@bandit:
Read the amount of watts used on your pc, your monitor, your scanner anything else related to your pc and write then down.
Add then all together. Maybe something like 1200 watts.
Two ways you can finish this:
Let's say your setup would use 1200 watts for a period of 10 hours. The lady with the electric company can give you the x amount of dollars it would cost in electricity for that time frame. Or you could ask about a 24 hour figure.

Hope I helped ,

I leave my PC, a laptop, on 7x24. The only time it is turned off is if I'm traveling with it. I come and go from the laptop all the time, at all hours, and Windows takes so long to power up I'm not about to shut it down. Plus I use TiVo's Web Video which uses the PC to transcode video, so it needs to be on.

I do have the power saving modes set to power off the display, spin down the drive when not used, etc.

But I bet my PS3 is using FAR more power - I have it running 7x24 on Folding@Home. The only time it isn't is when I'm playing a game, which is frankly not often (too busy and not much of a gamer), or watching Blu-ray (more often).

MegaZone

No hibernate or sleep options?

My PC I sleep after 30, hibernate after 60, bitch when I wake it up and it can't find the network til I reboot it about one out of 10 times (and used to bitch because it would leave my graphics card fans stuck on low, but I upgraded to a newer one with a giant heatsink and heat pipes and no fans.)

My mac laptop I shut the lid on with a full battery to put it to sleep, then open it the next day with a dead battery because sometimes it gets insomnia and keeps burning juice all night.

My work PC is on 24/7/365 and I get pissed if anyone turns it off, because I never know when I'm going to need to remote into it from home. I do have it set to power down what it can though.

Narual

I leave mine on all the time. Here's my tips:

1) Seagate Barracuda ES series hard drives. Rated for server use.

2) Passively cooled motherboard. Gigabyte makes several very good motherboards with passive cooling and solid capacitors.

3) Passively cooled video card. There are a few out there that have OK performance for gaming, decent memory, and are passively cooled. Most of them are using ATI GPU's though.

4) When you absolutely have to use a fan, use a BIG fan. Bigger fans run at lower RPM's and move more air. They will be quieter and last much, much longer, too.

5) As a bonus, I would also recommend a power supply that varies fan speed vs internal case temperature. These will also a) have bigger fans, b) run quieter, and c) last a very long time without wearing out the bearings of either the power supply fan or the case fans. Of course, on-demand cooling such as this also limits dust ingress into the case.

6) Extra bonus. If you *really* care about dust, don't ever put a computer on the floor! I've serviced many of these things and the ones that are the worst are consistently the ones that didn't sit up off the floor. I even cleaned one Dell Poweredge 2500 server that had over an inch of carpet fibers blocking the air vents. Just don't do it and you should be all set for the long haul.

drsmith

So sick of environmentalists man - do you realize that according to satellite data (NASA), the average temp. of the world has dropped .4 degrees Celsius in the last 10 years?

When my old motherboard was failing, I never turned off my computer because 75% of the time it wouldn't turn back on on the first try. Now that I've fixed the problems, I'm still in that mode where I never turn it off. I ought to turn if off when I'm not downloading anything.

I thought I remembered reading that leaving the computer on was better because most failures occur on start up?

Ike_Skelton

Comment on Question of the Day: Leave Your Computer On Or Turn It Off? Reading all these comments just scare me. Unless your computer is actually
doing something (downloading, rendering, whatever), there's no reason or
excuse to leave it on or on sleep. Are just some people not willing to wait
2 minutes more to boot their computer when they get home and save our
environment ? Why do you need your computer to turn on one hour before you
get home ? If you pollute less by not driving a car or something, that
doesn't mean you have a right to counter balance by polluting more with your
computer habits, does it ?
All I read is a bunch of excuses for laziness and convenience. Once again,
if a computer is not doing anything, it should be off, and that's all there
is to it.

I'm not that concerned with being green or conserving energy honestly, but when I switched to all flat panels, enabled speedstep/cool&quiet, hdd spindown, S3 suspend/S4 hibernate where possible, WoL on server, BitsLimited smartstrip to switch off lamp/speaker/peripheral junk when the monitors go to sleep, etc. my power bill dropped $60/mo (no lie). The best part is that everything is fully available at all times except for some minor waiting when something spins/wakes up (about 10 seconds at most)

This was only three machines, folks! (2 desktops and a server) I appreciate people who want to run F@H or SETI 24/7 but when I sat down and looked at it, it really wasn't worth $800/year to me.

This kind of thing is going to become a big deal in datacenters in the next few years too -- Things like VMware's Distributed Power Management are really fast ways to save piles of money, and pretty soon we'll see this kind of thing creeping into our homes too.

John Laur

Since I work from home, I rarely do full shutdowns (only when I'm going to be out for the whole day) but I put them into standby quite often. That stops the fans and I'm pretty sure the drives as well (right?) but eliminates the reboot when you start up again.

I've been wondering how good it is for the computer to leave it on all the time. Would it not wear it out faster?

I never used to do this but due to very large files the Macbook can be on for upwards of 22 hours at times. Mind you the screen shuts off after twenty minutes and remains that way until I click a button, so there must be some power saving involved there.

kylo4
