I also think guns should only be available by rental. It probably wouldn't prevent guns getting into the wrong hands, but for the most part, you'd be able to track the guns better.

Personally I think guys who want to use weapons against society should be more creative, try to have fun with it, use medieval weapons, make your own, dress yourself up in a spiky outfit and just run through people. What I would do is create an outfit with dozens of poison pins attached and go around hugging people till I had gotten what I wanted. Guns, ha! Boring!

@ErrantHero: Actually, there are numerous situations where that 560m/s difference is significant. A .22LR at 1080m/s is probably not a major concern if I've got a Kevlar helmet and Type I body armor, as long as it hits the armor. That same bullet, traveling at three times that speed, will probably defeat Type II armor, if the bullet doesn't just splatter on impact. (7.62 Tokarev will defeat Type II armor, and 5.7x28 can in certain loadings--which is why civilians can't buy those loadings in the US.) Anyway, you're out, I'm a pedantic jerk, etc, etc.

Anyway, its tragic of course, but I doubt it was so simple as one guy who was a moron all his life eventually did something that was inevitable. Instead, its more likely a guy who made a moronic and extremely unsafe decision that he'll have to live with for the rest of his life. For the most part I'm satisfied with my states current gun laws (there are a few exceptions).

Completely off topic, you can see how successful both written and practical tests to obtain a drivers license have been. I personally feel these tests should be much more difficult. Driving unlike gun ownership is a privilege, and not a right. I think making the driving test sufficiently difficult could even help cut down on all the traffic problems.

Sentence 1: I don't know why you're -=not=- all for it. Explain. What's wrong with having a gun license and having it show that you've trained in firearms operation, as deadly as it is? Why not archery, too? Why not make it a written test you have to take before going out for an elk or deer tag?

Sentence 2: They don't register. You're right. Most gun owners (law-abiding, all) probably would not comply, either. Yet, I see no problem with current law. Transfers of virtually any firearm across state lines (from dealer to dealer) is easy as long as these transfers meet state and federal law (and the participants document things properly). Dealer sales require a lot of record-keeping, and checks, depending on state law. There's no trouble getting virtually any gun, though.

Sentence 3) No, they don't. I easily abide by the laws and can get any gun I want. See you at the range.

Firearms are weapons. Cars are weapons. Planes are weapons. Owning and operating any or all of them should be a priviledge granted to those that prove they can accept the responsibilities involved. In this particular case, I side with folks that say that the problem is with people being stupid. I do think there should be some sort of allowance for an armed and stupid populace though, for when we are up against the wall when Kaziranistan invades, as predicted by nutbastard, we can send the stupids in first.
