I agree to a certain extent, but, like I said, it is a non-issue for the vast majority of people who use iTunes. I have downloaded a few iTunes albums in my day, and have not had any issues personally, but I could see how an issue could arise if I wanted to stream music on a PS3 or make illegal copies for my friends.

justinpe

I don't only shop at a single chain of department store, likewise I purchase digital music from iTunes, Amazon, eMusic.

Sometimes it's cheaper on Amazon or eMusic, sometimes only available on iTunes. The bottom line is most of the songs I buy are .99 each, so what the hell do I care where it comes from.

And I like to store my music in mp3 format for portability. So for the protected songs I do purchase thru iTunes I use DRM Dumpster to effortlessly perform the conversion.

marzer

I tried iTunes once and I didn't like it but admittedly this was before they had DRM-free. I don't have ipod and that may be one reason, I don't follow the masses blindly like many do.
Of course many people didn't have many choices before so the switch the Amazon, etc will be slow.
As its been mentioned ppl do not like to switch services they know and understand.
I have used Amazon and while I like the quality of the tracks, I don't much care for how things are organized. I find it more difficult to locate new material because often new releases actually have "old" releases just "new" to the mp3 downloads section. Really bizarre, should be separate.
Also the downloader works well but I prefer to specify which folder and separate those by artist which Amazon doesn't allow, only one directory. So for that reason I bypass it but it downloads very quickly.
I'm more of a buy the whole album person but if I want single tracks I'll certainly use Amazon but otherwise I'll buy the CD rather than download a full one.

GhoS

And - for the music execs out there - I have bought more music since Amazon added MP3 download than I have in the last 3 years combined.

as for iTunes, tried it once, hated it, deleted it. And now I have the pleasure of persistant and instistant notifications of patches and updates - that won't go away. Oh and when I want to update the QuickTime, it keeps giving me iTunes again and again - even when I tell it not too. Sounds like the Microsoft model of software distribution to me.

I can't imagine not using an iPod. I've already tried most of the other media players before going with the iPod, and they just don't cut it. With as many iPods as there are in the wild, I don't think there will EVER be a shortage of them. I'm just not concerned that I'll lose the ability to play my tracks because I can always get my hands on an iPod.

MP3 is also about 15 years old, lossy, chunky, and not as sophisticated as MP4/AAC.

If I DO ever go with a non-iPod player, I can simply convert all my protected AAC files to unprotected ones from the CDs I burn when I buy the tracks in the first place. My whole music collection is on CDs, in a box in my storage room. If the protected AACs ever don't work for me, I have backups of all those tracks, anyway.

Finally, why should I navigate away from iTunes to an online store, go through their purchase process, download, and then transfer when iTunes will do it all in one step?

That being said, I do use alternative means to get music I cannot find on iTunes. I'm not picky. Amazon, eMusic, CDBaby, etc... They're all OK.

ZeroCorpse

I would argue that iTunes would be better for someone like this. If she didn't even know that the tracks had DRM or what DRM is, then why is Amazon so much better? So she can get rid of something that she had no knowledge of and didn't even affect her to begin with? Using Amazon is confusing to people that don't understand computers.
justinpe

Just making an analogy, or rather expanding on yours. This article isn't about house-broken pets either.

I would like to point out, however, that the OS you run is relevant to this article because, from my experience, iTunes runs much better on OS X than Windows, and a majority of iTunes users run Windows.
justinpe

I am going to agree with all those who said because the Amazon/eMusic downloader "sucks" and add that their interfaces (search included) also suck as well. Aesthetically, they're both a mess and you think that Amazon would have at least spent a little money (instead of none at all as they sandwich it into their existing store).

I find using both painful and annoying. Apple has built the better mousetrap and I like the ecosystem.

That said? I never buy more than 2 songs off of an album from iTunes. If I need more than that, I buy the CD.

ComicDork

Kinda like switching from Windows to OS X? Everyone is trained on Windows and are subsequently satisfied with mediocrity. Even if you open the door for them, and shove OS X in their faces, they will continue to confine themselves with the shackles of Microsoft. Only the free-spirited and open-minded are able to venture out into the wild and experience life outside of the start button.
justinpe

It's definitely about comfort and convenience. This is exactly what makes something like the iPhone so attractive to "the rest of the world" who isn't as tech-savvy as Giz readers. I just got my mother an iPod and she had to write down the steps she needed to follow to buy an MP3 from iTunes and sync it to her pod (which to me is RIDICULOUSLY easy, but to her it's not). Imagine having to by from amazon, import that file into her library, etc. way too much for her to mentally comprehend (even if it is only a step or two different).

Not to mention, the iPod itself is the biggest reason. I know all about DRM and why it sucks, but I still choose the iTMS simply because the DRM doesn't really restrict my listening. Works fine on my computer and my iPod so what do I care? It's the IDEA of DRM I don't like... not the implementation, and for people like my mother who have an iPod they would have no idea why non-DRM is "better" for them.

RoCKSTaH53

You don't see Amazon gift cards hanging in every check-out aisle of grocery stores, targets or wal-marts.

No mp3 player can download music straight from Amazon and then sync back to your computer.

Amazon's service is not as seamless or user friendly.

Not too many people are aware that Amazon offers a similar service. Every one who has bought an iPod knows about iTunes.

The people who really care about cheap DRM-free tracks will use P2P.

iTunes offers much more than just music. They have movies, music videos, podcasts etc. and a lot of free content. People like being able to accomplish multiple tasks with one app.

Most people set up an iTunes account when they get an iPod, and don't want to take the time to set up an account with another service.

DRM doesn't affect the vast majority of iTunes customers. If it did, I think we would see people switching over to other services.
justinpe

From the beginning I heard about Amazon's CHEAPER and DRM FREE Music store I have been (trying to) shopping exclusively from them and I have been telling people about it as much as I could...

Off the top of my head (i'm sure these have been said at some point)

The thing that causes me to not shop at Amazon is lack of selection sometimes I simply can't find it on Amazon and iTunes has it...

The other is ease of use with the program already open if I think of some song I want to hear iTunes allows for a much easier impulse buy...

Lastly for the common consumer I'm not sure anyone knows that you can buy songs from Amazon...everyone I have ever told about it...has come as new information to them.

uncreativeironicname

1. not enough people know Amazon does this
3. itunes is a very simple music manager

I'm sorry, can someone explain the appeal of iTunes to me? I bought one album from iTunes and i will never do it again. There is nothing worse than having a folder of music that I cant use when I decide to get rid of my ipod. I have bought a few albums from Amazon and it is easier and cheaper than iTunes. Plus it auto syncs with WMP or iTunes. But I think I am going to make the move back to buying CDs and ripping to FLAC (from amazon).

People buy iPods. The iPod information they get with it tells them to use iTunes. So they use iTunes. Plus no one knows about amazon's mp3 store. They havent advertised it enough. You can't just MAKE a better product and hope it wins. You do actually have to advertise it. Especially going against Apple.

theespacepope

It's been said already but the answer's obvious:

1) Amazon has only been going since September last year. Inertia takes time to overcome.
2) The interface needs improved. Remember the early incarnatons of iTunes were pretty horrible too.
3) There hasn't as yet been an aggressive marketing campaign. Imagine if Amazon did a 'Mac vs PC' style campaign showing all the weaknesses of iTunes, for example. Of course, there's no point in doing a serious campaign until you're sure of your product which, as explained in 2 above, Amazon aren't yet.
4) Distribution. Amazon is still very much at proof of concept stage. Once they get the model right expect a global launch and the marketing campaign mentioned in 3 above.

Early days yet.

Sleeper_Service

If you actually buy your music from Apple, it's trivial to strip the DRM from the files; there's an app which allows you to do this. I always strip the DRM immediately after buying so that I don't get stuck with unplayable files in a few years when I switch computers. DRM sucks, but the Apple Store/Itunes/Ipod ecosystem is super easy to use. I guess I would consider buying from Amazon (it's where I buy most books) but I actually think apple's gonna survive the Amazon onslaught. I also think they'll stop DRMing their files, once the record companies let them...

jackbrown

Let me paraphrase..."A tune with DRM is like any other product: its either a hazard or a benefit. If its not a hazard, then its not my problem."

I don't steal music,...so...DRM isn't an issue for me. I buy, I listen, its all good. Now, PRICE is something and yeah, I have seen a couple albums I wanted cheaper on Amazon...ok, that's a benefit.

BUT, I can buy 60$ worth of 15$ ITunes cards at Costco for 56$, and, (sell) toss them at the kids, and its all good.

Amazon needs the same card network as ITunes. I live in a low-density area where only 20% of my friends have credit cards...but, they buy those iTunes cards like mad because its (are you listening Amazon)...

...easy...simple...ubiquitous...available.

"Why Isn't Anyone Defecting from iTunes to Amazon's MP3 Store?"

Bc of marketing and life span, that's why. Just last week, someone expressed shock that they didn't know that there were other mp3 players/software like iPod + iTunes. Despite Amazon's success, most people haven't heard of it yet. iTunes has been around long enough to get marketing in their pocket. Heck, even Fox News reports when a big news version of iTunes is released.

Also, grabbing 2nd place after only being "fully launched" for 2 months is pretty good on Amazon's part. Now, like I said, they need to up their marketing. Not everyone remembers old Superbowl commercials :)

DW

write4truth wrote: "i'm so sick of itunes bashing. fact of the matter is, itunes is the most thorough and elegant solution there is, and most consumers enjoy the experience. apple is trying to go all drm-free, but the record companies wish to bring down the king by giving amazon and others a special deal on the side. they hate anyone else having power. but there's nothing wrong with a king of the hill when they're playing nice."

Most iTunes bashing is from people who are being paid to do so, including this site. The music industry used to be owned by musicians, recording engineers, and wealthy patrons of music. As of the early 70's, big nasty corporations bought up all the music labels, to control the "youth market" and for political and financial power.

The difference between the iTunes promotion and Amazon's promotion is that you don't win nearly as much music with Amazon. I'm a Pepsi addict and almost every cap got me a song on iTunes. With Amazon I have to punch in codes and do other useless junk and I still don't have a song.

Honestly, I didn't know that Amazon had a decent selection of DRM-free music until a couple of months ago. However, since then I'll check Amazon for a song before I check iTunes. But that's not really an indictment on iTunes, just my own moral objection to DRM.

quantumbits

Let's consider for a moment that there's a whole group of people who like to listen to music but don't know much about technology at all - ie. the main iPod userbase.

These people probably aren't aware of the limitations or lock-downs on their purchases and will only realize why a closed DRM system is a waste of time and money years later- (if) they decide to change over to a different MP3 player.

I imagine this is something that will take time because, as other posters have pointed out, people are used to using iTunes all-in-one solution.

RE: His_Shadow

I would hardly call Apple's DRM the least restrictive. I've bought a whole bevy of reasonably high-end MP3 players in the past and if Apple's DRM was as open as it should be, my tracks would have played flawlessly on all of them, which they did not.

iTunes works like shit on Windows which is why I switched back to WMP. If it were able to handle purchases as quickly and easily using the Amazon MP3 service..I would probably be inclined to buy more music.

legacye

You can remove DRM with a little effort, but you can't add fidelity to a downloaded file. I use ITMS only for podcast subscriptions-- I don't ever watch video on my iPhone, so ITMS has nothing else I require.

I for one have switched. Amazon's music service is completely integrated into iTunes for iPod owners, so it's as easy to buy, download, sync and play as anything from iTunes. It's cheaper. And of course it can be used later on even if my next music player is a Sansa or a Zune or an iRiver or an Archos or a something that I don't even know about yet.

Most people who still buy on iTunes are simply ignorant. They don't realize the mess they're getting themselves into when they decide later to move computers or switch to other devices. and they just don't know any better. And that's fine; Amazon needs to do a better job of educating and advertising (Pepsi points just aren't cutting it). Amazon needs a comprehensive, vicously anti-Apple campaign to really distinguish them from iTunes. I'm talking about really putting the screws to 'em - a knock down, drag out, publicity getting, mud-slinging fight. Think Hillary vs. Obama.

The other iTunes users, those who should know better, those Apple loyalists & apologists... well, there's just no excuse and there's no reasoning with them. They'll learn their lesson sooner or later, but until then they are just pitiable.

weatherman

This is an excellent question. I think it's because iTunes is so easy to use, whereas Amazon is not. Also, marketing has something to do with it: I haven't seen any Amazon MP3 ads.

simplicity, plain and simple. if the iTunes interface allowed one to browse tracks from the Amazon store, you would see a significant number of converts. because of the iPod's ubiquity, adding an extra step only creates useless complexity as an iPod owner in most cases would fail to recognize the benefit of DRM-less tracks... they would only see there's a "complicated" extra step involved.

amazon's penetration will hover around the market penetration of "other brands'" music players... and that is all.

oakie

The reason why is for the same reason that iTunes and the iPod gained such popularity in the first place, it's all bundled in one package and most people can't be bothered to try alternatives as long as their current one works "good enough".

Options and the freedom of choice rarely trump convenience for the average consumer.

Personally I look on eMusic first, then Amazon and lastly the Marketplace and rarely iTunes since I'm just not a fan of the iTunes interface but then again I'm probably what you'd call a power user so pulling music from different sources is child's play for me. I know some users that don't even know where their actual music files are.
SimianJones

I find it surprising so many people comment that they don't have a problem with the DRM. It's actually really rare that I listen to music on an iPod or on a computer. I listen mostly on my Squeezebox (which is awesome, by the way). Since that isn't made by apple, the protected aac files won't play on it. The other place I listen to music frequently is on MP3 CDs in my car, which also won't play protected aac files. So, I won't buy tracks from iTunes unless they're iTunes+ tracks. I still haven't tried out Amazon's MP3 store, but I do like Amazon for shipping me actual CDs. Or I drive over to Waterloo (the local record store)...

MillardFillmore

your player must be many, many years old if you can't play mp4 (aac). it's been around since the birth of itunes.

now yes, the fairplay drm wrapped acc (protected tracks) don't play on everything, but drm-free mp4 (aac) plays on most every modern player and are much smaller file size so you can fit more.

so if you keep converting aac tracks to mp3, then you are downgrading the quality and shorting yourself on quantity.

write4truth

I don't pay with credit card, because I don't have one. I borrowed a number to activate iTunes, and I purchase exclusively with gift cards bought at stores. A little silly, but that's the way to get cheap albums that don't ship to my city.

Amazon doesn't have gift cards at the grocery store in my neighbourhood. Apple does. Advantage: Apple.
rfaulder

To echo the above. I'm lazy.
And by lazy I mean: "click" is better than "click" *wait* "click" "confirm" "click."

Apple's true genius is not in making the difficult tasks easy. It is in making the easy tasks even easier.

Plus, while I do have a position on DRM issues in general (and so should probably be voting with my $$$), on a personal level, I just don't really care all that much.

92BuickLeSabre

@write4truth: Valid points, but the majority is always to deem the most successful as being evil.

What is most interesting is that digital music sales are increasing, the studios are not crumbling iTS they way they wanted to, and the majority of Amazon users are using iPod (aka: Apple's bread-n-butter) with their music. Apple is winning here.

Leonard Nimrod

I find this very hard to believe and would love to see some hard facts. For example, just how did the study determine that only 10% of iTunes users are shopping at AmazonMP3 now? How big was the sample? Was it truly representative of the demographics of iTunes Store or was it a self selecting survey with no discernible demographic modeling?

I'm curious because where I work I know a patterns has been set, one that I developed myself a couple a weeks after Amazon starting selling music online. I go to the iTunes store to search for new music each week. If it is available without DRM I buy it there. If not, I head over to Amazon to buy it. Amazon does a lousy job of showcasing music but you can't beat the lack of DRM.

davidwb

Here is why I am still with iTunes. Convenience mostly because iTunes is an app that is readily available on my dock. Since, I have used it before all I have to do is 1-click, and I have it.

mykalt45

I still like to buy the actual cd but I also use iTunes. I guess it's just that it's comfortable and easy to use. But I did try eMusic.com. The problem with them is lack of variety.

RE-L

Well, I only ever bought the occasional impulse track from iTunes to start with...and only cause it's so easy. I prefer to buy most of my music on CD. That and my subscription to emusic keeps me covered for the most part but when I DO get a yen for a quick download I tend these days to go to Amazon first.

But seriously - their downloading app sucks moose testicles. (to be fair, so does emusic's...)

Pixelologist
