Doesn't everyone know that Steve Jobs started apple with money raised from "blue boxes" - custom built Telecom hacking devices, designed specifically to get free calls?
And he was an "kool-aid" acid head?
He's anti-establishment through and through, and has always embraced hackers and the hacking community!
If you know anything you'll know he's not cracking down on hackers because hacking culture is the lifeblood of apple and Hackers are THE crucial link in the research/development/testing ecosystem model which allows apple to stay ahead of the game!!
RULE NUMBER 1 is "Keep the hackers HAPPY"
RULE NUMBER 2 is "A happy hacker is a BUSY hacker"!!

boase

First of all, MOST people don't know is that Verizon and Sprint DO OFFER GSM SIM CARDS! Yes the network they use is CDMA, not GSM, however, they do have "World Phones" for international travelers. They take a GSM SIM card as well for operation abroad. You do have to be a subscriber. Just call customer service and tell them you are taking a trip to another country that uses GSM, and that you need a SIM card. I got one from Sprint PCS when I went to Italy. Be sure you have facts when you call in and request it, such as country you are traveling to ( say Europe ) and be sure to say that you have a "World Traveler Phone" that your friend gave you. If you request a SIM card for a phone that is not capable, they may tell you to beat it.

thefatkid007

Whoever was asking about when 2.0 got release, the answer is that the most recent firmware release (this last week) was labeled at 2.0.

As for the iTunes store and the App store, they haven't been in either of the last two stock beta firmwares. I actually think that the iTunes store on the phone is what controls your ability to play songs you purchased through iTunes since I can't play any songs I've purchased on the newest firmware. It plays but nothing comes out the speakers (which is better than the last firmware since it wouldn't even transfer over).

chaines

@Joseph:

You couldn't be more wrong. There will never be a Windows-style epidemic on the iPhone. Symantec, McAfee and Trend Micro exist because the awful architecture of Windows allows anyone's computer to be taken over by anyone else at any time without their consent or even knowledge.

Not so, the iPhone. This "cracking" here doesn't change that. This software is not an example of taking over someone else's iPhone without their consent. These Dev Team guys are only breaking into their own phones.

That will make their personal phones less secure, but for the vast majority of iPhone users--who are perfectly happy with Apple's security measures--this software doesn't change their level of risk at all.

Being able to unlock the gate of your own barbed-wire fence is a lot different than being able to climb over someone else's.

Jesssssse

iphone, it has this, "im an Itouch" identity crisis. im not sure how
it ends up their, when using poof, i realized that the program was
installed but this is back in firmware 1.1.3, it was also hidden.
still contacts isnt anything worth drooling over, its just stupid, i
rather have all my phone functions in one button, not two

I think these guys are great. I'm sick of all this "waah, you're stealing Intellectual Property" garbage; grow up. This guy wasn't stealing revenue, he wasn't selling the stuff, he was asking for donations for his development for drivers he was giving out for free. Creative needs to get their business model up to date and realize that if someone isn't harming you, then let it go. You'll look way better if you promote their work, rather than threaten them... look at all the negative PR they've gotten, even just from here. I'm boycotting until I see a public apology.

jlawson

@Monty: "Given that Apple has now handed the keys to the car (so to speak), at what point does hacking the iPhone become irrelevant?"

If Apple actually handed over the keys, you are right that hacking the iPhone would become irrelevant. But, the keys they'll be giving us in June will only allow those apps blessed by Apple to run, they will be charging developers to host those apps and are still quite restrictive in terms of the iPhone functionality that developers will be allowed to access.

Rogue Amoeba, for example, would like to write and app enabling Airtunes broadcast and reception for the iPhone/Touch, but Apple's development restrictions will apparently prevent this.

@Monty: The point is:

1. This allows you to run your iphone on any compatible network.
2. This allows you to run ANY application, unsigned, not from iTunes. SDK apps are limited by certain Apple guidelines.

This hack will allow you to have COMPLETE freedom. That's why it is EXTREMELY good news that Apple is going to have a very hard time limiting the hackers. So far, so good.

Jesus Diaz

Given that Apple has now handed the keys to the car (so to speak), at what point does hacking the iPhone become irrelevant? I could understand this in the beginning when Apple was not allowing anyone to create their own applications, but now they are. So, does this end when the fruits of the SDK start to be ripe, or will the joys of hacking the iPhone never end?

Regardless, I never met a hack I didn't like. Keep up the good work, Dev Team!

Monty
