About the security cams... considering the story about the guy who spent 40 hours in an elevator and no one noticed it, these guys could also get away with it.

The news says that they only got caught because of a few coincidences...
The first one is that right after they installed the whole thing, someone from the police went there, noticed that the door was busted (they have electronic locks), added that to the fact that only one of the ATMs was working and then requested the security tape.

If it wasn't for that coincidence, they probably would've succeeded...

Now you see, if they had just done it a few times they wouldn't have gotten caught. As usual, it's greed and stupidity that does in the criminal here.

Plug it in, get a day's worth of data, then get it out of there and never come back to that location.

"Every few days" means it was there for quite a while, and it means that the people, mall security, and people familiar with banking practices had more chances to figure out something was amiss.

It's the idiots who keep committing the same crime over and over (and in the same spot!) that get caught the quickest. The smart guys move around a lot and don't use the same trick more than a few times within a given period.

Typically for bank machines like this (a Diebold, I believe), it takes at least an hour to cut into said safe with a cutting torch. Much easier/safer to do what these clowns attempted.

In the days before triple DES security there was an awesomely ballsy scam here in the us. A crew bought a used Fujitsu machine (it was the first one with electronic journaling) and hauled it to a huge mall somewhere (I forgot where), dollied it inside in front of everyone, and just plugged it in. It was not hooked up to the transaction host and (obviously) did not have any cash inside. They rigged the machine to go through the transaction process until the desired info was obtained, whereupon the machine would give an error message to the user. Every few days the thieves would show up, download the EJ files to a floppy and clone the cards.

They eventually got caught, but not before stealing over $100K.
