@Accelerata: In all actuality, as you said yourself, the change must be inheritable. Since you don't inherit ribosomes (unless you count the ones already present in the oocyte, which would be replaced sooner or later), there is no mutation.

I never said anything to warrant your second point.

Though my studies of human genetics may be limited to the mandatory curriculum, I can still tell bullshit when I read it, thank you very much.

I believe that it is selfish to try to live forever since it steals resources from future generations. I don't look forward to dying but I don't fear it because my sentience and death cannot exist at the same time so therefore death doesn't exist until I die, I look forward to becoming part of the beauty that is nature.

Actually, I don't think exercise accomplishes what we're talking about here. This isn't about keeping healthy and reducing the risk of heart disease. This is about maintaining healthy cells, which can only be accomplished through a severe reduction in effectively halfing the normal diet.

@weatherman, what in the world do you base those estimates on?

Based on how much old people spend on pills in general, as long as production wasn't overly expensive, it would probably be a smart business decision to give them away. They could take the money out of their advertising budget. Why sell one type of pill to a select few when you could sell all your pills to many by making your best customers stick around for a bit longer?

Interesting stuff, and I'm all for it. But there are going to be very interesting consequences - for instance, living an extra 50 years is probably not going to be cheap. If you think the drug companies are charging a lot for drugs now? This is going to be very expensive - like $50k-$100k a year expensive. At least. So now there is yet another division between the classes. And of course the rich get even richer in the extra 50 years of life, passing on more wealth to their rich kids, who also live 150 years... could be a pretty interesting twist for society....

Also, morphological changes in proteins can be due to environmental changes as well as genetic, so observation of morphological changes does not necessarily imply genetic change in the ribosome. In other words, study more molecular biology before you critic another's work.

First off, scientifically speaking the article is ridiculously inaccurate, as mutations in ribosomes are simply impossible - the mutation could only occur in the gene that transcribes for the particular subunit of the ribosome.
Second of all, I wouldn't want a scientist who fails at writing concise articles messing around with my cell organelles.
Not to mention your diet would probably still need to consist mainly of something like that "bread in a can" you covered some time ago. Imagine eating that for the next 50 years. Exclusively.
