Let me just take issue with this point, rather than calling your whole post a complete piece of cr@p.

1) You've just said it doesn't matter how Vista works - which is just bleepin' hilarious

2) You used the word 'choice', when in fact new PC users don't have that choice, they get Vista shoved down their throats regardless - that's not choice.

Here's a clue for you - when Bill and Steve B both admit Vista's a total croc 'o sh!t, you'd be wise to at least back the party line, rather than look like a complete tool.

Or maybe that picture of Steve B is him describing how MS fanboys chowed down on his sweaty trouser snake as part of their hazing ceremony....

But seriously, MS or Apple aside, seems like anything that has software at it's core, gadget or otherwise, today IS a work in progress.
Gone are the days when if something did not work, it caused product returns, refunds and money lost to companies.
Now with software overlay on top of the hardware, manufacturers have a unique opportunity to ship crap and fix it later through a patch or firmware update.

Patch = fix bugs that were not supposed to be there in the first place.
Update = (fancier name for Patch)... so nobody will notice we screwed up!
UPGRADE = Give capabilities not previously thought of.

Unfortunately, most everyone is in the patch, update game.

Being today's king of the mountain is an advantage, but is never permanent.

Most OEM's have had to offer "downgrades" to XP do to consumer demand.

Many large organizations are still not supporting Vista. The university where I work is one of them -- and we have a site license!

Many Fortune 500 companies are wondering exactly what ROI they are getting out of their site licenses.

Like I said, Vista is a problem for Microsoft. Maybe Apple or Linux won't take off, but with viable alternatives Microsoft's big customers are in good position to win concessions from Microsoft when renegotiating those big contracts.

i love my xp, I dual booted at home to get used to vista but I always ended back booting to xp. vista is just too different, maybe good for people just starting to get involved with pc's with childlike-hand guiding options and menus. but for people that have used windows for at since windows 95 are accustomed to the slow gradual positive changes made to each version.

@aec007: I maintain about 100 Windows XP machines (and about 3 with Vista) for my day job. I run a laptop, a couple of desktops, and several servers on Linux of assorted flavors, and one netBSD, for my home business.

While more-or-less constant patching is normal, I have NEVER had a Linux machine just stop doing something that used to work without me doing something goofy, or a hardware failure. That, unfortunately, is routine on Windows machines; it worked fine yesterday, now it doesn't work, *and there's no way to find out why* because you can't get the source code or email the software engineer who wrote it and expect an answer, ever.

So, while I like XP for playing games (ti really is a decent gaming platform), when I want a "work-in-progress" that actually works, I'll look elsewhere - definitely not a Microsoft product, thanks.

@Gofastmazda: Yes, Microsoft does have overwhelming market share. Now. And probably for the immediate future. But if they keep making mistakes, it's going to get eaten away, and I don't think it'll be by Mac (because you're absolutely right, John Q. Public doesn't really care enough to switch brands, and Steve-O won't open the OS to other vendors), but by various Linux distros.

Let's face it, if you are a computer maker, and you're selling to J.Q. Public who just wants a machine that can do web surfing and word processing at a reasonable speed, do you sell him a $300 Linux-based machine, or do you try to sell him an $800 Vista-based machine and watch him go next door and buy a $300 Linux-based machine?

Acer already proved this works with the EEE PC, and it worked out fairly well for Everex too (Wal-Mart may have discontinued the machines in-store, but they sold like hotcakes while they were being offered, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them return for this year's holidays). A sea change is happening. It'll be slow, since there are several monied interests trying to keep it from coming to pass, but it has begun, and it is inevitable.

This is the real reason that Microsoft is now considering extending XP's life again. They see the writing on the wall, they know that most people want cheap, commodity-level computers, and they know that they greatly overplayed themselves by bloating Vista to all hell and reasoning that the consumers will just have to upgrade. And if they're smart, Windows 7 will be modular and able to be sold in a lightweight configuration. And that might buy them a few more years, in the end.

A vast majority of computer users couldn't care about Vista's performance standards. These are the majority of computer purchasers. The overwhelming minority are those who complain about its performance.

Just because a vocal tech community is up in arms over Vista doesn't mean MS is 'in trouble'. It just means a handful of people with an outlet to speak have an opinion; the majority of computer users don't share it.

It makes me laugh to see the apple fanboys prance about how superior their OS is, how MS is doomed, then to see market share results that come out to prove just how irrelevant apple is.

Microsoft has a real problem on their hands because Vista really is a major let-down. Too slow. Too resource-hungry. Too little in the way of improvements to make up for its shortcomings.

Meanwhile, OS X is pretty, solid, and leaner than Vista. Ubuntu Linux is pretty, solid, and way faster than Vista.

Windows 7 needs to arrive fast and be great.

Of course, I'm glad to see Microsoft's mistakes creating a bit more chance for competition on the desktop.

I think that SP1 for vista came early but late at the same time. I see vista getting up to SP3 before XP gets to SP4.
Thats kind of sad too.
Vista actually wasnt THAT bad for me i find that Vista ran a bit better than XP originally after i got the hang of it.
Well on XP again i'll get the hang of this too eventually. =]
It is a work in progress and it has a lot of potential but they need to slim it down substantially.
