@Michai: So harsh! Actually, Windows Vista is great if you don't need to connect any peripherals, install or play any after-market games, install or run any other after-market software, use a search system that reliably finds relevant files, navigate a file system, copy any files, read a simple text document from a different kind of computer, provide useful feedback during drive defragmentation, or otherwise do anything that is productive or enjoyable with a computer. In fact, if you are one of the inestimable people in the world who wants a computer with a pretty interface that comes with a decent mahjong game and can keep your lonely self company with confirmation prompts that are almost frequent enough to be mistaken for conversation, Windows Vista may be about as close to the perfect operating system as there can be.

I actually reinstalled Windows Vista over the weekend after a little incident involving the beta version of Ubuntu 8.04 on my secondary hard drive, the master boot record on my primary drive, and a Windows XP administrator password that I either forgot or was mistaken about in the first place. I am enjoying the pretty interface in Windows Vista and the faster file-copying times that Service Pack 1 brought with it, but there is a pretty good chance that I will want to try Windows XP Service Pack 3 soon. I just wish it came with Mahjong Titans and the Windows Sidebar. And maybe Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Calendar.

Here's hoping Dell offers their tiny new computers with Ubuntu. I would love to have a GNU/Linux computer that is better looking than my Windows workstation; the humor value alone would be wonderful, but I love the idea of small, efficient computers and as long as I have one that can run the software I need for my work and plenty of games that I actually want to play, I am all for exploring other options.

Brian Sexton

@impreza: A policy of using 1999 displays or display designs could be very green indeed: reduction of packing materials, reuse of old designs and manufacturing configurations, recycling of old bezels, or any combination of those things.

OK, so less-funny-than-it-was-in-my-brain humor aside, the design may not look very inspired, but it looks fairly clean and the quality of the image is probably good. Still, the computer seems to be the point, not the display, and I am sure you could connect such a computer to a display of your liking. That metal base might look nice with an Apple Cinema Display.

Brian Sexton

IT probably come with an Intel integrated 3100 graphics card on a custom micro-MoBo. It will utilize notebook sized RAM and processor. Chances are it will be a slower Penryn (45nm) C2D chip and probbaly come with 2GB standard (4GB max), which means to RAM slots. Price will be probably start $399 and go to $699 depending on HW configuration.

Small and custom has never been cheap in the computer world. And I suspect the focus on 'green' is to make the higher price seem more appealing.

Leonard Nimrod
