Well let me just say I text, and talk. I have T-Mobile, and I have a myfaves plan, and between my myfaves, when it wasn't a busy month for them. I used about 5000 myfaves minutes on them, and about 1,500 text messages or so. And, thats probably not including IM. I love Technology, and my friends. And you will not deplete your vocabulary off of texting. I barely abbreviate when I text, and if I do I know what the abbreviation stands for so its not like my IQ is gonna decrease from 110 to like 20 over my texting spree.

I find the whole texting vs not texting arguement much like calling vs email. As impersonal as a text might seem to some it's a way of communicating much like email. I don't see what the big deal is.

@workingonyourinvoice: Totally agree. I rarely go over 200 msg/month, but I'd love to have an option in between the 200 - 1500 chasm. What are those boneheads at AT&T thinking by such a huge gap in service? You would think they would jump at the chance to take more of my money by providing something in between.

Or, should AT&T just make their plan 300 or 400 msg/month? Are they behind the times with regards to text messaging packages?

9500 / 30 thats 316 messages a day
assuming one would stay up about 16 hours a day, or if its busy 18
thats 18 message in an hour, thats a message every 3 minutes, thats, wow
i write about 30 or so, but i'm paying per message, 20 cent each, calling is certainly cheaper, (and better and nicer and directly responsive)

I am 100% all for asynchronous communications! If I have a question for my wife that I don't need answered right away, I'll text it. When she gets a chance to respond, she does. The same goes the other way. In our busy lives we cannot always answer that phone call. If we're in a meeting or somewhere you can't talk, it's a great alternative and doesn't really take that much more effort.

The most I have sent in a month was last year around March or April and that was 2200 (I have unlimited). My monthly usage now is around 900-1100 texts. I call when I have to but typically just text or email. I think my plan has only 300 anytime minutes, not very much.

I average between 10,000-17,000 texts a month but i still remember the good old days of only 300 texts a month before i started going way over.

The only reason I text so much is to stay awake during school and work because after only getting 4-6 hours of sleep, I need to do something to stay awake.

I average anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000+ depending on the month. A few times over the years I've just crossed the 10,000 mark though... it's a sad but oddly nice feeling.

However, I also talk way too much... in the order of 70-80 hours a month (almost all of that being free minutes). I talk and text at the same time even... it's an addiction, but oh so useful.

I've found it very nice to be able to lightly chat with someone while working, at school, whatever. Great for silent, basic conversations.

I use between 15000 and 20000 texts a month. Might have something to do with the fact that all my friends use texting rather then the actual calling feature on a phone to keep in touch. You can always reach them that way since mostly we're all in class and it's easy to respond to texts under the desk. (College, btw)

I use 7000 text messages on average.

I am in the cell industry though, so it is like second nature to most of us. I like having a conversation without actually having to HAVE a conversation. I am busy, so being able to talk with 4-5 minute breaks in between is always nice.

plus i mass text my staff all in one shot for 10-20 at a time.

I seem to average out to two or three every day. Whenever I have a specific question that I want an answer to, I send a text message. A phone call involves niceties that, quite frankly, I'm not always interested in engaging in. So text messages are definitely useful that way.

But like everyone knows, there's some stuff that simply takes too long to discuss via text message. When those times kick in, it's time to start using minutes. I think I've got 500 per month and, considering that some of the people I text are on VZW's network with me, I haven't come close to going over that amount yet.

If/When I get the Glyde or a smartphone, on the other hand... I might start sending out just for practice. We'll see.

All my peeps txt me and I txt all my peeps. I go thru 500 txts a month on 1 person alone. Trust me, u don't wanna be privvy to all those conversations.

OK. Seriously, for realz...I'm a 40yo IT worker and most of my co-workers and friends text. Some text exclusively. Its quick and to the point. Texting is a way of getting people information that they may require later on. Or it can be a nice reminder to someone that you are thinking about them. A text can make someone's day. That said, unlimited texting plan, FTW.

Some things I wish I could do with txting:
1) Order a cab by texting and the cab company would get my exact geographic location.
2) Ordering a pizza.
3) Shop and compare prices of products via texting and the best price, closest store would be texted back.
4) Get the Metra train depart/arrive schedule for the next train.
5) Get traffic info on my current route.
6) The list could go on, if I think hard enough.

Texting has helped me get more done and enjoy life a little more. If the phone rings and I am driving I don't even bother moving my jacket adjusting the seat belt and unclipping my phone. If I am in a conversation or am busy in the lab, I can catch the message later and not have to call up my voice messaging service (text coverage is a lot more reliable than voice coverage anyway). Plus, the time stamp and the point of the message are available to me immediately. I prefer to take calls for emergencies or stuff that requires real time communication like "I'm driving to your house and the directions are confusing! Was is 1119 Archibald St. or 1191 Archer St.? "

@Skeptical_Geezer: I'm not sure if your comment about kids on the bus was a complaint, but the way I see it, I'd much rather they be texting their little thumbs off than listening to them yap (to each other or on the phone).

I do think it's rude to text while having a conversation with someone, or at dinner (though still not as rude as taking a phone call)

My texting volume has been a function of both the cost and my phone. When I had a boring flip phone with no texting plan, I did almost none. Then I had friends who texted a bunch so I got a plan and my messaging jumped. Then I got an unlimited plan (for free with SERO, woot!) and it was another jump. Then came the Centro and its QWERTY keyboard, and I now could just about do without a voice plan.

i hate texting. i hate being around people doing it. if you think its rude when theyre on a call to someone its much worse when theyre texting. they dont pay any attention to whatever it is youre actually doing together, even conversation. head down, fiddle away, look up and nod occasionally to placate. watching a movie? they arent. eating dinner and talking? not them, minus pauses to shovel food in. at least a phone conversation is animated and up front even if its rude.

I've never understood text messaging, I mean I know how to do but I've never understood why people use it.

In order to send a text, you have to have a cell phone. In order for the person you're sending it to to receive a text, they have to have a cell phone.

Anyway. With the advent of things like e-mail, social messaging, phone's with IM clients etc, I find myself texting quite rarely. When I do, it's often to let someone know I've arrived or to get in touch with a person who doesn't have net access at that point.

When I take the bus, the teens are CONSTANTLY texting, even when sitting with a companion; adults less so. I would probably die if I didn't have texting. It was disappointing when I found out that I couldn't sign on AIM or use MMS on a BlackBerry without a data plan, yet I still send/receive around... 5,000-8,000 a month. (AIM forwarding included). My record on a RAZR V3xx was 10,300 a month, when I had AIM on it. I don't see how someone can only send less than 500 a month...

i try not to talk on the phone. texting makes me organize my thoughts and communicate what i want to say in the most concise manner possible, which often clarifies the message. plus, that way the person can get them whenever. if its an immediate need, i call, but for the most part i just text. a lot a month, i dont wanna even think about it. thousands, for sure.

With the amount that people text currently rising and rising...im suprised 2 way pagers havent come back on the scene.The could make them like palm pilots with just texting plans instead of voice plans.Very understandable that this would not work for everyone...but i assume there must be some sort of money in that market.

I don't do that many cellphone calls or send text messages... but I think there's a balance between both.

I text more because that way I can send simple messages over half a dozen friends... but when I have to detail the info, just make or receive a call. I usually receive more calls than I make... so it's all good on my pocket.

Yeah. I average around 2000+ a month mimumum in just Verison customers(5 or 6 of my friends). and about another 1000 to my other friends(Att & Sprint). So if Im not texting it is cuz my phone is dead....or im asleep...

I only ever use txtDrop.com to message friends from my PC or iPod Touch because I don't have a texting plan on my cell and it takes dag-gom forever to type anything with those silly phone pads. If anyone wants to text me back, I've set up an email address at my domain that forwards to my cell phone's text email address gateway. Nerdilicious.

im down to a pathetic 40 or 50 a month. As a matter of fact just removed my plan because I wont be texting anymore. Back before moving to the US averaged 6 to 8 hundred. the majority with no more of 15 characters each. wasteful, if you can say that about an sms.

I have been simplifying my life since, trying to depend the least on things that cost. more money for big shiny things.

Never, when I started my phone plan in 2002, I had an allotment of 300/month, I had to ask people to send me texts just to use it. I found myself using less than 20 per month (sending and receiving), so I dropped the plan to a talk-only once the contract ended. In the past five years, I've sent and received 20 texts at most (not counting free texts).

i actually dont even make calls anymore since to me calling someone for 30 seconds isnt even worth it. i avg about 700-800 monthly, highest hitting about 1300. i have a friend that only text and she avgs anywhere from 7000-10000 monthly. to me thats just ridiculous, but to each his own.

I text a lot, but only because I'm in grad school. There's no weekends and free time is rare, classes only take up about 20% of our busy time. Therefore, you never know when a teammate or a friend is in a meeting. Texting lets them get your message right away, and if they're busy the message is there for later.

The beauty of txt messages is how discreet they are first of all. You can literally check them while on a date from underneath the table (w/ good eyesight). Also, since there is a limit on the amount of characters in each message it encourages people to make their messages concise. People whom I can't seem to get to quit rambling on will get txts from me as apposed to calls for obvious reasons.

I think the most txts used in one month was slightly less than 600 for myself

Depends, my phone is broken (stupid K750i joystick), so txting for me is somewhat of a labor. Despite this I txt on average 1500/mo.

Back when I socialized (high school) I peaked at around 5000/mo, but then i started to develop thumb problems...you win some, you lose some.

I rarely text, unless I know the recipient responds more quickly to them. I prefer using the unlimited data plan on my HTC 8525 and sending/receiving email through Outlook Mobile via my Exchange Server at home. Then I don't have to sync via wire with my messages at home.

I can also use a freeware IM client if I need to.

@workingonyourinvoice: i dunno, but with my BB plan thats the choices i get...lame. plus i've got the Pearl which im regretting, should've got the Curve like my roommate. the keys on the Pearl are becoming unrepsonsive or double up the letter. but with the iPhone 3G news(which we all knew was coming) im holding out for it. hope it works overseas wherever i get deployed to in January tho.

I really don't get why you would pay for 160 characters of text when you can blast off a multimegabyte email without having to cramp your fingers on whatever small keys are on your phone.

Most of my texting is for little stuff that doesn't warrant a full phone call or for places where being on the phone just doesn't work. If I'm in a bar watching a game and want to see what friends think I'll text them just because I hate being "the guy with his finger in one ear and the phone pressed hard into the other" shouting stuff 5 times.

I used to text a lot on my palm, and when I lived in China, where everyone texts all the time. Since switching to an AT&T tilt, my texting has been cut dramatically due to the slow and clunky nature of the interface. I miss the speed and threaded messaging on the Palm, despite all its faults.

I think how well your particular device lends itself to texting matters a lot in how much you use the feature.

The other half and I rarely call each other - we text instead. The way I look at it, a ringing cell is screaming "Pay attention to ME, not that humanoid beside you!!!" Very intrusive unless it's an emergency.

We look at texting as being able to leave a post-it on their desk. If they see it immediately, great. If not, no biggie.

"Will b late - unowho needs sthng done YESTERDAY" for example.

I probably average about 1 text message a day. I can't really let it get out of hand because ATT only gives you 200/month, and they can go by really quick when you're going back and forth.

With my old motorola razr, I didn't text at all because it had a built-in AIM client. Of course, now that I, and everyone I know is using an iPhone, we get to use crappy SMS, even though we all have unlimited data. A good, native ichat client can't come soon enough.
