I got a package from dash on Monday - I was excited to see something from them but confused because it seemed to small. It turns out it was a Dash-branded 1-to-3 car power adapter, along with a letter promising that I'll have the real unit "in my hands" on the 27th.

morcheeba

Unless they have a life-time option, it's a non-starter. This is essentially killing the TiVo as well. Although the gleeful investors like to stroke--um their chops at the prospect of being a leach on my monthly bill for eternity, someone should just do an NPV for the expected life of these devices, say 3-4 years, and let us buy that. I hate dealing with the subscription model, and it makes getting this thing as a gift kind of insulting. Here you go, along with this gift, feel free to start making payments on this obligation to make this widget work.

Here's also a killer to this entire business model. Bluetooth. One of these days the geniuses at the other GPS companies will realize that they can use your existing cell phones, for which you already pay a monthly fee, to tie into data. So... after a bluetooth connection is made with your phone, your GPS can send a ping of its longitude/latitude/time-stamp to say Garmin's database in the sky, which can then be shared with everyone else. And while I'm dreaming, it could also download/update the latest maps to your GPS unit.

So this will be a boon to a small minority of folks that need it, but most folks will take a big pass because of the onerous business/monthly subscription model shoved down your throat.

Also, it doesn't draw/update as pretty a map as many other GPS units.

How long until someone figures out a mashup device for google maps (Street view anyone) + GPS + bluetooth/android mix and kills this entire industry?

jkheit

Looks like a fantastic product that shows the direction all GPS units are likely to go. Still, until some competition comes in to lower the price, I will have to wait on the sidelines.

(Then again, knowing how cheap I am, I probably will continue to look up directions on a $2 map for a long time to come.)

Monty
