@spectator101:

You're 100% right. The whole "save the planet" thing is stupid, because the planet is fine. The planet will be here for millions more years.

WE, however, could very likely wipe out our own species and most others on the planet with this sort of behavior.

I don't think you grasp the point of environmentalism. It's not to "save the planet" because we KNOW the planet can't be destroyed by litter or plastics or even climate change. It's to save LIFE on the planet-- particularly our own lives-- because the very real danger of making the planet uninhabitable exists on the horizon.

If you can't get behind that, then how about the selfish reason: THIS MAKES FUEL PRICES HIGHER.

If they used less fuel (because they're fitting more in a single truck by using properly-sized boxes) then fuel would be consumed less, and the demand would drop (significantly, actually) and the price of oil would drop accordingly.

Oh, yeah... And you might like to go for a walk outside some day and breathe in fresh, clean air. That might be nice, dontchathink?

ZeroCorpse

Those large boxes are not free - you pay for them, along with unnecessary packing materials. large boxes are more expensive than small boxes (go to any container store, and you'll see that) so they have a greater profit margin and they can justify their outrageous shipping charges.

richinSF

@Adam Frucci: Adam...the problem in many cases is the 3rd party retailer a company uses to ship a product. The Dell flash drive order wasn't shipped by Dell. It was shipped by a 3rd party company like Ingram-MicroD who supply the same stuff to many of the other offenders you've listed. Does it make it right, nope. But if you bring to the attention of the company in question most likely they will do something about it. In Dell's case I'll speak from experience. I was a system development manager at Dell for many years. When we developed a product (like a system) we had to create customer kits for various user installable options. Everything that went into that kit...INCLUDING THE BOX was specified. Trust me....we wouldn't specify a refrigerator box for a memory module. Was a mistake made HELL yes. But... consider this Adam do you think there is a guy with a PhD sitting at the boxing station? Unfortunately we share the planet with dumb asses. Sometimes instead of it being the handy work of an evil conspiracy it is just the brain fart of a guy making minimum wage who when presented an opportunity to make a decision just screwed it up.

Rand

Bizarre, but the opposite is also true: I purchased a backyard patio set from Wal-Mart last year. It's a sectional sofa and chair with two foot rests -- eight pieces of steel furniture plus dozens of pillows. And it all came packed in a single box so small that I had to ask the driver if something was missing. And this wasn't flat-packed furniture, it was fully assembled and brilliantly packed in such a way that the box itself wasn't that much larger than a single piece of the furniture.
Some kind of engineer designed this, it was brilliant.

itsgene

Adam, have you tried talking to anyone at Dell, Newegg or Wal-Mart? Perhaps there is a reason they use large boxes, maybe it is deliberate?

The reason I say is because when I used to pick orders for Staples we found that the small boxes would often get lost by us or during transport, so if it was busy and there was a large box readily available we'd use it since the item would have better chance of making it to its destination.

Fierock

They pick average size boxes a box than can fit a flash drive and that same box can be used for a flatscreen 17in.

Newegg is known for putting everything in huge boxes because they have standardized box sizes.

Some things to know:
- If you get multiple boxes, they are probably from different warehouses
- Really large items (monitors, printers, etc) usually come in the original shipping box, not one provided by Newegg
- Multiple small items get combined into a larger box

Note that Newegg HAS switched to using padded envelopes for really small (e.g. flash drive) items, but only if you select the USPS option.

You CANNOT ship padded envelopes via UPS or FedEx ground - they only allow those sizes for express shipments. Trust me, I've tried.

Also, I re-use ALL of my Newegg boxes. I order a LOT of stuff from them (over $10,000 so far), so I have a wide variety of boxes, complete with packing peanuts. I never need to buy boxes.

bsoft

Flash Drives are tough to package as it is. Retail stores wont let you pack in anything less than what we have now because they are easy to steal. As for cardboard boxes, some companies only have certain sizes to cut down on costs, so it is what it is. Wal-Mart surprises me cause they are leading the pack when it comes to sustainable packaging, but lazy people over rule corporate idealism.

Istrutnice

I really hate to tell you this, but these companies ARE being responsible. *Financially* responsible. We all know that's all that they really care about. Here's how:

-It's easier and cheaper for them to reduce the number of different boxes they are using for shipping. 8 different box sizes or 3? Hrmmm. Less inventory and less thinking are good things.

-If under a certain size, shipping is calculated by weight - not volume. The USPS, for instance, doesn't care if it is in a box (under 12x12x12) or a padded envelope. Shipping costs were the same for overnight and priority. In fact there were more economical options for boxes. Also, for boxes larger than 12x12x12, rates were only slightly higher. Is this different for FedEx / UPS / DHL?

-You'll also notice that packing materials are absent in some of these shipments. Another victim of cost reductions. These products (in most cases) are already sufficiently packaged and will survive bouncing around in that box.

Times are tough, and companies are cutting back where ever they can. Is this practice slightly less eco-friendly? Yes. You're fitting less in the delivery truck and wasting a little bit of cardboard (that you are going to recycle anyways, right?). Does it help out a corporation's bottom line? Yes, it is likely that they are saving a ton of money and boosting productivity. Are they risking an odd consumer backlash for putting tiny products in big boxes? Yes. In this economy, companies are going to make that trade.

Sorry, I'll stop pissing on the consumer backlash parade now.

Stupid corporations!!

anatak

Fair enough.

There's obviously a need for the boxes though, or they wouldn't be purchased, which would cause the boxing companies to produce less, etc, etc.

We recycle both the cardboard boxes and the plastic peanuts (Mailboxes Etc will take them back). I keep one large wastebasket full of plastic peanuts on hand to use in packaging items I sell on eBay. But it still annoys me when a huge box arrives containing a small item. Yesterday I got bluetooth earhanger from buy.com that arrived in a box big enough to have held ten of them, easily. Maybe more companies should adopt Amazon's practice of wrapping self-adhesive corrugated cardboard around the item to form an envelope, when practical.

infmom

@Rabid Penguin: Forget the cost to recycle. There's also the cost to cut down the tree, run the machinery to turn the wood into cardboard, and ship the wood/cardboard all over the place. All of these steps require energy (mostly in the form of fossil fuel currently). That is the main reason reduction is always preferable to recycling, not because recycling costs energy (which of course it does).

Cardboard and paper are made from trees that are farmed specifically to make cardboard and paper. Box size isn't terribly relevant. The bubblewrap, however, is an issue; too much plastic and too little air. One thing that my vendors use that I appreciate is what I refer to as "air pillows" which are pretty much what they sound like; a long string of large (about 6x9 inches) bubbles made of thin plastic. They are mostly air, provide good protection for the merchandise, and the small amount of plastic is a huge improvement over the tons of styrofoam peanuts (aka "ghost turds") that I use to have to dispose of.

Guy-Fawkes

Recycling paper isn't environmentally benign. It is generally *better* than creating "new" paper, but recycling involves chemicals that you don't want on your food, in your child's baby formula, and in your water. So, while recycling is good, the best bet is to conserve and not overuse resources.

I think it is appropriate to call on corporations to conserve on packaging whether its boxing or wrapping. If every 2GB flash drive were shipping in a huge box, it does have a huge impact given the millions (maybe billions?) of packages shipped daily. I share people's concern about relying on data to make informed decisions, but I don't think data exists as to how many products are shipped using over sized boxes - at this point is is a common sense issue. Conserving is a better choice than being wasteful.

berribrand

I had a newegg order for two ethernet cables that came in separate boxes from two different parts of the country. I think what's even worse than over-packaging the items was the fact that it took two separate trucks to deliver my order! I can't think of a more inefficient process. I know everyone keeps arguing that the trucks and planes will transport regardless of my item, but it seems like this happens enough to have an impact on route scheduling. Just think if every order was in an appropriately sized box and the entire order was contained in one box. I think that would definitely make a difference.

Singlespeed

I think you're getting too wrapped up in the material of the box as being recyclable. The major environmental impact here is fuel consumption and exhaust. if using shipping using boxes that are twice the size that they need to be, half as much product can fit on a plane or truck. that's 2x the fuel consumption which drives up shipping costs and has trickle down effect. AND twice as much exhaust/impact from an atmospheric perspective as well.

don't worry that the boxes are cardboard. that's the least of the problems with this issue.

vshank

I just got an HDMI cable from Newegg.com and it was sadly put into a box with a bunch of packing peanuts (sorry no pics, I already threw the trash out). The size of the box kind of matched the cable but really they could have just put it into a shipping envelope and that would have been better I thought. No peanuts and no box! I also got an AppleTV from Apple the same day. The box it was shipped in was a little bit larger and Apple put styrofoam corners so the AppleTV's fit snuggly inside. I wish really there was no styrofoam and the shipping box was just a tad larger than the product's box. I remember when I got an iPod years ago and it was shipped that way, one box just slid in the other. I prefer that.

Late_Night

I think this is a dumb thread. As far as I know shipping costs are all determined by weight (to an extent). While a cardboard box may be a little heavier than a manilla envelope, its reusable, you can always put a label on it, and its standard. You think the minimum wage people in shipping are competent enough to individually package orders when they are getting thousands a day? Ya right, that causes problems and that's why they don't do that.
Once shipping costs change enough, this will as well. Right now this practice is probably saving them money.
Let economics decide this problem.

zsleek7

First of all, Newegg doesn't ship you 5 pieces of paper for invoices when you place one order (I love how this guy has strewn about all the invoice papers in a big heap).

Secondly, if all those boxes were stacked inside of each other (which I find very hard to believe since at least the two boxes on the left look to be exactly the same size), then why is there packing material still inside?

Perhaps Newegg doesn't pack very well, but at least in this case the photo looks staged to me.

jeff3410

Food for thought; not defending the inappropriately sized shipping boxes, but there was probably a reason the inkjet cartridges from the above photo shipped in multiple packages (different warehouses, shipping centers, etc).
