They want someone to develop meat, by taking muscle cells (or stem cells possibly) and using technology, cause them to grow into a muscle matrix.

It's mainly a publicity stunt because it gets them lots of free press. This type of research is already going on in labs all over the world and they know that. Several years ago, some researchers successfully had fish cells grow into a hunk of living fish muscle....they cooked it, but they didn't eat it. They cooked it to see if the texture and smell were the same as the source fishes flesh...they were. Hell, I would have tried eating it. Cowards.

The reason this type of research is being done has little to do with preventing cruelty to animals, and more to do with food safety. Mad cow disease, mercury poisoning in fish, etc are causing concern about food safety. By growing muscle tissue in nutrient baths, you would be able to make sure the meat you eat is disease free, pesticide free, etc.

There is NO question this technology works, the difficult part is getting it to be economical and scalable to handle feeding billions of people. Animals are incredibly efficient at producing muscle and much cheaper at this point.

Oh yeah, and PETA sucks.

I have no problem with the cause itself, even if I personally think they interpret "cruelty" so broadly as to be a ridiculous, if not simply inaccurate.

Absolutely some of their tactics have utilized the press to embarrass public figures into changing their ways - but little of that work required their most sensationalist tactics. In fact, their best work relies on essentially undercover ops and investigative journalism.

The sensationalism is just a form of collective narcissism that just makes a joke out of social justice movements as a whole.

They are the single-issue equivalent to the college kids waving signs for everything from Mumia to Composing while they threw rocks in Seattle a few years ago. What the hell were they even yelling about? And how in the world was that the most effective way to get their message across?

Poor strategic action turns off the mainstream and demeans and diminishes the power of organizing, protests, marches, and political action. It makes everyone who is angry and carrying a sign seem like a radical nutjob detached from people's real lives.

And it really pisses me off.
