"The only people i acknowledge using laptops on the go are people with thinkpads, because to me, it says they know what they are doing and take their business seriously."

LOL, and Mac users are called elitist. Anyway, the ad is funny (and the fake Dell ad is even funnier) and clever. Except for the upside down SuperDrive, which makes them look like they couldn't tell their ass from a walrus. Even though the ad's exaggerated, it's also very fitting. From the minute I knew that there's no Gigabit Ethernet and no FireWire on the Air, I knew I wasn't going to buy one. That said there does seem to be a market for it as it sells quite well. Managers, sales persons or casual home users may not have a need for a lot of hardware interfaces. Hmmm, bloggers might also be potential buyers, as has been mentioned. Probably journalists in general and book authors could use one for the same reasons.

The one point where I disagree with Lenovo though is the "we built things in" in a larger context. Even on a T61(p), there is no decent FireWire support (the MacBook Pro has 1x FireWire 400 and 1x FireWire 800, with up to 8W total power, the T61 has 1x FireWire 400 with no power), no digital video out (MacBook Pro: dual-link DVI), no digital audio in/out. You can of course get some of this with the Advanced Minidock, which is $200+. Since you don't want to carry it around, get one for every workplace (currently 3 frequently visited in my case), so that'll be $600 or more. We don't add stuff on, we add it under.

"then you can get a mac book pro which is smaller than that lenovo"

Well, THAT, of course, is not true.

Jackal-Head

I'm a Mac user of 20 years and I think Apple jumped the shark with the AirBook. Their corps of designers have really inflicted their vision upon the consumer market -- giving us the latest sexy thing we're supposed to want want want but actually is half a computer. It just seems to be a finger-in-the-eye to function, glorifying Apple's artier-than-thou sense of design.

Also, I hate the song that runs on the AirBook ads. And pretty much any song ever featured on an iPod ad. And after my experience with Leopard, I want to string up Mac Guy with the entrails of that insipid referee.

So, good on Lenovo for the parody. From a Mac fanboy.

Owen Good

"I thought I'd try to save everyone from typing"

Macs are overpriced underspec'd poncey toys for people with too much money. Macs are great value for money - you couldn't get the same spec for the same money elsewhere. OSX is great Windows is shit. Windows is great OSX is shit. 2GB is nowhere near enough memory these days. 2GB might not be enough for Vista but Macs run fine with it. OSX copied Vista. Vista copied OSX. Some boring shit about the finer points of Intel processor technology that's the equivalent of showing everyone how big your willy is except nobody is interested whatever. OSX is shit and Windows is shit; I run Ubuntu blah blah blah. I hate Steve Jobs he eats babies. Bill Gates eats the babies and their mothers. I run Cock-Rot Linux and it's the best in the world and I don't know why everyone uses Ubuntu when you can do everything using Vi and the terminal feature of my obscure mobile phone (which nobody ever rings 'cause I've got no friends). Some other boring comment about processors from someone who wants to show the world that his willy is bigger than the other processor posters (okay, one person read the whole post). Apple hardware is overpriced I hate anyone with an iPhone. Actually BSD is much better than Linux or Windows or OSX, that's why such a large percentage of people have it installed on their home machines. Doh, didn't you know that OSX is Unix and runs BSD. Actually it's not Unix 'cause Apple won't pay for the certification. Yes it is. No it's not. Fanboi something. Don't you know the whole fan-boy thing is old and so juvenille, just like your spelling. I still use a Lisa and it does everything I need it to. I use a Commodore 64 with a hard-drive and it's better than the Lisa. I don't know what I'm talking about and haven't read the article but I'm going to chip in with something irrelevant and wrong anyway. OSX sucks. OSX rocks. Bootcamp. DRM. iTunes. Steve Jobs is on first name terms with Satan. Bill Gates is Satan. I've got an iPhone and I love it. It really pisses me off that Apple has to put i in front of everything. Something about PPC versus Intel. Something completely without evidence comparing Apples and Oranges (pun intentional) proving PPC is and always will be better than x86. Something completely without evidence comparing Apples and Oranges proving x86 is and always will be better than PPC. GPL. Google. Linux. QNX. My Dad's harder than your Dad. My Nan's harder than your nan. Something anti-American. Angry riposte proving anti-American point. Thoughtful welll thought out riposte clearly disproving anti-American point that nobody will ever read because there's so much uninformed chaff above it.

marm0lade

@kickace: I worked 13 years in advertising agencies and the reason you won't see this on the air is two-fold: 1.) these kinds of things really shine virally (youtube, emails, etc.) and this method of distribution bypasses many legal hurdles. 2.) because the pun of the spot is based on a successful campaign and association with Apple, consumers are likely to initially perceive the spot as an Apple spot anyway and tune-out from the message. This results in Lenovo ad-dollars creating awareness of Apple--NOT good. Keep in mind that parodies are fun but they almost always benefit the original advertiser, not to mention the fact that clients generally hate being perceived as a follower in marketing strategy.

chonnes

I'm a mac fanboy, but folks that don't get the X300 looks have never worked in the upper echelon of the business world. The Thinkpad (with it's distinctive matte black finish and roll-off/overlapp) is instantly recognized in finance and consulting worlds and lets everyone know you're all business. You'd be laughed out of the room with a Mac, and thought a cheapskate or an amateur with a Dell or HP. It's second only to the HP 12C calculator as an exec badge of honor. Lenovo would be idiotic to diverge from that look, as it is essentially all they paid for when they bought IBMs PC business.

ohio

I love how this thread brought back all the obvious fanboys on both sides, I thought this argument died a couple of months ago. I personally like the thinkpad look, looks professional, but I'll admit the Air does look better, and it does have a market.

@brtbs:
Yes I was about to bring that up, how Apple does the same thing too. It's marketing/humor, it's supposed to be exaggerated.

All you folks saying the MBA is a lightweight travel notebook and doesn't need the drive and all those ports, you do realize the X300 has all those and is just as lightweight as the MBA (weight ranges from 7% less to 10% more depending on config)?

Each feature you leave out reduces the potential market of the device. Aesthetics aside, this makes the MBA market is a subset of the X300 market. If you want a lightweight travel notebook without lots of ports, either will work just fine. If you want a lightweight travel notebook with those additional features, the MBA isn't a viable option.

Solandri

I was really, really looking forward to the MBA. I thought it would be the second coming of the 12" PB. Instead, they gave us a crap lo-res notebook that's too large to be an ultraportable but too underpowered to be a proper workhorse.

An extra inch (or even two!) wouldn't have killed ya, Apple. Seriously.

JustThisGuy

There's a very good reason the thinkpad design hasn't changed in 20 years, because it was almost flawless to begin with.... decent keyboards, rugged and rock-solid reliability.

The only people i acknowledge using laptops on the go are people with thinkpads, because to me, it says they know what they are doing and take their business seriously.

Incidently I own a thinkpad x60s, never crashed, never needed reformatting, fast, light and 7hr battery life AND it's actually compatible with presentation equipment and other computers wherever you take it....

liverpool-dr

As far as the X300 goes ... jeez ... have any of you applets ever done any corporate/graphic/or serious spreadsheet work? Maybe even worked with a database? Or is it all about iLife and garageband? Don't get me wrong ... I'm kinda jealous of that lifestyle. I need a computer which works with me ... and the mb pro does it better, IMHO, than any other. I think it's really funny and brillant parody. I own a MacBook Air
and love it. For those who think it's about status, they are wrong.
It is about portability.

@kickace: I'm wondering if they'd even get away with using an Apple-branded machine in their parody ad, or if they could even parody the whole advertisement in this country. Sure, there's lots of stupid parody comedies, but this is not nearly as over-the-top as those are in terms of resemblance.

Kaiser-Machead's Chips Ahoy!

Funny stuff. And no different than a Mac ad when it comes to exaggerating its competitors foibles. I was actually fairly impressed with the Air after using one in person, and I'm no Mac fanboy. But it's not exactly the most rugged machine and aimed at totally different markets (the more image-conscious/Starbucks crowd v/s the no-nonsense/business crowd.)

On the Thinkpad design, I actually like the fact that the Thinkpad hasn't changed its more rugged look for many years now. That's part of its style and what makes it so readily identifiable (just like the big Apple logo on Macs.) If it were constantly changing styles it would have cachet no better than the average Dell or HP notebook. It's hard to go wrong with basic black (still my favorite color on Macbooks as well) and their keyboard/trackpoint style will never die for a reason - it's the best.

Ron-Mexico

While the X300 is not the perfect laptop (I would prefer it have a faster processor), it does beat out the MBA in a lot of categories (even looks in my opinion, which is always subjective).

One thing people always fail to mention, though, is that the X300 has a higher res 13" screen. I think it's the only WXGA+ 13" laptop out there. Hopefully more machines will be following suit (m1330, for example). The MBA probably won't, since Apple is notorious for being conservative with their screen resolutions.

fuzzycuffs

Ya know, I'm slightly frustrated with all the "Ewww, it's ugly! Not like my Air!" talk. Is it me, or do people not realize the taste is absolutely relative. While I do like how the Air and other Apple products (iPhone) look, brushed aluminum is not the be all, end all of materials. Personally, I have my iPhone wrapped in a black plastic rigid cover (very thinkpad'esque) because the thought of scratching that bare aluminum case gives me fits. If I owned an Air, I would feel the same. I'd be forever paranoid that I was going to scratch that beautiful surface. Rubberized black plastic does have it's advantages after all. Also, I don't know if I like Silver, as Subjective as that is. Do you honestly expect us to accept "I feel the thinkpad is ugly" as a mature argument?

newgalactic

People have to understand that LED backlit screens are not cheap the MBA must be the cheapest machine that has one. If your aldeady a mac user the only thing you might miss is a ethernet port the rest is just in the way, they do everything wirelessly already

snitch29

Do you think that Lenovo ever stops to think that maybe they're just re-doing the same thing with the X300 and the Air is the future?

SERIOUS QUESTION: How long will it be before we are no longer using cords, CD's, etc...?

Bluetooth and wireless USB make cords obsolete, and a solid state card or USB drive can hold more than a CD, DVD, or even Blu-Ray disk (yes, I know a 50 GB thumb drive is REALLY expensive compared to a Blu-Ray disk, but it won't always be).

JoeKing

@boe: The Air has mini DVI out and comes with the (tiny) cables to go to full sized DVI, or VGA. I think this is a fair compromise to having the large port directly on the machine taking up space and not using it 99% of the time, since you need to make design concessions to that large port.

The optical drive in the x300 is an impressive technical feat, but as that video demonstrates, that laptop is still a lot larger than the Air.

The rest of those USB cables were just kind of dumb. If you need all that stuff, you're not on the go anyways, or you have the wrong laptop.

ludwigk

It is funny how the bulk of comments against the X300 are about how ugly it is. Maybe it's just me but I don't particularly care how my laptop looks. Function, people, function. And yes...I manage to walk around with my Latitude D830 with only one hand and somehow manage to not cry about it. And like i64x said, some of you might be surprised to find how frequently a laptop gets plugged into a wired network.

As to Dearhaw and his/her point as to how well the MBA is selling in the Apple Store as compared to the X300. Gee...you're right. I'll bet not many X300s get sold at the Apple Store at all! But then I ask you this...how many MBAs are selling on Lenovo's site? Let's all go take a look, shall we?

Thoth74

I'm also pleased because you chose an American company to stimulate. Though, ideally it would be nice to invest in a company that's based in AND manufacturers in the US, but that may be asking a bit too much (you're probably not in the market for steel folding chairs or a tractor).

The tangle of wires was ridiculous. The same thing could have been done without half of that mess. But seriously, who doesn't use a DVD drive? Hello, movies? Yes, I have movies backed up that I transfer over to my laptop. But that solution has serious limitations. It means that I had to take the time prior to my trip to conduct the transfer, and that I have storage space available for movies. DVD's, for all the talk of an end of physical media, are still remarkably versatile. They take moments to load, are available at your local blockbuster, and don't add too much to your backpack size. Also, I still load most of my purchased software via DVD. Yes, freeware and patches are loaded via the net, but CS3, Office, OS's, these all require a DVD drive (in my non-cutting edge world). The lack of a DVD drive is a serious limitation for me, sorry Air.

newgalactic

This ad is GREAT! It really characterizes how by being a "jack-of-all-trades" computer you become a boring box, and how the MacBook Air is such a simple solution. Try to please everyone and nobody will ever be passionate about your product. Honestly, are there any Lenovo-heads out there like there are Mac-heads? Apple hit it right on the nose by offering premium power/connectivity (MacBook Pros), great price/performance (MacBooks) and supreme portability with the MacBook Air. It's funny how those that don't "get-it" are the first to "knock-it"

chonnes
