the screen on my laptop crapped out and it has become a desktop. I could probably use a new laptop to take to class next year... Should I pick up one of these when it comes out? or is there a possibility that they will be using newer chips a few months after release?

These ultra cheap tiny laptops are so cool, and are a huge advantage for lighter, lower-resource requirement operating systems.

I'd love to buy a couple of these for my in-laws, but the screen is too small for their older eyesight.

A year ago i purchased a desktop replacement laptop. God how i wish i simply had a desktop and one of these babys for the same price. Trying to mix school and leasure was a dumb idea.

@mricyfire: Well you must be one of the stupidest people on this earth to ask such a question. You cannot see how this could be a real back saver to a frail woman or small child or guy who is lacking working testicles that produce testosterone. Did you not notice all the excitement with the MacBook Air? Instead of criticizing you should realize that there are many people in this world who are not as fortunate as you and it is a good thing that companies are willing to produce items to help them. I once even seen some guy make a post on a forum in which he was complaining about some product that instead of using a SD card it used huge CompactFlash cards and the only thing I could think was he that he must really be a dainty fellow. Instead of being such a callous rube you should have some empathy for those who if they had to carry around five or seven pounds for more than a couple of hours would break down in tears.

The only issue that I have with the EEEPC is the fact that there is no option for a HDD.

That's my main factor in why I'll probably end up going with the Wind PC from MSI. That and a 10 inch screen with a slightly higher resolution: and the Atom processor, bigger keyboard, aluminum body, and more processing power.

Oh and thanks to Giz for getting my account fixed so I can finally post.

Hmph. I game just fine on my EEEPC. Neverwinter Nights, Quake 3, Unreal Tournament (Not the newer wannabe 2003, 2004, or 3...the original and still the best), World of Warcraft, Age of Empires 2, Impossible Creatures (One of my daughter's all time favorites), and more. Sure. Crysis is not going to run on it, but I'd love to see a laptop run Crysis decently anyway. I love my EEEPC. So there.

@mricyfire: Please refrain from posting again. Regarding ultralights, you obviously have no imagination, insight, or leg to stand on beyond gaming (which is practically useless on any laptop of portable size = 95%) or cropping pictures and feeling important for doing so.

For a living, I help the executive & professional levels of "everyone who uses a PC for more than...", and trust me, after they see me whip out one of my ultralight toys THEY BUY ONE FOR THEMSELVES AND NEVER LOOK BACK!

My 8yr old international tech/security biz is nothing short of needing computing power, continual tech advancement, & PORTABLITY... After my <2lb, 1/2in thick Sharp MM20 burned up last month (4+ years old and could still kick the crap out of many new full size laptops - yes it was tweaked, but 'old' & the reigning smallest notebook), I will no doubt be able to find THOUSANDS of uses for an Eee PC!

Security assessments, network diagnostics, wireless deployment & testing (5 miles+ WITH the Eee PC), wireless cracking, all around white-hat hacking, graphic & web design, programming, databasing, VPN access, QuickBooks, VoIP, DVD backup, Video monitoring, and on and on and on.

ALL while barely using the strength of two fingers to lift, and a minuscule fraction of space in my briefcase!

Beyond the point: Do you want to make friends, conversations, and connections real quick? Have something EXTREMELY useful and portable at a solid pricepoint. THAT, mricyfire, is what most people want.

since when was the new thing in the pc world, smaller pcs with less power? 12gb ssd, 1gb ram, celeron processor...wtf can I do on that machine? word, excel, sure cant play games cant store tons of music/movies no photoshop, no music making apps... so its like a few pounds lighter than a regular laptop, but what human cant deal with 5-7 pounds of laptop (that can perform)
