection for excessive bandwidth usage, citing a terms of service agreement that may be changed at any time.

This isn't too much of an issue yet, however with HD video becoming more prevalent I think more users will have similar problems in the future.

tanukineri

pretty sure ACS in Alaska recently started doing this. first it was just bittorrent traffic. but now it seems that when i have bittorrent running at all my entire connection goes in the shitter.

spending $100/mo for a 3Mb internet connection is already pretty outrageous... even more so when i find out i'm not actually paying for a real-life internet connection at all but rather a "whatever-the-phone-company-thinks-i-should-be-allowed-to-use-it-for-based-on-random-whims" connection.

good thing my contract just ended. going to move to a cable modem as soon as i can get the line installed. faster and for $30 more than i already pay i can get cable television and a DVR (less torrents needed then anyway).

x23

Awesome.
I mean the Wiki link not the fact that the bastard POS ISPs are trying to choke out torrents.

It's a good link for the fact that we have Cox where I am and it looks like they only limit bandwidth for accounts with a high traffic volume, and don't put a cap on torrents or deny seeding. Good 2 know, as I have had suspicions of Cox sabotaging my torrents but I think at the time, now that I think about it, it must have been a setting on my end.

Out2gtcha
