It's all about convergence and Apple has recently begun to realize that with the iPhone and iPod Touch.

My fourth gen 20GB ipod worked fantastic for about 1 year and 1 week. Hard drive failure. Yeah *just* out of warranty. Guess that happens when you use it as a portable HD as well. I just sold it on ebay as broke for 60USD. Then I bought a 8GB Ipod touch and loved it jailbroken and everything. Then sold it on ebay for a profit and bought a 4GB Iphone cheap used and jailbroke it and unlocked and use it on T-mobile.

Apple should probably feel good about the fact that there are so many on here that just HATE them. I honestly can't say I hate any of the other companies or players, I just like the iPod/iTunes experience. I have a 3G 20GB that I have used for 4 years now DJ'ing and listening to in the car, and it still works great. That and one of the original 512MB shuffles for the gym that I can barely feel in my pocket, (though with the way it's designed, I can control while it's still in my pocket). Everytime new ones come out, I try to rationalize upgrading, but haven't yet. That may change when my Verizon contract is up in June, and I switch Blackberry for iPhone.

What some feel is too controlled an environment (iTunes), is perfect for me. I don't want to drag music into file trees, I like being able to put a CD in, have it come up with all the tags, import it to iTunes, and put what I want on the iPod. It's easy.

Heh. My answer is "four," but that's misleading. One's a direct-from-Apple refurb first-gen nano and the other three are full size pods I bought for (relatively speaking) peanuts "broken" on eBay. If you know what to look for, they are insanely easy to fix.

I also have a Creative MuVo that has a built-in FM radio, and that's what I take to the gym.

I got my 1st and only ipod as a company xmas present. An 2 gig ipod shuffle. No display, only worked with itunes, no radio, and cant use it as an external drive. Plus I could'nt upgrade the memory. So I sold it for $50 to an apple fanboy at my office.
I went to Fry's and got me an off the shelf 4 gig MP3/video player that also uses SD memory cards, also plays XVID, WAV, ACC, AVI, WMA, and a few other formats I cant think of. Oh it does lyrics, has an FM radio, external speaker, audio recorder, is USB rechargeable, and cost me $40.00 new.
The 2 1/2 screen isn't great but it's 100% better than what the shuffle offered. And I can use it for file storage or transfer from any PC anywhere.

The 10 GB is only for podcasts while commuting, the 20 GB is for general use and the 160 GB is for work. It only needs to be charged once a week. I've only placed 70 GB of my collection on it so far. I listen to just about everything except for Country, Cajun and Celtic. I just let it play on shuffle get a great variety plus some wonderful serendipitous stuff. I love surprises. Of course, I can't have Blowfly on the playlist at work but I've got a load of other fun stuff.

I had a 5G 30GB, and I got my girlfriend a Gen 1 Nano. After having the 30GB replaced twice for stupid failures of the hardware, I got a Zune 80GB and just recently a Zune 4GB.

Love, LOVE, these Zune's. If Apple would come out with a 80/160GB touch style iPod, I would probably give them another shot though. But the reliability of the Zune compared to my iPod's is hard to ignore.

2 non-iPods:

1. Diamond Rio 256 MB - still works, sorta... turns on and plays, but volume and menu functions are toast. Use it for jogging, as I load songs by a 512MB SD card

2. Samsung YP-K5, 4GB. Decent little player with a decent speaker for those times I can have a radio at work but no headphones, and the MP3 alarm clock function seemed gimmicky, but has made it a good travel alarm as well.

What could be next? Don't know, but if a 32GB flash memory player that can handle FLAC, and is compact in size, with long battery life is out there, that's what I'm looking for.

Three. Four if you count the one I sent back to Apple and they returned me a new/refurb.

3G-20GB w/click-wheel (that's the one that got sent back and returned)

1st gen silver mini that i bought for my girlfriend and mysteriously stopped working for her. then i bought her a

2nd gen shuffle (orange) that she really likes (but the not having a display sometimes isn't convenient)

i've since inherited her mini and it works flawlessly (user error?) but the battery doesn't last very long. i mostly charge it all the time.

my 3g was awesome while it worked, but there towards the end i had to frequently pry the two sides apart and disconnect the disk drive and reconnect to fix some kind of problem. (???) it worked for a while like that and then just died altogether. i liked having all of my music with me, but after "suffering" the loss of 3/4 of my pocketable music, i actually find it refreshing to not have to scroll through so much bullshit to get to a song i want.

i'm in the market for a new one. if it weren't for the iTunes playlists i already have set up, i'd go zune or creative just to mix it up. frickin' dealer lock in. it's all about convenience and work already accomplished.

Stopped working after 7 months. That was the first and last of my iPod purchases. At least i didn't have to use iTunes (drag and drop hack), so the experience wasn't that bad. The first iPod that are good are the Touch - for its screen size - but that should have been released 5 years ago. Back then I bought an Archos AV400.
Nowadays, I listen to music on my SE K800 (need to upgrade that!) and show pictures/videos/movies on my Fujitsu U1010 (UMPC).

I have ONE ipod 5th gen and I just purchased an iphone a month ago, one of the few in Canada.

Personally I like the 5th gen the best, I like the glossy white or black over the early models or the current 6th ipod. I think the touch is here to phase out the "regular" ipod. the touch will be "the NEW ipod" marketed along with nano and shuffle. The nano might even go all touch.

5) 16GB touch (birthday gift from wifey, I wouldn't have gotten myself, though)

Waiting for June, and the 3G iPhone 2.0. That will probably replace both my 16GB touch and 2GB nano.

2004 HP-branded iPod. died and replaced three times before warranty expired. Granted I ran it to the ground, I left it on all night and played all 20 gigs of music just to set all their play counts to 1.
2005 iPod shuffle 512mb. I think I replaced it once. Dropped it plenty of times and also left it on all night since it didn't have a damn timer function.
2006 iPod shuffle 1gb. I don't learn my lesson. Only got another one because I got a sweet speaker system for it at the flea market for 10 bucks. Some savings.
2007 iPod touch 16gb. Put an invisibleshield on it the moment I got it. Unfortunately the damn thing doesn't cover the black trim around the sides. Thank god there's a lifetime warranty on the shield.

I look at the sony walkman and all i can remember was the horrendous sonicstage program.

I got the 80GB iPod Video in December 2006. In February 2007 I got a refurbished 1GB iPod Nano from the Apple store. I didn't like that storage capacity for the Nano, kept it, but also got the 1GB iPod Shuffle refurbished (the one with clip) two months later.

Than recently in November 2007 I bought the 16GB touch. It had dead pixels and they released the 32GB so I returned it for a refund and decided I didn't want it. In that time my music collection went to around 38GB (it is now almost 50GB) and I'm waiting for a possible 320GB iPod Classic in September. If not I'll settle for the largest one they come out with.

Also since then we got my dad a refubished iPod Shuffle (all of these are from the Apple online store) and my sister a 4GB refurb Nano to accompany her 30GB iPod Video. All in all as you can see, we're pretty stocked on iPods.

@CBMTTek: Restrictive DRM? Unless you purchase from iTunes, there's no reason why you would encounter the DRM in the first place.

This whole DRM thing is not a really good reason to avoid any player so long as any of these players that come bundled with access to proprietary audio are not obligated to that proprietary audio.

To the people saying that they'll never own one, I thought I'd never own a Zune, yet I bought one anyway. That said, I'm glad I still have my iPod. I guess it's good to keep my options open. If I refuse to buy something no matter what, who knows if I'm actually missing out on something I'd actually enjoy the best.

Up until 2002, I was a pure Windows kid.

2... my 15 GB 3G iPod bought in 2003... and my iPhone. I still haven't filled up the 15GB (or ripped all my CDs). It stays hooked up in my car, and I use my phone for exercise/on the go listening. Never had a problem with reliability, it's been dropped, scratched, and exposed to extreme heat and cold in my car and so far it's been perfectly fine.

- 2G 1GB Shuffle, which was a gift

I've never had any issues, except when I went running with the 2G and the jostling temporarily froze it. Hence, the Shuffle, for exercise. I like having to move stuff on and off the 5G (I have 80+ gigs); it keeps me familiar with my music.

as well as

and dozens of 1GB mp3 dongles.

and I'm currently on an 8GB Zen V Plus

I should note that most of the iPods were purchased to be sold at a higher profit to Apple fans.

Although I've played around with them and did like the scroll wheel and on-board software quite a bit, the internal components are cheap as shit.

The iPods are also the most likely to turn faulty within a short period of time or stop working when dropped. I've never had similar problems with any of the other brand players, particularly the Zen.

LOL, wow! I didn't think the "I never owned" would have that many votes.

Still, yeah... never owned one.
MP3 players, I started with Nike/something (can't even remember) and right after that I started using cellphone mp3... at first it was a pain, but after I bought a Sony Ericsson cellphone I never felt the need to get a standalone mp3.

As for videos, I bought an Archos604. Still using it. And my recently purchased PSP.

So, no need for iPod.

Also, kinda weird, but I can only think of one among 20 or 30 friends of mine who does have an iPod.

Most others either use their cellphones, or have like cheaper mp3 players... usually chinese cheap stuff.

But that's just Brazil to you. Though I have seem some people with iPods, they are not that much popular here.
Considering it's a pretty obvious "hey, come and steal it from me" sign, it's kinda understanding why.

Waited until they surpassed 120 gigs, then bought an iPod Classic 160. Overall, happy with it, although the video cables/dock were overpriced. I basically keep it as a portable DVR, minus the recording ability. Always nice to have handy every South Park, 60 or 80 movies, a pile of music, many photos, and a goodly amount of emergency recovery software. Just in case I get stuck somewhere with a power outlet and no radio or TV for six straight months. Ya never know!

I take an immense sense of pride in the fact that among my 6 DAP/PMP devices I've had during my lifetime (all but the Diamond Rio still work) none of them has ever been an iPod. For the most part they're Cowon/iAudios and you just can't top the sound quality, output power and battery life. And for the record, after using my dad's iPod I have to say that the ui/controls are more annoying than standard filetree IMHO.

I had a 3G 10GB iPod in 2003 which I bought myself as a graduation present.

Then in 2005 for a job I did my boss bought me a 4G 30GB iPod Photo, which I used CONSTANTLY until it broke because my cat kept pushing it off my desk in 2006. It finally petered out in June 2006.

A few months later I purchased a 4GB 2G iPod Nano, product (RED) or however you type it. I was amazed that I could be okay with just putting specific songs instead of carrying my entire library around.

Now I use an 8GB iPhone exclusively. I might buy a 1GB shuffle for jogging though.

Upgraded to 80 GP 5th generation (minor refresh of 5th generation) for the Games (which proved disappointing, though it got me into videocasts)

I also have a first generation iPod Shuffle somewhere, tried to fit it into a headphone mod, never got it to look good.

@cloudnine: Sluggish interface combined with an unmanageable hierarchy. The click-wheel doesn't always register. With 14,000+ tracks, Artist view is useless. Additionally, hierarchy problems make Coverflow pretty useless too. On top of that, podcasts don't get put into the Podcast menu even though I download them through iTunes. Videos I download from the internet don't wind up under the Videos menu. Finally, about 25% of the time, the iPod just won't sync.

Did I mention that I hate the feel of the crowned metal top? It's a step backwards from the 5/5.5G, which was really the best iPod.

It's a dud.

It's always interesting to me to hear people say that their iPods are unreliable. Not that I don't believe you, I totally do... it's just that I've had 7 iPods now (if you include the iPhone), and I haven't had a single problem with any of them.

I think it's a "luck of the draw" when it comes to iPods... some people are lucky, like myself, while others have crappy luck :/ I'd be pissed if I paid the premium for the Apple name and my iPod broke.

Original 20g colour, it had died, decided to open it up plugged it back in and it has worked ever since.
80g video, bought after 20g died.
4g ipod nano which I use for running.

I'm on my second one. I had a 20GB Photo for a couple years, then recently decided to upgrade to the new 160GB model. I use it for external storage too because there's no way I have 160GB of music.

I really only listen to audio books and they are on my computer at work and home, my commute to work is short, music distracts me when I work out and I don't go on many long road trips. Neat devices, but I've just never seen a situation where one would be useful for me.

ok here's my history.

2004-2006 iPod mini
2006 (refunded within 6 months due to a defect)- iPod 5G 30GB
2006- iPod nano 8GB RED
2007- iPod shuffle orange
2007- iPod touch 16GB (swapped due to defect for a..)
2008- iPod touch 16GB

So a grand total of..... 6 iPods in total, 3 currently owned. (one for school, one for general, one for long trips)

I used my iPod infreqently enough, mainly in the car, because I have an airport express in my bedroom. With my iPhone, I find that I listen all the time, if only because I remeber it all the time.

@justinpe: you're talking ipod touch,which I admit has nice features - I was thinking the other ipods (nano, shuffle, classic). As to functionality, those ones have barely marginally less, in that they don't sync with Windows Media Player and dictate iTunes.

Anyway they are more expensive because the apple logo.

I have more brains than money - I prefer functionality over ... well, apple style. The only ipod I've had was given to me. I've had a slew of other DAPs (even had a minidisc player) ... currently I've got a sony NWA-a808. (I should have waited 6 months for the NWZ... then I could lose sonic stage).
