I am surprised that it's not been mentioned yet, but there was a really good program on NOVA a while back (2002) that followed and documented the JSF Competition, which ultimately was between Lockheed Martin and Boeing (yes, Boeing). It called "Battle of the X-Planes" and was very well done. It's on Netflix for those of you interested.

Oh, and for those of you who thinks the F-35 is ugly, you should be thankful that the Boeing version was not selected....

@moogoescow: Yes, but it's far further ahead of the game than we need to be!

The design for the F-22 originates from the cold war era. The world changed, but the design didn't.

Economically it doesn't make any sense. As the Deputy Sec. of Defense said:

"The [F-35] performance and the F-22 performance is extraordinarily close. ... [The F-35] is a much newer airplane, so it also has very similar, if not in some cases better, performance with other attributes."

Each F-35 costs $35M, but the F-22 costs $120M! Given the fact that Air Force has finite financial resources they would be better served by quantity over quality.

LittleJon

Still, can't hate the guy for coming up with a really cool idea. Watching a F-35 open all the doors and take off vertically is an awesome sight. I can't wait for these things to get into production so we can see them at airshows.

Silent_Shark

I agree with Darrone too. It seems that, while planes are getting more advanced, they sure are hard on the eyes. I realize too that it's not an aesthetics contest like concept cars, but planes like the F-16, F-14 and back to WW2 era planes like the P-51, P-40 and so forth were all beautiful masterpieces to behold. Badass plane though, but I wouldn't get any scale models of it :P

Kaiser-Machead's Chips Ahoy!
