First off, "If I'm not trained to know it I don't?" Wondering why you didn't get that promotion you wanted? Cause you aren't willing to move or learn, you have grown stagnant. Which is something Blockbuster did, and is not willing to change and move into a new segment... Maybe this is what they need to bring back their brick and mortar dominance, or maybe this is just too little too late. Best Buy right now dominates the market they are trying to get into, so it won't be easy. Kudos on the effort BlockBuster.

Good segway no?

budabellyx

Back when i worked at RadioShack they tried to do a few partnership stores as a test, to see if they could do something along the lines of what you see up there, but it never worked out.

king_of_fools

I see a bunch of comments w/ people coplaining about teenagers that they have to deal w/ when they go to any sort of store. While I agree that they should at all times be respctful and courteous. What more do you honestly expect from them. They kids at blockbuster are probably making dirt, do you expect them to be jumping w/ joy for the hours they are wasting away so that they can go back to their studio apartment in the projects that they can barely afford? Hell, i work at wal-mart and its like people expect me to know EVERYTHING about the store. Fuck no. If i wasn't trained to know it , I don't know it. I make $8.10 I'm not gonna go out of my way to do shit. damn right I'm miserable at work. And obnoxious customers love to come in and start giving you shit for problems they created. It's wonderful. Really, I don't see why people expect so much when they go to a chain store and are served by teenagers. Training at these places sucks and there is no incentive to learn extra just to be helpful when a customer needs it.

luciusad2004

I admit I had blockbuster online service and had a pretty good value proposition... THEN they got greedy .. AGAIN, took my 2 video game rentals a month that were free away from me and raised the price 3$ ... THEN! they raised the price to $24 for online rentals and unlimited instore exchanges... THEN!!! they raised it again to $35 or whatever it was thats when I said .. GOODBYE! and soooooo glad I did, went to netflix and I'm hoping that VOD Service they have gets extended to Xbox Live so I can DL movies that way for a Monthly Fee vs. purchasing Videos over Live for each one I want to see makes a lot of sense to me. I DONT want to pay per movie, I still want the unlimited $20 a mo service and still be able to watch all of the new DVD releases AND be able to purchase Movies in a Digitial format that I can put up on a Shared Media Center Server to stream to my 360 or something with Windows Media Center Extender on my TV w/o trying to find the dumb dvd and with out DRM but thats not going to happen, hollywood doesn't seem to be watching what happend to the music industry with MP3's. Unforunatally, nobody has figured it out yet, sigh.

8026mn

I'm not really sure if Blockbuster is on the right track, but we'll see. I do hate the fact that they charge the same price for old movies as new ones. I think streamlining checkout to something similar to RedBox would be great.

To all those that say "renting is dead" need to get their heads out of their "Gizmodo" world. I'm all into tech and would definitely have no problem downloading content or getting digital copies, but besides me, 90% of the people I know would have no idea how to do any of that or want to mess with it for that matter. Additionally, "high speed internet", according to most internet providers, is still classified at 128kps and up. Even with the 6MB plan it takes a good while to download a 700mb movie. Plus the quality is never as good when it gets blown up on the big screen.
Believe me, I'm all in favor of what everyone else wants on this site, but in reality, I think places like Blockbuster will be around for a while to accomodate all the rest.

metaluna21

Also just like to point out my local Blockbuster is very heplful, me and my gf wanted to rent out knocked up but it was all gone, so the guy helped us out took us round the store and showed us some other films we ended up getting like 4 other films (40 year old virgin, wedding daze, in her shoes and Oldboy (that last one was for me lol)), they are always like that as well even if its just the one guy!

JBreakwell

I understand what you are saying, but these companies need to take a little more care in their hiring practices. If they are hiring rude punks that are resentful they work a crap job and live in their mom's house and drive her car then they should realize how it will reflect on the company as a whole.

For their new idea to work they would have to work hard to lose their "movies only" image and to incorporate a partnership with another company (Circuit City perhaps). Hiring people with people skills and some basic pc knowledge and at least access to imdb.com would be helpful for movie selection and selling me that new tv.

I don't know that the 7-11/Starbucks idea will work so well but then again...I could be wrong on all counts.

Superchargedgtp

I agree, I don't understand why these companies don't get how to make money. Find a niche and do what you do better (and cheaper) than anyone else.

Look at Netflix: They rent movies. They do it faster, cheaper, and with a greater selection than anyone else. They don't sell candy they don't rent games, and they are not trying to pad their revenue by selling blu-ray players.

Diversification is for investment portfolios and Target/Wal-Mart. I'd rather have a one-purpose shop that served a single need perfectly than another mediocre jack-of-all trades.

Secret Agent Man

Imagine an alliance with Sony, Amazon, Microsoft, or Apple in which people drop in, browse the selection, plug their iPod/USB storage device in a kiosk and zap, a nicely DRMed digital copy that they can plug in to their set-top box/console/AppleTV at home and view. No running out of DVD copies, room for a massive library, no late fees, the old-fashioned "experience" of going to a video store, browsing, and making spontaneous movie-viewing decisions, without having to wait for hours for a download (as the library will be cached on in-house servers).

mikejonas

I really love what they've been doing lately. I go in to rent a fairly new release, and they're out of rental copies, but they have this nice section full of copies -for sale. If I wanted to buy whatever movie I'm renting, well honestly, I'd commit myself... But that's beside the point. I go to blockbuster to freaking rent my movie. Thanks for letting me rant about this here, consumerist--wait, gizmodo?! Sorry.

workingonyourinvoice
