@jakewill:

That's some good information and thanks for the story. However, I worked at a university helpdesk for several years where we supported OEM (and a few custom ) computers for over 1000 residential students and several thousand more commuters. We see far more than our fair share of bad parts, but a damaged CPU is at the bottom of our list. Over four or five years, we only saw 3 bad CPUs. One of them was because the student purchased it without knowing anything about computers and damaged the pins. The other 2 were an AMD and an Intel.

Anyway, I don't know what kinda stuff people had been doing, but a 70% failure rate on CPUs, regardless of the company, is very, very awkward. Motherboards are far more likely to die. CPU makers do have a good amount of say on motherboards, but from a quality/reliability perspective, there's little they can do.

geowrian

The clear choice for performance right now is Intel, with AMD lagging behind in development. It used to be AMD, with their hypertransport and each socket having its own bank of memory. The hypertransport used beat the pants off of the full-buffered Intel model. Where are the new generation of quad-core AMDs?

fizgiged

The older PPC Macs used either Motorola or IBM made processors. Prior to PPC, it was only Motorola. No doubt this is the "other" that was checked.

I was all for AMD until recently when it came time to build an all new PC. The intel chips cost the same now, and make a fraction of the heat that the AMDs make. Considering that my old AMD is literally used as the heater in my office, I wanted to avoid that again.

Chiper

My issue with Intel has always been with every Intel machine I have to constantly tweak it to keep my machine stable. I work at a computer store where we build custom computers and we only use AMD procs, a friend of mine works for a competing computer store and they use only Intel he built himself a new quad core intel machine and I have an older x2 athlon and he has had more problems with his system then I've ever had with mine. In the first 8 months he's owned his machine he's had to wipe and reload it 3 times and all he does is play WOW. In the 2 years I've owned my machine I've only had to wipe it out once and that was to upgrade from Vista RC2 to final code. While I do agree that currently Intel had the performance crown in power it was that way before the Athlon came out and all AMD had was the K6, I think once Phenom can get out and breath and they get a die shrink in there the numbers will come to parity again.

mantuswsh

If you're going to religiously buy one over the other for no good reason, you're an idiot and need to grow up. Buy from which ever manufacturer offers the best performance for your money in the given segment at a given time. At the moment, that manufacturer is Intel in almost every segment, but 4 years ago it was the complete opposite. I would love to see AMD bounce back, otherwise the market will stagnate and the consumer will suffer. This industry needs competition to progress, at the moment, there isn't really any.

In the past I thought I could future proof my PC purchase by using parts that are near top of line. I've tossed that idea out the window for some time now.

Just after I bought a hot 3ghz Intel beast, they came out with dual core (arghhhhh). I'm sure many of those who bought Core Duo, wish they would have held out for Core 2 Duo.

Heck I can't even use the mobo's I have lying around the house to build anything decent.

In my heart I root for AMD (and ATI) and I would try to wait until they come out with options that best Intel's (or Nvidia's) offerings. However, I couldn't, with a clear conscience, recommend AMD based systems to any of my friends right now.

I wonder if anyone will read such a long comment, so far down the thread.

misterwho

I used AMD exclusively for years because they were, for those years, much better processors for the price. Right now Intel makes drastically better processors for the price. I will buy whichever one is making the best stuff at the time I'm buying. That seems like a better answer.

TurboFool

I think AMD's are fine for gamers who build a new system every year or two. But I think they have no place in a business who buys a machine and expects to to last 4 or 5 years.

I Worked for a local "do it all" computer company.

We built (assembled) our own systems. The people building the machines were very knowledgable and professional. Static contol procedures were always followed.

All the machines we sold had a 4 year on site warranty. And probably 80% of them were rocking an AMD processor.

As time went on, we had so many warranty claims on 2-3 year old AMD machines that tending to the warrantys began to consume more and more of our time. It got to the point where you could go 2 or 3 days without preforming any billable work because your days were filled with warranty work swapping dead processors and motherboards.

Ultimately the company folded. The financial cost of replacing parts combined with the loss of billable hours drove the company too far into the red to recover.

Maybe it's unfair, but since then it's always been Intel for me.

Bender

Performance is what matters to me. A couple of years ago, when AMD was wiping the floor with Intel, I would have preferred AMD. For the time being Intel is back on top of the heap so I'd prefer their chips. I spend most of my time on a Mac so I really don't have much of a choice anyhow.

Speaking of Macs, PPC sucks. Having owned PC's with Athlons in them at the same time I owned Macs with PPC's, I can tell you that there was no comparison. A lot of crazed fanboys bought into Steve's propaganda about the superiority of PPC but I knew better. Sure was funny how he did a complete 180 about which was better once the deal was made with Intel.

Thrillcekr

while its true the AMD makes nice processors and they have some better options then intel, they processors are crap. any office that i have walked in to with AMD processors has had the processors fail. its ok if you have them running on and off with not to much uptime, but when they are running constantly I much rather have intel. Intels chips haven't always been great but they last a hell of a lot longer then AMD's (or at least in my encounters). port of me thinks that AMD is just around so that intel doesn't become a monopoly. not many other companies make Processors for Computers and Laptops (not including UMPC, Ect.) Meh I still have Powerbook's siting around that run all day bless their parts.
megaforte

Generally I'm an AMD guy. Intel just charges extra for the name, and that pisses me off the same way anything made by Sony is overpriced and pisses me off. I would agree with the "preferred AMD until recently" though. But, I'm not in dire need to build a new system now, so I can wait a year for AMD to take their turn in the lead. The two companies will continue to play leapfrog for the foreseeable future.

Zlevee

As a computer consultant (monkey with a #2 screwdriver), I both build business/home systems and repair 3rd party OEM systems...

My business used to use all AMD's with Shuttle motherboards... Then we realized that after about 4 years (1-3 years after the warranty expired) the processors were coming back with about a 70% failure rate. By then, they were cheap as dirt, but nonetheless, we had to cover our warranty we put on the systems (5 years) and pay for the labor and processor replacement.

That was back in the late 90's to early 2000's.

Since the realization that AMD processors and second-rate motherboards were garbage, we have started ONLY using Intel motherboards and processors. They have generally been as fast as our customers need, and being used as basic workstations, quality was the first priority.

Out of approximately 400+ Intel processors and motherboards, we have only had to do RMAs on 1 Processor(fan died in a dirty system and burned up the processor) and 4 motherboards (2 of which were blown by lightning through an unprotected dial-up modem, the others had failed built-in Realtek network adapters).

I know 400 systems is not a lot over 6 years, but we SWEAR by Intel. Almost ALL RMA work we do is on 3rd party OEM systems (i.e. Dell, HP, Compaq, etc.) and we have NEVER had a failed Intel processor from ANY of these manufacturers, no matter how cheap the system. We only get about 5 AMD systems a year, and half of the time it is the cheap 3rd party motherboard (i.e. MSI, Foxconn, etc.) or the Processor (always a headache as it is the last thing we replace.)

Well, I hope that you can relate to my experiences, good luck finding a processor! (Q9550 FTW!)

yes, I am an Intel fanboy

jakewill

First and seconds PC, were Cyrix. Third one, Pentium II, because I always wanted an 'Intel Inside' computer. I would be using that rig if it weren't a victim of the badcaps plague in early 21st century. Bought an Athlon XP as a replacement, and still using it (And will use until it stops working or my Linux distro of choice switches completeley to x86_64)!!! Recently I upgraded my brother's Pentium III Tualatin to an Athlon X2 on xmas, a very sweet machine that I keep using every time I have a chance (ie. brother not playing or watching youtube).

There is a fact that most fanboys oversee, at the moment Intel might be the king in the CPU kingdom, but no matter how fast they are over AMD's, there is no way that somebody could have the fastest processor in any single moment. Core 2 Duos today are the rage, but if AMD releases some magic processor that beats Core 2 Duo, a lot of people then will bash Intel.

In this moment whatever current processor you use is fine. Because, it isn't the fastest or most efficient processor. It is just a tool that let you do your work or entertain you. And any model from AMD or Intel will do fine.

Under that principle, I'm sticking with AMD, they are fast enough, very efficient, very cheap, and have a lot of features for years that Intel is now without any shame duplicating in their Nehalem architecture.

I'm even looking seriously at VIA Isaiah's and Intel Atom recent stories and thinking of them as desktop machines, I prefer a very efficient processor to a multi-core hundreds-of-watts mini kitchen.

After all, how much do you need to read Gizmodo? I had for a few months a VIA C3 800Mhz Mini-ITX... And it was enough to surf the web, programming, writing and distribute files over the home network.

I think that processor branding is irrelevant now.

rquesada

I consider my system to be pretty high-end, and I still don't come across anything that bottlenecks on my processor. I've compared it with friends' Core 2 Duo systems with processors that are in the same price range and mine is faster.

I'm not worried about power consumption or overclocking- my AMD is in a desktop and overclocking is pointless these days. Your processor is already not the bottleneck 99.9% of the time- who needs an extra .2 ghz? It was great back when it brought about vast performance increases but that isn't what we need right now.

Understandable, but from a power perspective, being able to control cores individually based on demand & assumed usage results in battery battery life. For laptops, it makes a big difference if AMD can get it right...right now they're not quite up to it, and the errata in them is not helping.
When I was just learning how to build computers I used AMD athlons (eww) then when I switched for a P4 then the Speed was significantly faster had lesser choke ups. I guess AMD is better for the Price, but if you have money buy Intel.

There are other companies that make processors too, I can only name VIA, IBM, and Motorola off the top of my head, but I haven't actually used them recently so no comment.

Megan Fox Iz Hot! ^-^ - ph15h

Secondly, because of the competition, Intel is forced to bring down the price.

When we get a better product with less price why go for a costly one.

I've liked Intel processors and Intel chipsets too for the most part.
That's what has worked for me historically.

Of course everything is different now, so if I had to replace my current desktop I'd have to really read up quite a bit before making a move.
I do like nvidea for my video if given a preference.

Of course I'm always open to hearing about different stuff and I respect everyone's right to be into anything they like.

strider_mt2k

At the moment, for me its Intel. Intel CPU's can OC way higher than AMD CPU's (and no, OCing does not damage hardware if voltage and temps are monitored, which is easy to do)

Phenoms, even though they are a true quad core, they are terrible at OCing and the new stepping can only go to 3-3.2ghz.

While the old Intel Q6600 can OC to 3.6-4ghz (G0 stepping).

AMD needs to get there act together. Intel already has 45nm CPU's out and Nehalem is coming out in the end of this year.

So far, AMD's only hope is ATI which is keeping them alive still. NVIDIA has been slipping, the 9 series is terrible in performance as most of the 9 series cards perform the same as the newer 8 series cards. Being brilliant, they reused the G92 core, which is in the 512mb GT and GTS.

ATI can take advantage of this hopefully with the upcoming 4 series. But who knows, NVIDIA is touting there GT200.

The 9 series might just be a filler for NVIDIA between the 8 series and the upcoming cards with the GT200.

Gigo

There have been times when AMD has held the performance advantage, and they have usually held the price advantage, but I've typically bought Intel (probably in a ratio of 6:1 vs AMD). Quite possibly in reaction to the religious fanatics who always bought AMD as a way of "sticking it to the man", in much the same way that some people go for linux or OS/X (and previously OS/2) over Microsoft....

Mandatory_Field
