Your absolutely correct,

And i didn't mean to be holier than thou or anything by saying there is a high volume of medical students here or anything, its just one of the many factors that helps the progression of that kind of disease.

Its just that when I think about the pros and cons, other ways of combating seasonal depression are much more viable than tanning beds, because they are a lot of risky and don't require as much time.

Also keep in mind that even though UV therapy is used to depression via vitamin D deficiency.. the vast majority of SAD type depression is treated with the AMOUNT of light in the room, not that content of UV that leads to the production of Vitamin D..

In actuality, if you were deficient in Vitamin D, not only would you be showing signs of depression, but there would be other signs as well, pointing to diseases like rickets (in children) and osteoporosis or osteomalacia.

No in this case, the depression stems from the fact that there is either a lack of serotonin because of the lack of sun, or there is a overproduction of melatonin (produced in dim light) which causes problems in sleep cycles and circadian rhythms.

All in all, yes U.V lights useful.. but not nearly as effective.

Mith

i'm not going to comment on how tanning beds are adjustable. I'm not going to comment on personal uv lights. I'm not going to mention how the body functions better with a proper level of UV, (aka the production of vitamin d). And i'm not going to comment on how there were things to combat not getting enough sun before these babies were invented. And I'm certainly not going to comment on other things that I won't bother mentioning here. btw Engineering students are equally deficient in time.

jkr

@red:

Exactly, along with that time is a big factor as well. Most of the people that live in my town are medical university students, were barely have time to take a friggen dump..

and tanning beds are not exactly the most healthy thing on the planet you know.. in excess they can do much more harm than good. the overdosing on UV rays can cause mutation of your DNA, which can lead to a form of skin cancer.

And whats more.. the benefits of tanning beds on SAD is theoretical at best, there is no conclusive evidence that it helps in the treatment of this disorder.

These lamps on the other hand (if they work the same way light boxes do) will no produce harmful UV rays

hence.. they wont take your money and give you cancner

Mith

-and those little cracker things. What are those?
They aren't really a cookie and they aren't really a cracker...it's like they belong on the Island of Misfit Snacks for something.

Anyway I think they have KFC over there now too or something.

strider_mt2k

so i guess there's no such thing as tannings beds in europe? People also pack on the pounds in winter time for a couple of reasons. It's cold, and fat is warm. In the states we have thanksgiving near Christmas and Halloween. Don't know what brits have.

jkr

I have this problem, I would love to have a lamp like this.

The problem is called SAD (Seasonal Anxiety Disorder). The very fitting name comes from the fact that lack of sun causes a deficiency of melatonin levels in the body, which will cause mood swings, depression, anxiety of course, and in my own circumstances eating problems and weight gain ( I always gain about 10-15 pounds in the winter time and then loose it during the summer).

This would be a great product for those of us who live in countries where there are frequent days of rain, grey skies, and lack of sun, such as England or Poland (which is where I live haha)

SAD is a very common problem, I hear that light therapy is a fairly effective way to treat it until spring arrives and you have your natural sun.. you can also try taking over the counter melatonin supplaments

Mith

shown to be effective against cold sores.
