If caught, they can simply outspend the government, who has resources with limits and they have none in a practical sense.

Even though they have huge cash reserves, and there's a special tax to apply on companies to do this, nobody has put it on them yet, even though the government could. This is a company who spent 650 million just to keep Netscape from getting any traction on the desktop of Internet computers by giving away IE, then lying that it was so integrated that they couldn't take it out, even though hacker could.

So just snap out of the shock at anything they do. They have the connections to murder someone and local officials will say it was "a needed purge to society".

Vista a whole new operating system designed to mimic osx is nothing more than a really bad copy microsoft stopped thinking and started copying and still followed the same old crappy file system slow to boot even on a mac. OSX boot times are faster the system needs less ram to run and it is backwards compatible meaning if it runs on mac osx 10.1 it runs on 10.5! updates are far better than complete rewrites
driver issues are not an issue on a mac
You can argue about it being a closed system but it works far better than vista or xp (I have an mcse certification and have been repairing computers for 7 years for businesses consumers and colleges and I recommended they all stay away from vista )

@giislander: I make my living keeping Windows machines up to date and operating. I use Windows to play games. I run my business on Linux and BSD because they are stable, reliable, and the source code is freely available so if anything fails to work "as advertised," I can hire someone to make it work. I don't own a Mac and haven't used one for at least 14 years.

There are 3 Vista machines in the office at $DAY_JOB and I am using one right now. It's good for 3 things *only*: (1) Web browsing, using Firefox; (2) running MS Outlook; and (3) playing World of Warcraft at lunch break. All my serious work here has to be on WinXP because Vista is slow and can't do 85% of the things I need it to do, because MS failed to include backward driver compatability.

I am a Windows professional (albeit not by choice) and I think Vista sucks balls.

I can't say I'd recommend 2008 as a workstation to people who don't enjoy fiddling with computers - it takes work to install sidebar/gadgets, enable the aero interface, shut off the detailed shutdown procedure, etc. However it is really stunning to me that I like Windows 2008 so much - I really hate how slow Vista is no matter how much tweaking I do and patching whereas Windows 2008 is very very snappy. I have no idea why MS doesn't do a WIndows 98SE thing today an just release Windows 2008 workstation edition - they could get it out the door in a month - offer it as a free upgrade to people who got suckered into buying Vista even with SP1.

This could also give them more development time for Windows 7, it could get people like Dell to get clients to buy a new OS and not make Ballmer look like such an egotistical, bullying ignoramous.

I'm running 2008 on ntfs - I don't believe winfs if that is what you are referring to will be available even with WIndows 7.

I can't give you an answer on why it is so fast but I can tell you this - which you can do in vista - give up on indexing - it sucks up resources, it slows down your system, it thrashes your hard drive - great if you don't really use your computer but my computer changes by at least 1 GIG per day with a lot of files in that 1 GIG - which is a lot of indexing.

I've heard there is no DRM crap in Windows 2008 - not sure if that is true but that might certainly account for some performance gaine.

Any app that won't work in Vista probably won't work in 2008 as they share much of the same code. However there are apps that do work in Vista that don't work in 2008 - so far the only one I've found is Halo2 and I have a lot of video apps, productivity apps, antivirus, firewall, hardware, peripherals and games - funny the only thing that doesn't work is a Microsoft application :)

For the Business and Ultimate versions of Windows Vista, downgrading is not a loophole; it is just a straightforward option in the Windows license. I noticed it the last time I installed Windows Vista Home Premium (Microsoft lazily includes terms for multiple versions of Windows Vista).

Does/did your Win 2008 install use the new file system (if it is even out, which I dunno)?

My office is nothing but C# stand alone app developers porting DOS apps into the .NET enviroment. About half of us run Vista, other half XP. Domain/Exchange/SharePoint... pretty much MS Enterprise the whole nine yards.

I ask the question because we have two working theories why Vista's disk I/O and Network I/O suck. One is that MS was aiming for WinFS(?) with Vista, and under time crunch, had to remove that and retain a Disk I/O that was basically a 'backwards' compatible NTFS sub-system that was not optimized (read: gave alot of attention).

The other theory, and why I ask if you are running it on NTFS or not, is that the DRM/30-time-a-second check is what is killing disk, and especially, network I/O. A server OS I would not expect to have the DRM check.

A third theory, which I had to come up since I came up with the first and they came up with the second to out-do me and I just had to remind them subtly whose their boss :-p is a combo of the above two... that WinFS had a different way of checking DRM built into it, so my first theory was correct, in a way, I just needed to modify it ;-)

FWIW, I went straight to Vista Ultimate with all the bells and whistles turned on. Dual 3.2 with 4 gigs, and even am trying the 4 gig flash ReadyBoost. Hardware RAID 0, a Quadro NVS 440 card. In short, it is a pretty powerful box. All three levels of UAC off, defrag religiously.
Any service (like MSSQL) not needed
at the time is kept off (manual).
And EasyCleaner is run on a regular basis to take out unwanted start-up entries (*cough*iTunes/QT/MCE*cough*)

Stability wise, no problems, except with IE (as on XP) and EchoVNC.

Drivers have been some of an issue (my motorola HT 820's won't work {cry}), but my main gripe is it is not 'snappy' w/ programs opening like XP was on the same box with 1 gig of RAM (I took the RAM up not just for Vista, but because of sql server standard 2005, vs 2008 and office ultimate (msdn subscriber)) and, of course, the biggest gripe is the awful network times. Try working with a DOS app (TameDOS'ed) that opens 85 DBF's across the network and you very quickly get frustrated.

But OTOH, whenever I did my XP boxes, I always went straight to My Computer, right mouse clicked it, and headed straight for "Best Performance" and then went back and re-applied the XP theme so it looked like XP, just w/o the eye candy. And I did classic menus.

This time I went for the full 'wow'.
So I can understand the snappiness (or rather non-snappy) issue to an extent. The Disk/Network I/O? No way. I run XP in Virtual 2007 on the same Vista machine and get better network I/O. Go figure.

So, we are all planning on going back to XP with dual boot of Vista.

However, if you are ran 2008 on NTFS with full eye-candy and it was snappy, then it might be worthwhile for us to check out that hack that sprang up before Vista's release that killed the DRM zillion time a second check. *Could* be the culprit.

The only crashes I have now using Vista are caused by nVidia's crapmongous drivers. Even then, after SP1 it only exits the program - Civ IV: BOTS - rather than crashing to a blue screen like it did before.

To be honest, I'm starting to quite like Vista after using it for about six months.

The other thing is I don't need to run multiple operating systems because Vista runs everything I need it do - which I suspect the case for the vast majority of users.

Save for Nvidia drivers (which still cause blue screens, fucking NVLDDMKM), Vista has been absolutely solid. Even on my "on all day" P4 2.6 with 1G, Business has been going for 2 months without a single reboot, and it encodes movies 24 hours a day. My Q6600 gaming PC gets turned off, but Sleep mode allows it to resurrect in seconds, and it deep sleeps so theres no wasted energy (and no doubt this thing burns through the electrical bill).

This is coming from an XP and Leopard user as well.

Im sorry, but Vista is just as capable as all the other OS's, in terms of what you can install on it and what you can use, with the very, very important benefit of DX10 and Games. Im not going to make compromises and use a less-capable OS just because the Internet is filled with agenda pushers.

I didn't use them on the same computer, and perhaps if you put Vista on an old computer you'll have trouble, but any decent computer runs Vista without issue. I don't really have to deal with the file transfer issue, and if you did alot of that, I could see where you would take issue with the OS, but besides that, it is very stable, and keeps itself working very well. Vista has already crushed my max XP uptime.

I work for a Microsoft-partnered IT provider, and ever since I learned about the downgrade rights I've been purchasing all computers with a Vista license, then doing the downgrade to XP. My theory is that, even though I think Vista sucks, you never know what might happen 2 years down the road, especially in a business environment. If some software comes out that requires Vista, you at least own the license.

Naturally, these PC's I've installed count as Vista purchases, although in reality I have yet to see ONE install of Vista in use in any of the dozens of businesses I serve.

Also, an FYI to the users who complained of manufacturers giving them a hard time about downgrades. As I understand it, here's a couple facts about your downgrade rights:

1) Only Applies to Vista Business or Ultimate.
2) If you own one of these products, get your hands on ANY Windows XP CD, and install XP from it. Try the activation, and if it fails call the Microsoft Activation 800 number and tellt hem what you're doing. They should be able to activate for you.

The programs i have to use for building automation are not compatible with it. So yes i wish it worked with them that is not microsofts problem it is the software makers problem.I would never go back to xp on my home computer and i cant stand the cartoonish look of xp only thing i see is a bunch of people set in their ways and dont like change.

BF2, CS:S, TF2, HL2 etc. And I have a q6700, 4 gigs ram, a wd Raptor and 8800's in SLi. Its definately the OS causing games to run like trash. Other than that, I like Vista.

I have a new HP dv2000 that came with vista & a 20" aluminum imac, (the cheaper $1199 model) running Leopard, Ubuntu & XP. Dude vista is not good at all in my own opinion, thank god is a company own machine & i didn't have to pay for it

There's nothing I need Vista for, anyway. I don't need the GUI because I'm running XP in coherence mode, so it mostly looks like OS X when I'm using it.

I don't need DirectX 10 because I don't bother using my computer to play games-- That's what I've got an Xbox 360 for (and I'll be busy enough with GTA IV that I won't care about running crap like Crysis).

The only programs I ever run in Windows are Internet Explorer (to watch videos on demand at Netflix, or for the rare website that ONLY works on IE) and VirtuaGirl HD (which is pretty cool running on my Mac's desktop).

If I want to play Windows games (a rarity) I can always pop over to Boot Camp, but even then I haven't heard of any games that require me to use Vista.

Honestly, there's NOTHING compelling me to use Vista when XP does everything I need.

I'm trying out Vista Ultimate and it's less annoying than I thought it would be, but I suspect that's precisely because I started out with Commodores and have worked my way through Commodore, Apple II, Mac original, CP/M, DOS, Windows for Workgroups, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Mac OS X Tiger and Linux already so I'm willing to go with the flow. I did get rid of most of Vista's candy-ass interface first thing, though.

There are plenty of places (the Laptop Forum on CompuServe being one) where people have posted links to XP drivers that will work on Toshiba computers that were sold with Vista. Needless to say, though, Toshiba will pretty well kiss you goodbye if you dump Vista in favor of XP.

I agree that Vista w/SP1 is a total turd for performance but I have to admit I've tried Windows 2008 server on those same machines and the performance was GREAT. It copied files just as fast as XP - boot up and shutdown was quick. Apps opened MUCH MUCH faster. I could throw on the aero interface and sidebar gadgets and it is SNAPPY. I know WIndows 2008 SP1 shares a LOT of the same code as Vista but it is much much much faster than Vista. So in theory Vista could be fast - but for some reason MS crippled the performance of it.

Don't know where you are shopping, but all the HP & Lenovo machines that I have sold in the past 6 months have had downgrade rights. In the past quarter both sets of media have been included in the box, as the manufacturers got tired of shipping them separately.
