shooting docs w/o a zoom lens? you prefer swapping out primes on the fly? 50x ain't much of a zoom either. i've shot thousands of hours of footage for docs/reality etc and we'd be cooked w/o a 12-120 zoom lens. shaky? not if you know what you're doing.

This camera is going to be huge for indie filming. Actually was so impressed I ran a story on it over at borderlinetheory . com

It has a 4.3 inch LCD, but I think a viewfinder on this model would be tricky to use considering the size. The wifi controls could be awesome for use with crane shots and a iPod touch or iPhone controlling it.

@zjgz: LOL dude it's from RED, the only thing they sell under $300 are mounting brackets and handles. Nothing with any actual digital technology in it.

For industrial stuf, like shooting large conferences from across a ball room you need at least 20x to get a tit shot (MCU) and more is better. Sure, using little HD heads for large conferences might be under spec'd, but sometimes it is nice to be able to set up with out bring the heavy hear for mid-sized shows.

unless you're shooting a Space Shuttle launch, no one cares a crap about 50x zoom. In fact, what really matters (at least in Documentary/ENG) is how wide is this lens without a wide lens adaptor/lens flare exagerator/edge distorter - which is the only (but big) problem with built-in lenses.

No, what most people say is "my FOV is too fscking narrow, i can only get one person in the shot here. OR This stupid wide angle adaptor is fringing the edges of the shot and now i have all kinds of extra lens flares (or worse, reflections of the of the lens showing up). I once had a great shot totally destroyed because all i could see was "10x Zoom 6.1", backward, in the middle of the shot.

i think i just made in my pants.

i'm also wondering if that whole plan for going with XDCAM EX1s for our production company (shooting documentaries for missionaries and ministries out in the field) is such a great idea after all... Scarlet looks REEly small, and that is a huge bonus for what we want to do.

Also, since its 3k, i can use SmoothCam in Final Cut even when working on 1920x1080p24 footage since i have extra space to let it do it smooooveing magic.

Does this camera come with basically everything you need to get started (like standard consumer cameras do), or is there a need to buy additional accessories like with the Red One?

(I'm just curious...I realize that most pro cameras, like the Red One, are sold with the expectation of needing to buy many accessories too).

This should give companies like Canon's pro line of cameras a run for their money. Although, Canon's 1080p $3,000 camera comes with a 50x lens.
