I got mine today and it's awesome. Leopard preinstalled and included (still in shrink wrap) Core2Duo 2.66 w/4gigs of ram and a Geforce 8600GT w/256 mb ram. Everything as advertised. Clocked a very respectable 3585 on Geekbench.

Plus I got 3 calls from Psystar:

1. to let me know it had shipped.

2. to let me know UPS got it here a day early and it was on the truck for delivery.

3. to follow up and make sure I got everything and was happy with the machine.

Time will tell, but I think Giz may owe these guys an apology.

It strikes me that this might be a useful thing to have on a Mac, considering how many people use their Macs to play and edit video. A PC user running either Windows or Linux can add this capability with a $150 GeForce 9600GT. A Mac user? Assuming that Apple even offered such an upgrade, unless said Mac user invested $2500 in a Mac Pro when he got his system, he'll have to buy a brand new, $1300 iMac.

Apple sent a set of copiers to NY a decade ago with poor results. IBM licensed the x86 architecture to manufacturers all through the 80's and 90's and after over a decade of seeing it not be too bad a deal (royalty payments without manufacturing overhead), in the mid-90's, Apple tried licensing its architecture out to third-parties. The results were pretty poor, with the third-party manufacturers unable to offer either greater reliability or cost savings over an Apple-branded Mac. Back then, style wasn't a factor as Cupertino was shipping the same plain beige cases that everyone else was too.

You can upgrade the hard drive, RAM, and anything that connects via USA or Firewire. On some, you can upgrade the processor. What else do you need to upgrade to run iLife and Photoshop?

This whole hackintosh thing is because some people want to mess with the video card. The problem is that there are no games for OS X that take advantage of a super high-end video card, and OS X doesn't have drivers for a good many video chipsets. There's no point to having the latest and greatest video card in a Mac because you'll not use it.

Unless you do Boot Camp and play games in Windows.

But then, if you do that, you might as well just build a Windows gaming rig.

I can understand the nerd need to upgrade a PC, but that's NOT why Macs are cool, and it's NOT part of Apple's ideal when it comes to OS X. If you have non-Apple-standard hardware, you don't get the benefit of Apple's stability and upgrades, nor do you get the warranty associated with Apple.

A hackintosh basically takes away all the advantages of using a Mac, in favor of being able to upgrade the video card. Big whoop.

Have fun with your rip-off boxes, guys. I don't know why you'd buy one of these Psystar pieces of junk when you can buy a used or refurbished genuine Mac for the same price, once the Psystar is brought up to comparable specs.

I mean-- No firewire? Low RAM. Just junk...

Once the barn door is open on this hardware-cloning concept, who knows where it will go. If Apple sends software updates which happen to brick cloned machines, will that make them more beloved in the community? I think not.

People buy Macs because they are well-designed, well-supported, and just seem to work better than Wintel computers. The only downside I can see is that if marketshare increases, OS X users will be more likely to be targets of malware.

This is right out of the economic model we've been practicing for the past eight years. We got what we voted for, and cloned Macs are just another example of the DoJ's lack of focus.

If Psystar so much as delivers one machine with Leopard on it, Apple will be all over this.
The ones who'll really get shot in the belly will be the people in the osx86 scene, though. I fully expect Apple to implement some safety feature to keep something like the Psystar deal (if it's real) from happening again, thereby rendering a lot of work on Hackintoshs useless.

1) I agree with you in theory. I'm not a big fan of 9/11 conspiracists, having known a few people who died in the towers and having been right there at the time (I was at 100 Church Street to deliver papers to Corp. Counsel).
