I own a Prius and drive it like a normal car. I live in the Hills of CT. Here's my typical mileage:

Warm weather 45 - 46 MPG
Cold Weather 39 - 40 MPG

I consider this to be fine. Much better than my Audi that gets 17.7 MPG but nowhere near what other Prius owners pretend to get.

Still, and this is the really important fact, I drove it 20k mile last year. It saved me $2,000 in gas compared to driving my Audi (no sitting sadly in the garage).

If you live in Kansas/Florida, drive 63 MPH, and only take it out in the summer you get 50+ MPG.

keerock

late to the game here, but gotta get in my two cents.

first of all, because the technology represents a step forward for the environment does not automatically mean it's going to be cheaper in the long run.

for example. a gallon of ethanol (don't get me started about corn and world food prices) contains much less energy than a gallon of gasoline. so it's not more energy efficient. however, it oxygenates the gasoline to make it burn cleaner, therefore reducing greenhouse gas emissions. what you have in the end in a more expensive solution, but are working towards a smaller production of pollutants.

although hybrids may be more expensive or fugly, the long term goal is where the solution lies. use less fuel. or use energy from renewable sources such as ethanol (switchgrass would be a much better resource than corn) or wind or solar.

one day we might all come home and plug our car into the battery pack that is charged by our personal windmill. it would be very expensive, but it would be the socially correct thing. it doesn't save any money, it saves the planet.

for what it's worth.

D.LYTE

"Peak Oil" does not refer to a time when the earth runs out of oil that we are able to access. It refers to a time when we are unable to supply oil at the same rate as the demand for it. China, and several other countries that previously had little to no middle class, now have a rapidly growing middle class. As this occurs the demand is rising sharply. "Peak Oil" is not something we will notice overnight, but will be a gradually worsening situation. Some analysts say it has already begun, and others say we have a few more decades before it will be a huge problem. We could begin to prepare now, or we could just leave the problems to our descendants; much like we are doing with the national debt.

robinandtami

@robinandtami: The future you speak of, without affordable oil, is decades away. Gasoline may well hit $5 a gallon soon, but that's because of Federal Reserve inflation devaluing the currency. In real terms like gold (or hamburgers), the price will remain approximately static until at least after the world's 2.8 trillion barrels of shale oil have been exhausted.

IOW, the furture will get here one day. Eventually, the amount of oil that we are able to get from the earth in a cost effective manner, will not be able to keep up with global demand. That's a fact. Some of us are smart enough to begin adapting now, and some of us just want to remain in denial so we can keep driving our Tahoe's a little longer. Some of us are helping to delay that day, and some of us are helping to rush it. I for one welcome $5 a gallon gas(which we WILL see in the next few years if not next year.) Yes, in the short term it will be very devestating for a lot of people and for the world economy as a whole, but it will also in turn force many stubborn people to change their habits. Things must change before we hit peak oil or a global depression the likes of which has never been seen, will be the result. And just so you know, I used to be one of those people who communted alone in their SUV. Now I drive a Scion. I had to fill up the SUV every other day. It now takes almost $80 to fill it (thank god I only drive it now when I have a genunie need) The Scion costs $40 to fill and I only have to do it once a week. $240 a week in gas vs $40-60. It quite literally pays for itself and then some.

robinandtami

I don't live in a gaited community. I live in an average 3br house, in an average rural neighborhood. If a family does well enough to own two cars; they can probably own three. They may have to drive cars not quite as nice as they are used to, and drive them longer than they usually do. So many people tend to buy the nicest cars they can afford instead, of buying cars they can easily afford. They are too embarrassed to be seen in a Ford Focus (or insert cheap econobox of your choosing.) They want to drive cars at least as nice as what the neighbor has, and they want to replace those cars as soon as they get them paid off. That is the very reason you see so many people communting to work alone in their Tahoe's. It's not smug to hope that some people might give up their "keep up with the Jones" ways and adapt to the reality that is the future, preferably BEFORE we hit peak oil.

robinandtami

I bought my car in 2001. THey are releasing a new version that is two generations newer than my car- same crappy gas mileage - just a little more horse power. It would be great if we could see cars double in gas mileage ever 10 years. Instead it seems they listen to idiots who keep on demanding more horse power. Once you car has 200 HP or so there isn't a lot of need for more HP unless you use your car at work at NASCAR. I don't know where these people live but in ever state I've lived in these angry men in black and white cars pull me over once I start to use too much of my horse power.

boe

@liquidsoapdispenser: You're right, we need to replace fossil fuel power plants with nuclear power as rapidly as possible to make it work. Otherwise, we'd be burning coal to electrolyze the water in the first place, negating the benefit. In a couple decades, we can switch to solar for that, and then (in a few more decades) fusion. As far as the timeline goes, GM will have the Sequel ready in a few years, and a fuel-cell-powered Volt before that.

If you're in southern California, hydrogen is more readily available, but the fact that it isn't everywhere yet is no excuse not to pursue it agressively... it's the right thing to do. This is one of those "We choose to do these things, not because they are easy.." challenges that absolutely MUST be undertaken and accomplished. And the sooner we do it, the sooner we can tell OPEC exactly what to do with themselves.

macserv

@macserv: Is hydrogen right around the bend? I'm not seeing it being online for decades, and only in conjunction with more nuclear power (or ?) as the true energy source, since hydrogen is just a method for cars to store and use energy (basically a super-clean battery). In my opinion, the more ways we can find to increase efficiency while we're waiting for other technologies to mature, the better. Of course, pushing for conservation and having the government come up with a decent energy policy would make sense.

liquidsoapdispenser

@robinandtami: It's exactly that kind of "it works for me so it should work for everybody" kind of attitude that pisses me off. What gated community do you you live in where the average family can have three cars? Nevermind whether you actually do live in an area where that's true, why do you assume it's true for everyone else in the country? What about single parents? What about people who live in large cities? What about people without health insurance? What about people who have a household income less than $50,000? That, by the way, is most of America.

No wonder people think that hybrid drivers are smug - that kind of "let them eat cake" attitude just shows how divorced they are from the reality of most of America.

@arbeck: well I never said anything about 4 kids, but while we're on the topic, what makes you think you have the moral authority to tell anyone how many kids to have? What is this, China? We don't have an overpopulation problem in the US. In fact, we have an underpopulation problem. That's why we've been letting so many immigrants into this country for so long; we need them to grow our population and keep our economy moving. Once again some smug-emitting DINK tells everyone else how to live their life, nevermind that your experience isn't universal.

weatherman

@NCMO: They fail at that too: The manufacturing process of a Toyota hybrid battery requires it to be shipped overseas seven times to various facilities. And that's just the battery. How's that for a carbon footprint?

I'm pissed off at "hybrids" in general. A hybrid is supposed to represent the combination of the BEST of two worlds. Over the last decade, "hybrid" has come to mean an easier-to-implement "half-measure" instead, an intermediary step which solves no problems other than that the CEO's wallet is too thin.

What's really annoying is that the true solutions are right around the bend, but hybrids steal the hype. "Why push for faster development of fuel-cell vehicles and the hydrogen economy? You can get a HYBRID now. Oh, and who wants those expensive solid-state storage devices? You can get a HYBRID today! What? You want a real solution? Awwwww geez, come on, that's HARD!"

To hell with this. It really bothers me that my data is stored on a spinning plate with a moving arm. What is this, the mechanical age? Or that my car and home are powered by burning stuff. Burning! Urrrh... fire make car go! We're still cavemen huddled around fires, only now they're engines and fossil fuel power plants.

I come to Gizmodo looking for the future, and this ain't it. I need a version of Giz where all the half-measures, speed bumps, rehashes, and warmed-over versions of the same old shit is filtered out. I only want to see the truly revolutionary, forward-looking stuff, not Yet Another Windows Mobile Device, and definitely not another frakking hybrid.

My wife and I have no kids, but desired (not needed) a bigger vehicle to haul the dogs around or carry things that just won't fit into a hatchback, so we just waited until one vehicle was paid off and bought an SUV. It just sits in the driveway and only gets driven once a month or so. If you buy less expensive vehicles, you won't need a trade-in. If the average family budgets their finances correctly, plans ahead, and buys vehicles well within their means; they can have 3 vehicles for a 2 driver family. Two high milage commute to work type vehicles and one larger haul the kids and "stuff" type vehicle. The money you save in gas alone by not commuting in the "family bus" would go a LONG way towards paying for an "econobox."

robinandtami

@arbeck: Your final statement is irrelevant, and I don't think you can make a meaningful argument in terms of "need" and family size.

There is undeniably *SOME* need to have children, and in some cases more than two could be of critical importance (for instance, your 3rd child invents clean, unlimited, renewable energy).

For some people it is a moral/religious imperative. Others might find great satisfaction in parenthood, and thus want a larger family. In these cases, you cannot tell someone how many children they "need".

You can say: A smaller family uses less resources than a larger one, or Once life expectancy stabilizes, if each adult couple only had two children, the world's population would stabilize, but none of this is related to 'need' in any quantifiable sense.

ludwigk

@weatherman: I'll agree with you that not everyone can live with an Insight - that's why the 4-door Prius wiped the road with Honda's first to market hybrid - it was basically a mid-size car so it didn't require sacrifice. Something to remember - the current Prius is only slightly smaller than a Camry, so if someone needs a 'bigger' car, that seems more up their alley. Also, given how many people with kids practically live out of their Corolla, I'm pretty sure that the Prius offers more than enough room for most 2 parent, 2 kid households.

passenger volume/cargo volume (cu.ft.)
09 Corolla: 92/12.3
08 Prius: 96.2/14.4
09 Camry: 101.4/14.5

And though I'm sure the new engine is wonderfully efficient for its size, a 50hp jump isn't necessary - I drive a car with a 127hp engine, and I've never had a problem merging on the highway (the common 'safety' excuse for more hp).

SwatLax

@SwatLax: Thing is, most folks don't have enough of a budget to have multiple cars for multiple uses, and a larger car means being able to accommodate families more easily. If you have two kids and you want to take a weekend camping trip, chances are you can't actually fit in a current Prius very easily. Single people who don't have kids often think that everything should be small and highly efficient and scorn those who drive big cars, but when you have a family and/or do anything more than drive to work, you need a bigger car. And a more fuel-efficient bigger car is going to ultimate appeal to more people and do more to reduce pollution than a fleet of EV1's.

weatherman
