Anyways, I would say with the way more video content, and broadband are increasing.. that 1 Tb at least in computers will start to become a standard practice.

I have about 1 TB +/- in HardDrives right now, which surprisingly enough is almost filled up! So really, the more the merrier!

" Ever notice all these libraries have demos that sound too....perfect."

Agreed. "Perfect" in all the worst meanings of the word! It seems like it would be so easy just not to quantize so much. Even if they must correct every little error, giving the timing a little breathing space would make it sound more life like. Plus, when real pianists play, the slight sound of accidently tapped neighbor notes is one of those things that make it sound real (or good!). I mean, imagine Ray Charles without on-purposely missed notes!

It's like the mistake of early piano simulations that underestimated the importance of the initial percussive element to its identifying sound. It's interesting to ferret out early examples and see how all the emphasis was on the piano tone, no emphasis was on the initial thwack. And as a result, super unrealistic.

But... yeah. I've always been amazed at the overwhelming cheesiness of music instrument demos! It's like there's some kind of universal expectation that demos have to be as cheesy and "notey" as possible...

As for Melodyne 2.0: also salivating as well. Of course, by the time it ships, 1 TB will only cost $99 from Newegg, so Melodyne's voracious appetite for storage won't seem quite so onerous.

frigg

@frigg: Totally agree with you. Sympathetic vibration is probably the most complex interaction that is missing. I bookmarked that piano link. Ever notice all these libraries have demos that sound too....perfect. The sequencing has no human error in it, which is a bit of a turn-off. I have Melodyne right now and can't wait for 2.0. It's going to be sick! The only thing that sucks about Melodyne is that it eats up disk space fast. I wish it could store data without having to record the actual audio again.

johnnyabnormal

@johnnyabnormal:

One of the difficulties with sampled pianos is that every sample is discrete. There's no interaction. On a real piano, notes interact. The sound of a 3 note chord is not the same as the sound of three notes simply added together. Velocities, shades of pedaling (pedals aren't either all on or off), harmonic interactions, sympathetic vibrations all contribute to -literally- millions of sounds beyond a collection of individual notes. A true piano sample library would either have to be smart enough to intelligently add these variables, which are pretty complex, or have huge reserves of samples to take into account note combinations and playing styles.

I don't mean to sound like a piano snob! Like any good Giz reader, I love manipulating piano samples in MIDI just as much as the next guy. It's just interesting how such a common instrument is actually so difficult to replicate in a test tube. Some instruments seem so easy to sample, others require super computers.

As far as piano sample libraries go, you're probably familiar with Ivory. While no more a real piano than Rupaul is a real female, I think it's got a little more life to it than Sampletekk:

Also, I think the most "danceable" development in the near future is melodyne's new "direct note access." It lets you record a real piano, polyphony and everything, and then manipulate individual notes as easily as moving around MIDI data. (Of course, you'd have to have a good piano well miced to begin with, but imagine what Glenn Gould could have done with this!). Check out the mad scientist in the vid:

It seemed like enough at first, but I have quickly run out of hard drive space. 300 is simply NOT ENOUGH. I MUST BUY MORE. Probably a TB this time, but for some reason I feel a TB would be dangerous by itself, and I'd probably have to RAID two of them. What a waste, huh? Not only that, but if you've got the space you don't have to sacrifice quality when ripping movies. You can do a straight rip and not have to worry about fillin' up yer GBs. Plus, it's faster to write a disc image, rather than rip and encode with, say, Handbrake. However, things like the Ps3 I don't think accept ISO, and have no hard drive space anyway ... so you may want to balance that against quality.

MastaFalse

@frigg: I have some other sampltekk pianos that I was sorely disappointed with, but this one was the best one I could find (and damn cheap too). There certainly is something more visceral and dynamic with a live piano recording that hasn't been duplicated with sampled ones. I'm not ruling it out though. Just think when might be kicking around in 5-10 years. There might be some pretty "danceable" libraries coming out then.

That said, maybe my bass note velocities weren't loud enough on that second clip...haha. You can easily overlook that stuff when mousing in notes and parameters. I'll also be the first to admit that on a scale of 1-10 I'm a 5 in the mix dept!

johnnyabnormal

@johnnyabnormal: "Probably one of the most convincing ones I've used is this one: [www.sampletekk.com] "

Ummmm.... I'm actually not a big fan of the Sampletekk! I find it a bit flat. However, in some mixes it may be just the right thing, just as, say, (exaggerating to make the point) an SPX90 type reverb sometimes works well in a complex mix by virtue of its relative anemia. In fact, in some mixes, I'll even crave an over-the-top fake piano cause it's perfect in context. I mean, imagine Salt N Pepa using a Bosendorfer instead of a Casio! Yuck.

Not that the Sampletekk doesn't sound real-ish. I mean, sure, a lot of people wouldn't question it in a short spot, but if I listen to the Sampletekk on your second demo, with no other instrument.... Ideally, that's the kind of cue I'd want to record on a real piano. If you moused that in, that's impressive! But on a real piano, you'd just sink into the bass notes with more weight and volume... it would just be more viscerally satisfying, less sequency, more nuanced and 3-dimensional. And I swear, there's not a Pear audio cable in sight!

I like the first demo a lot better. The piano writing itself sounds more pianistic. Kind of French, actually! And the string part works really well with it.... beautiful counterpoint, well mixed, a perfect little thing! Also, the addition of the extra instrument helps make the piano sample seem less canned. Less exposed, more believable. Plus, it just feels right in combination with the animation. It's like the hybrid styles of animation and music are kindred spirits.

But as a genuine replacement for a flesh and blood piano, when you figure on how many actual variables there are spilling out a real piano, if you wanted to genuinely replicate them all, that would be some serious hard drivage. Sampletekk version 2025.

frigg

I have to say. If you do any video editing at all, you need all the space you can get. Not exactly related to home use, I was just touring a post-production house. For their one color-correction suite by itself, there are over 24 hard drives RAIDed together. Each was 500GB. There were pleanty more of those RAID-type bunches for all the other suites too. That is a lot of space and that was a small Production house in comparison to others.

pliSkiNAKE

A truly convincing piano sample library is going to have to be larger on orders of magnitude than anything that currently exists - Ivory, Vienna Instruments, whatever. When you add up all the sympathetic vibrations, harmonics, the nuances of human performance, pedaling... as impressive as things are (as impressive as they always are), forget about replicating the human brain, show me a piano sample that can pass for wood, steel, and felt.

I have 6 desktops/laptops with various amounts of disk space. I currently have a 1.5TB on the network in which 90% of that is my ripped DVD collection. I also have a huge collection of laserdiscs - about 1/3 of which hasn't been released on DVD - which I plan on ripping (because, dammit, Han Solo shot first).

So it really comes down to video or work related items... if you are into having everything online and instantly available then many TBs will be required. Otherwise you get can buy with a few hundred gig easily.

I plan on building a 4 TB farm for my video and dedicate the 1.5TB to work related items.

regexp

Although by the same token, some computer scientists believe it won't be until a genuine "chaos-based" system is deployed that a human brain can be replicated. Some of the same chaotic structures that make the human brain suck, are also at the core of its massively parallel ability to grok patterns out of diffuse data clouds, and choose just the right handbag to go with that perfect summer blouse.

frigg

I just bought a 1 TB drive recently and it's been doing me good but I'm already filling it up a little too fast. The old 500 GB that I previously used now act as the backup. Areca is ran every other week to incrementally backup data. If there was a faster solution, I would have opted for it but Areca is the best freeware I can find for backup purposes.

What we all need is a centralized storage. Maybe when Internet hit SATA speeds (3 Gbps). I'm sure most of us have duplicate data such as music and HD movie collections. I'd rather have a subscription based service that allows you unlimited access to anything on the common centralized storage any time you wish, than storing these things myself and hopefully the drive doesn't crash.

You can have a personal storage space at home for your personal things. Such as photos, docs, etc.

strang

@Salinger: "The only time i will ever be content is when hardrives reach the speed and approxiamte capacity of a human brain."

I dsagree (implying I know more about what makes you content than you do...). Reaching the capacity of the human brain is a milestone, but not an endpoint. If anything, it's a tipping point beyond which computers will exceed - and augment - human cognition.

Every era has the same conversation: are these many bytes, gigabytes, terabytes, petabytes, zebibytes, whateverbytes, enough? The conversation is always in the context of current systems ["this amount is "OK" but I wish I had a little more"], but current standards are and will always be surpassed, and with accelerating speed.

As computational systems accelerate exponentially, there will never be "enough." Achieving a virtual brain on a circuit will only feed the demand for radically surpassing it. As a result, humans will increasingly harvest all available matter and energy on Earth and beyond for computation.

A rock, for example, with all its electrons potentially available as storage, probably has more latent capacity than all the hard drives existing today. To the rock, add the mountain, the planet, the solar system, the galaxy, and anything else that can be computationally exploited, each milestone making it possible to reach out and consume the next.

frigg

I think they are awesome (and you can access them ANYWHERE and from ANY PC!). Movies (yeah there is porn in there... so what!) + Pictures + Games + file) I am still at only 1.5 TB.

You can compare this to houses as well. For instance, take Soulja Boy's house compared to 50 Cent's house.

Now, 50 Cent has a seriously huge place. I know, I've seen it on cribs. And it's full of stuff.

Soulja boy has a medium sized, entry level rappers house. His house is full of stuff too.

The point is, you got a big house, you gotta fill it to be cool. You got a big NAS? You gotta fill it too!

igothandle

Considering I haven't even touched the 1100+ live music collection, and I backup everything, I see many more TBs in my future.
I get by just fine with an 8GB mp3 player - no it doesn't have ALL my music, but then again, I have music i dont listen to anymore, so why would i carry that around with me?

Of course, not having a broadband connection to call my own might have something to do with it. All i got is my 30 gig laptop. And it;s still bogged down from last minute grabs from stage6 before it went down : (

nutbastard

I hear that, I lost an external 500GB drive when it fell off of my desk about 4 months ago. The problem is, at large capacities, you can't really back up data, your best bet is to back up irreplaceable things (work, photos, etc.) and just accept that your digital music/movie collection can disappear at any time.

Secret Agent Man

There are only two kinds of Hard Drives - those that have failed, and those that WILL fail. :)

If you are participating in the "digital world", whether it be photos, movies, music, or all-of-the-above, then you simply MUST save all your data in two places or at least on mirrored drives. (3 TB storage means 1.5 TB actual content)

Purchasing and regularly replacing hard drives absolutely MUST be in your budget, because you most definitely want to replace them BEFORE they die and not after.

Just know that all the money you WOULD have had to spend on physical shelves and entertainment cabinets can now be spent instead on buying new mirrored HDs every two years. Whether the old ones are still running or not...

YodaMac

So I guess, I really don't have that much space after all.

We have two desktops and three laptops in our household...and one Tivo. One of the desktops hosts DVDs that we may want to view in different room. The formatted 640 GB hard drive can hold about 65 or so DVDs. That estimate is for 9GB dual layer DVDs. Compare that size with a dual layer blu-ray disk, which is 50 GB. Hmm...a formatted 1 TB hard drive will hold less than 20 such titles. Ouch.

Pictures and music take up space, but video will be driving this situation for the near- to mid-term.

scuba_steve_1

Exactly, before it was just documents and maybe a couple simple programs. Then it evolved into more and more complex programs requiring more space, then the evolution of High Speed online games with unbelievable graphics...not to mention our digital photo albums, or our entire music collection on mp3...now we have moved into movies and our dvd collections being compressed and saved as well.

I think this whole data madness thing may be whats driving my next home network setup with my webserver/router and media pc being ultra light linux boxes that store all dynamic content on a nice NAS instead of having my data spread out all over the place. Even my desktop I want to only have HD space for applications store everything else on the NAS. It'd make it way easier to back up your data via just a nice Raid 5 array of 1TB discs or something. *shrug* Just a pipe dream atm.

TheCyberBob
