some have said "I could get the same capabilities by buying a Widget 2000 for $3000."

hmmm...reminds me of an extremely geekish friend who rebuilds and mods old WWII shortwave transceivers. he and some like-minded friends get these olive drab military boxes maxxed out and talk to each other halfway around the world and they actually spec out better than the newer shortwave systems because they are constrained to newer power restrictions. they are cool looking antiques and they kick ass. a friend said, 'Why do all that? Why don't you guys just call each other on your cell phones?!?!"

know what im saying?

kipmartin

Or you could get the Fujitsu LifeBook P1620. It doesn't include all the mods added to the EEE but it has noticable improvements in other areas and is still cheaper and around the same weight (2.2lbs).

8.9" touchscreen, 1.2ghz Core 2 Duo, 2GB memory, 32GB SSD, A/B/G/Bluetooth wireless. The only things you'd be missing are the webcam, draft-N wireless, and FM transmitter.

Also, after using an NEC mobilepro for about a year a long time ago, touch screens on a notebook orientation are worse than the EeePC's minuscule touchpad offering.

@liveinvt: Someone correct me if I'm wrong of course, but to the best of my knowledge the flash memory used on regular flash memory cards has a finite number of read/write cycles that can be burned through fairly quickly when using it for an Operating System.

All this to still get carpal tunnel when you type too long on the minuscule keyboard AND can't really see much because it is a 7 inch screen.

For 3200 bucks I could get an Ultraportable full laptop and still watch DVD's.

This whole fad got annoying about 6 months ago. Now it's just firmly placed in Stupidland with a direct train ticket to Moronicville.

sicknick

While I admire all the modding madness going on with the Eee, a little soldering goes a long way in shaving off about 1000 dollars off that price tag. And is it just me, or do you need to open the case of the machine each time you want to or need to change the FM transmitter frequency?

oyumurtaci

why is his VGA and Modem on the wrong sides? Mine is switched to the opposite. Maybe i missed something.

Personally i think this is a little pricey. You could do all this yourself for about $500 including labor hours. But best of luck.

link12245
