He was obviously traumatized as a result of the company's negligence...would most people be traumatized by that? Probably not, but it's pretty clear that he was. The company, since it was their mistake, should pay to help him recvoer from that problem. $25 million is ridiculous, but why not pay for counseling?

It's still very wrong. Just because systems fail, it's no excuse to have multiple critical backup systems fail. I work in I.T. and if our backup systems didn't work, I'd be out of a job immediately if anything ever happened. Some things break, but multiple items that are designed for 100% uptime should not all fail. If you can't get a single critical phone line to work properly, it makes you wonder what else they can't get right.

I don't understand how the 6 figure settlement has a negative impact as well. Did all of his life savings go towards the lawsuit and then the settlement covered fees afterwards?

Those systems failed because sytems... fail. it happens. The security guards obviously sucked, and blame can be laid on them. But this guy is a total pussy if he claims he was 'traumatized' by being stuck in an elevator for 41 hours. Honestly. And to sue for $25 MILLION dollars just shows what a greedy faker he is. Proper compensation would be on the order of $10,000-$15,000 tops.

I had a cell phone, but I was stuck between P2 and P3, so no signal. You can go pretty nuts even after such a short time, I can't imagine being stuck 11 times longer.

The intercom worked in my elevator, but unfortunately the super was an idiot. She kept telling me that the service guy was on his way and refused to call the fire department.

When I finally convinced her to call 911, they showed up within 10 minutes. I told them how long I had been in there, and they immediately started yelling at the super. That was enough satisfaction for me, so I didn't try to get any other compensation. I probably should have asked for a month of free rent. :p

I'm assuming that after a few hours stuck in an elevator the average person would just be pissed off but would assume help is on the way. After forty hours I think it's fair to say you've passed the point of absurdity and death would be a major concern. if you've gone unnoticed for two full workdays, I don't think it's a stretch to think it could go on for a couple more days. More importantly, a financial impact will at the very least shake up the building management to ask why they're paying the security agency for absolutely nothing.
