Not sure why a few people are bad-mouthing projectors. Your ideas of projectors were probably from the early days of low-res, low contrast, weak bulb, 4:3 projectors watching something on a white wall over a composite video cable from a VCR. A lot has changed, every one of those variables: now it's high resolution (2mil pixels), high contrast, powerful bulb, 16x9 ratio, superb uniform screens, pure digital RGB signals (HDMI/DVI), from high-res sources. Have you experienced digital cinema at your local movie theater? Yep, it's a projector, and it's a DLP, and that experience is now superior to film projection. What he has is a 1080p LCD projector from Panasonic, a leader in video processing and production, I have one of their commercial plasma monitors, which looks better than anything with a glossy finish down at the Big Box stores. True he's missing a Blu-Ray, but 1080i from cable with the lights off will still look amazing, and cheaper than a flat panel of the same size of course.

At first, I was appalled by the lack of surrounds, but as someone else mentioned, it looks like he may have a pair of in-ceiling speakers still in the box for that purpose. The rest of his set-up, while not high-end in absolute terms, is respectable. The Panasonic projector especially is a nice PJ for the money. It's hard to tell what size screen he's using, but if it's anything beyond a 60-inch, it would explain why he went that route instead of LCD or plasma. Beyond a certain point, the installation issues associated with really big and heavy flat-panel displays make it a tremendous PITA to do yourself. Just getting a big flat-panel display INTO some apartments takes some major preparation.

What bothers me the most about his set-up though is his choice of source material. He goes to the trouble of buying his "awesome" 1080p/24 capable Panasonic front projector and Denon receiver with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-Master Audio capability, and the best he's ever going to get out of it is broadcast-quality 1080i (if he's really lucky) and entry-level Dolby Digital surround. Would it have killed him to pop for a $399 PS3? The format war is over, what's the problem? Neither of the source devices he's using will come close to delivering the full potential of even a mediocre projector, let alone a capable 1080p model like the Panasonic. My wife's not an audio or videophile, but even she can consistently tell the difference in picture and sound quality between Blu-ray or HD-DVD discs and a direct OTA broadcast on our front projection system.

I only just recently upgraded my home theater, and in the process I learned a few things. Everyone has a different idea of what they need to have in their home theater setup; everyone has different brand loyalties; and lots of speakers sound awesome so pick the ones you like as opposed to the ones that cost the most.

That being said, I don't see anything glaringly wrong with Kevin's choices in equipment. All those components are of at least decent quality. He probably doesn't have to worry a whole helluva lot about money so he doesn't really have to find the best deals. I'm sure he's very happy with his setup, which is all that really matters. I'm sure those wouldn't have been my choices, but it's not my setup.

God damn apple tv is expensive...

I hate it when people put AV components behind you. Who wants to be aiming the remote backwards and over your head if one of the components isn't too good about reading an IR signal bounced off the wall in front of you? I have all of my stuff (HTPC, Receiver, Xbox, etc.) inside a short stand underneath my TV, then above that is my projection screen. You've only got to run one cable back to the projector, granted it will be long and expensive but the guy has some $2500 towers so I doubt he would blink at buying a 50' Monster HDMI cable.

I hope he's got some blackout curtains for the windows cause those blinds aren't going to cut it if there's a decent security light or street light outside at night.

And I know everyone here has mentioned how low the projector is mounted, but the funny part (aside from that it's sitting on a shelf) is that it isn't even on top of the shelf!

What is with the hate on Klipsch speakers here?
Sure, the guy didn't make the most intelligent A/V decisions, but the hardware he chose is high quality. After auditioning a lot of the golden-eared audiophile brands mentioned above, in controlled environments, next to the ones Kevin bought, next to the RF-82s, 83s, and 63s, I have to say all the RF series sound fantastic. The only thing that exceeded the RF-63's by a unanimous decision of my "panel" (friends, family, other audio folks) were the abhorrently expensive Martin Logan electrostatic speakers. If I were Kevin I would have gone with the RF63's or 82's over those plastic XF-48's. Either way, I just wasted 5 minutes of my life reading this and writing this post. Thanks, Giz. :)

I have to say that the PT-AE2000 is a great looking projector, although I paid less for mine and have a larger screen. With the amount of light in that space I would have gone with a 50" or 60" Plasma for about the same money; he would have been much happier. And for what he payed for the Klipsch he could have gotten much better sounding Maggies and REL sub. He really should have consulted someone who knows what they are doing when putting together a system. Of course everyone has an opinion on what sounds better and has brands they favor, but ultimately its whether the end user is happy.

I disagree with the flat-panel speakers, though. I'd go for the the RF-83s. Same price, huge ... loud, low. Then the paired subwoofer. Three 12"s, 19hz! Really expensive, though. Not for you fools, apparently. We're all filthy stinking rich on the Giz.

And if anyone starts bitching about the horn-type tweeter, I'm gonna tweeter you in the face with a baseball bat. Hear the sound of your demise in high definition! Don't miss a beat!

Forget Denon, forget Onkyo, or any receiver you can get at Best Buy. Surround sound processor: Theta Casablanca III. Theta Citadel monoblocks to power the fronts, and a six-channel Theta Dreadnaught II bi-amping the center and surrounds. That's a fucking setup.

50" philips ambilight tv: $2000

wal-mart brand sub & surround: $30 (very worth it. It has volume controls for each of the channels on the remote and is loud enough where my upstairs neighbours complain.)

crappy comcast/motorolla cable box from 2005 without
HDMI interface: free

regular dvd recorder: $99

So total of: $2129.

@nfitch: Surround sound is great for listening to audio, if the artist engineers the album for that capacity. Watching video's on surround is incredible if you shell the dough out for a nice setup.

Someone spending $9000 on a home theater wouldn't consider getting surrounds? doubt it... Surround sound is overrated, and definitely not preferable to stereo when listening to music.

Klipsch is an interesting choice, but I don't doubt that he is happy with his setup. Good for him.

Floor standing speakers are not that bad even without the surround. Of course, I assume that he has some flushmount ceiling speakers already set up.

Also, with the amount of light in that room a projector was a bad decision, not to mention it is such a small screen. Why not just get a LCD that size, and not have to worry about wash out or a projector. Plus the projector is mounted too low. Trying to watch anything but a movie there will get annoying as anytime someone walks by its going to block the screen. Good luck having a super bowl party.

I would have thought a person as tech savy as Kevin Rose would have done a bit more research or thought before jumping the gun on a poorly thought out system. Guess I was wrong.

Just like to jump to the guys defence here, yes apparently his company was valued once at 60 million, and more recently rumours spread that certain news conglomorates were to offer 200 million for it, amazing right? Thing is Kevin hasn't been given any of that money yet! While i'm sure the salary he's now drawing won't be too shabby, he's no Scobble. Remember Digg is only a young company still and he's re-invested in Pownce anway.

So, even if he is now a quitely loaded business man, I say fair dues for him not letting it go to his head and buying a friggin Tesla's worth of A/V equipment.

I guess I'm not all geeky with Star Wars ships buzzing around my mom's basement, but The Daily Show plays just fine without it. I'll keep buying my clothes at the goodwill, enjoying my 3.1 sound, and retire at 40 thanks.

He didn't stint on the speakers. He's got a pair of Klipsch XF-48 floor-standing speakers ($1249 each) along with a Klipsch subwoofer and center channel. His rear speakers were not shown, but with his good friend "Jeff from Dolby" there to help him set things up, I'm sure he's got things covered. Or is that center speaker doubling for the surround sound duties?
