Bosskev, I agree with you. For me, I see this as fitting on Gawker.com. You come to Gizmodo with a cherry mood thinking "Ah, what new gadget will they tell us about today." Instead we're faced with a news horror story that is just so upsetting that it detracts from the site's mood entirely. I've never felt this way about a Gizmodo post ever before, but this post belongs on another Gawker site in my opinion (and some others.) Punishment for crimes dont add up in Austria. So no matter what you do, you will only get the highest single punishment. (for example : You rape and kill someone -> 20 years and not 20 years for murder and 15 years for rape)

And normally this works out pretty well.

But there are crimes like this which are just too worse. And then there comes something called "Security Confinment" into play.

Which basically says that if the crimes commited are so severe that the criminal is deemed a danger to the public, he can be imprisoned indefinitley without a chance for parole.

Looking at past crimes where this was invoked, this crime will be one of those.

Not that it matters much since he is 73 years old ... so even after the 15 years for rape, confinement, and so on he will be 88 years old ... and probably dead.

And for those crying for the death penalty: Let him rot in a 3x4m prison cell, beatenup by fellow inmates, shunned by anyone who knew him, making his live a living hell ... and dont end the misery after 5 years or so ...

Plus : we dont have it here anymore since 60 years or so ...

Funny, Buran, you are actually saying some of the very words I have thought to myself when reading previous stories. It's true; when I've read stories where people started to whine about what they felt were poorly-chosen topics, I'd say to myself, "Why the hell don't they just not read the story and move on?" Yeah, I've thought it, I get it. But with this story, a little cliché light bulb has flicked on over my head, and that's why I spoke up.

I have two reasons for my sudden shift in position. First, there is a line. Perhaps that line is moving and hard to define, but it is there. And I feel, for the first time that I've been following Giz (since Nov. '07), they've crossed it. Not horribly, not dangerously, but enough for me to think "Whoa!", clear my throat, and speak up to suggest we might need to look at purpose here.

I am not saying that this story is "too upsetting" or "too lurid" or "too anything". I read it. It is angering. It is shocking. It needs to be told. And, yes, it even made me think. None of that in itself is bad. And none of that is why I raised the question about appropriateness.

You see, Gizmodo is a merchant. Sure the product isn't tangible, but even in a virtual storefront, there is only so much cyber shelf space. Me? I come for the funky gadgets, the ill-conceived clothing, the über-cool new technology, the PC/Mac flame wars, the Dorothy Parker-esque banter--that's all good. But a story like this--quite appropriate in many other settings--doesn't fit here. Taking the time to research and write it means that a Giz editor isn't spending time finding me those funky gizmos, choosing instead to take a sensationalizing shortcut to win big hits on the view/comment counter. It's lazy. It's easy. And it means one more gadget story gets crowded off Gizmodo's virtual shelf (and there are so many other appropriate outlets).

But there's a second, and more important, reason to object to letting this kind of story take up residence in our little tinkertoy hamlet. It is a lightning rod to bring out the sexist, the racist, the anti-semitic, the homophobic, the foul-mouthed-but-not-in-a-funny-way douchebags that would normally stay hidden in the shadows. While they may not have anything intelligent or witty to say about technology (probably beyond them), they are more than happy to open their vile little mouths to let loose a flood of contemptible commentary, sparked by this kind of subject matter. Anybody seen any evidence of hateful commentary posted in this thread? Yeah, that's my point.

Left unchallenged or unchecked, matters can only get worse. The same dumbasses we see trolling about above are going to feel emboldened enough to start dumping their bile all over other posts, eventually polluting even the cute'n'cuddly stories. But, if Gizmodo would just make the decision to not present such lurid and detestable stories--stories that obviously are completely unrelated in any reasonable way to gizmos'n'gadgets--in the first place, the maggots, not having a catalyst, would tend to go away.

The paragraph that opens my comment is quoted from Gizmodo's very first story, a "Welcome" post, published July 15, 2002. So, show of hands, please, who here thinks a story about incest, rape and torture fits Gizmodo's mission statement?

With our current judiciary he would would probably be punished more for not getting the correct planning permission for the building than the imprisonment, rape and whatever else of his family - our judges are a joke.

However, personally I think they should find some way of keeping him in constant pain until his natural death - that would probably fit the crime.

He should get at least 24 years which is the amount of time he kept this poor, innocent girl/woman in that condition. The woman (I can't believe -- his daughter) must have some sort of mental problem or something to have endured this. Why o why can't Europe make exceptions to their stance on the death penalty. This guy should be taken out of our fragile world. I hate to think he's breathing the same air we value so much. He deserves the absolute worst we could offer or imagine.

As for takashimike, I'm neither French nor Japanese but I don't think what you said is smart. I'm not saying Austrians are any better or worse than anyone else in the world but note something, Hitler, he was neither French nor Japanese. He was Austrian.
