I'd like to see Apple implement an option to schedule Time Machine backups by hour and date. As well I'd like to see Apple implement the option to set the maximum storage space alloted for Time Machine backups. Otherwise at least make it possible for Leopard's Disk Utility to partition the internal Time Capsule drive with out having to physically remove it and format the drive manually thus avoiding voiding the Time Capsule warranty. After all I would like to have 500 GB available to Time Machine and the other 500 GB for Final Cut Studio and Maya library/scene files. Then I could use an external connected hard drive (same 1 Terabyte storage size) to archive the Time Capsule internal drive in case of drive failure. Basically providing a RAID like solution.

imagine-engine

Yeah ok schedule your backups and don't do them every hour! Use Arconis or Handy Backup or something else that's not banging away on your system every hour. If you need it every hour just save the things you're working on, the chance on any given hour of your system crashing to pieces, destroying all your work isn't worth being slowed down that much.

Hello_Newman

You obviously have never used a mac. There are many other options for backing up OS X. Back up is one example that is free. No one is "forced" to use Time Machine, but most people choose to because it is seamless and easy to use. I agree that it could be more configurable, but it works great for the majority of mac users' needs.

justinpe

While it may sound like overkill, I have a cron running on my linux box at work that backs up my development directories every 10 minutes. Backups are one of those things that nobody cares about until they need. When you are in the groove loosing an entire hour of code is brutal, let alone a day. Having been burnt in the past, I am OK with default settings that are aggressive.

crombenevolant

I stopped using time machine because
a) I dont delete files that I need. Its that simple. I also save stuff as copies before I mess with it.
b) it slowed down my computer every hour
c) its not bootable. It doesnt do much good when my HD fries (the reason to have a backup) and I have to wait for a new one, then install the OS, then access my files. I need my files NOW when doo doo happens.
d) superduper just copies my drive, I can get what I need, I can plug and play from the backup drive no problem
e) I still dont see why you need Time machine unless you are the type of person who says "OOPS! I deleted that important file! OOPS! Ive been working on this for two hours and I just realized I screwed up at the beginning! OOPS! I deleted all my contacts!

Sucks it doesnt let you change the options but then again Macs are designed for people who want stuff to "just work" and cant handle the complicated setups and options that come with a PC. If they let you change them most likely youd just screw it up and then have the same gripes most mac users have about PCs.

archercc

there are about 17 apps out there that let you change the preference file needed to change the Time Machine backup frequency. with an app it might take 5 seconds to change. without an app... possibly as much time as 30 seconds to make the change.

hourly i find is fine for backing up to another internal SATA drive. barely noticeable at all.

on machines that backup to external drives or over the network i find that every 12 hours works perfectly fine.

the only time Time Machine has annoyed me was when i was working on some large audio files and it kicked in... if only there was a giantass OFF button i could have used...

the lack of true boolean rules in both Spotlight and Time Machine are *incredibly* annoying however. i'd much rather be able to set up what i *do* want to have backed up or searched than have to add all the things i *don't* want backed up or searched.

x23

Time Machine started off fairly quick and unobtrusive. Then the external HD I was using for Time Machine filled up, as it was destined to do eventually. Then I really started to notice the thrashing of the drive heads as TM deleted old backups and wrote new ones to a drive with virtually no free space. I can imagine what little free space was available was highly fragmented. Evidently users are expected to backup to drives several times larger than the data they're backing up and periodically wipe them and start from scratch.

bregalad

I used to just run a bash command, via terminal, that backed up the folders/files I wanted. I would run it manually, but I could have just done it as a script/cron process.

"free reign" is redundant. In the usual sense, a monarch "reigns". In a monarchy, sovereignty (note ...reign...) is in the monarch. The monarch can do whatever he or she wants, i.e. the king is never wrong, and don't give me any crap about England, etc. If you use the phrase: "free reign", you sound like a moron. Just like if you say: "I could care less" or "for all intensive purposes". The phrase: "free rein" means that the software program (horse) is doing whatever it wants, whenever it wants to do it, without input from the rider (user). Free REIN is very appropriate. As many have said, if you are going to correct someone's grammar, usage, etc., you had better be right. That is a weak defense of an originally ignorant correction to an actually correct term.

PennyG

@nutbastard: Free reign is wrong. It is "free rein." That is the correct usage. It is a metaphor.

However, to give Nut credit where due, "free reign" does make sense, as applied, if you use the "reign" as a noun and not an intransitive verb, and you use "free" in the legal meaning of "unencumbered by". In that sense, the program has unencumbered authority to back up every hour no matter what else is happening. Hence, it has free reign.

However, the "phrase" "free rein" refers to a lack of guidance or dictate. "Free reign" is a convenient and probably unintentional corruption of the original phrase.

@Johnny Chimpo: You can choose to leave out as little, or as much of your system as you choose. For instance, I leave out all OS files because 1) I can just reinstall my OS and 2) I don't have faith that the restored OS files will work anyways. It's even a checkbox option.

The way the Time Machine backup works is like this:

Mac OS X has a service called mds, which sweeps your filesystem for directory access/changes, and logs these all the time. Since it only queries on the directory level, it is very fast and efficient. Once an hour, a backup service looks through this log, and determines if any directories' files have changed. If they have, it queries those specific directories for files with modification dates in the last hour, then syncs those changes to the Time Machine, creating an incremental backup.

In this way, you do not specify what to back up, Time Machine knows what has changed, and backs it up for you, but only as needed.

It doesn't bother me because what I do is each weekend is, I connect the Time Machine drive for about 10 hours, and let it do another weekly incremental backup on its own. Then I turn it off and it sits disconnected till next weekend. My home machine is a digital hub, so its mainly just music and photos and such, and a weekly incremental backup is sufficient.

ludwigk

"Even tasks that seem fun-resistant can become more satisfying if you give free reign to your imagination."

"As horses and carriages have become rare as a means of transport, the metaphor controling or restricting their movement with the help of reins has lost its transparency. The homophone reign, in the sense of the exercise of power, is in the process of supplanting it.

The thoroughness of the re-interpretation in the occurrences of the rein > reign substitution varies. Free reign is entering mainstream usage. Reigns of power, on the other hand, only makes sense superficially; the plural remains unaccounted for. "

nutbastard
