This clever, quick-witted, tightly scripted adaptation of yet another superhero movie may actually turn into one of the most respected and highest ranked movies in this genre's increasingly impressive collection.

I am not a comic book guy for the most part and had never heard of Iron Man before the previews to this movie. I almost didn't even go see it, but the good reviews by the critics made me decide to give it a chance. I was NOT disappointed. It was fantastic.

My theater wasn't perfect, either. As soon as the credits started rolling, the lights came up and they stopped projecting. Fortunately, being a digital showing, they were able to start it back up where it left off without dealing with rewinding film.

On the subject of credits, I felt pretty bad: there was an 8:00 PM show and a 10:30 show, and they let people in for the 10:30 while the credits from the 8:00 were still rolling.

So a couple of early birds are just getting situated when BAM, potential spoilers. I felt sorry for them. There needs to be, as I think someone from the long-defunct Brunching Shuttlecocks suggested, a website that tells you spoiler-free whether or not to stay through the credits.

When watching the opening scenes of Iron Man, I couldn't help but think of my uber-boss and overlord, Larry Ellison. I know Tony Stark was originally modeled after Howard Hughes, but they must've borrowed some elements from Larry Ellison (the posh cars, the women, the extravagant lifestyles). Hell, they've even got the same facial hair.

Wow! I went to see it at midnight and I highly recommend the movie. Gizmodo, you did a great job of descibing the tech and gadgets in it. My 10yr old son said he didn't blink thorough the whole movie.
The Hulk preview looked lame. Just like the first movie.

@MJDeviant: Right on. I can't speak about Iron Man yet (new theater in town opening I'm waiting to see it at), but I agree with your opinion on the other movies. Blade 1 was brilliant (just watched it again last night). And you can't beat Cristian Bale as Batman: dark, tortured and kinda psycho.

The Hulk movie was piss poor, because it was trying TOO hard to innovate. A genre based story/movie can be innovative without playing with your expectations of the "standard" plot.

Iron Man, wearing what is essentially a suit of armor, is a testament to the potential benefits of technology in the face of what many would consider the detriments of technology. All this on top of being straight up, jizz worthy gadget porn!

The Hulk has tons of great comics from which to draw ideas from. He's one of the most popular superheros in comics. There's plenty one can do. Unfortunately the first movie was so bad it makes it difficult to see that.

The thing I mostly love with superhero movies, at least the ones executed properly, is that all of these special abilities and privileges that they have don't stop them from running into fucked up problems. Look at Peter Parker, having super strength and wacked-out spider capabilities, yet has to scrounge and take shitty jobs to live in a flophouse in the city. Bruce Wayne is a rich playboy that has some of the coolest batcrap at his disposal, but must deal with his demons and the maniacs of Gotham. Superman is practically a god, but must contend with being alone (which reminds me, what the hell is up with Hancock?).

I dunno, there's just something about the genre in general that gets my movie mojo going.

@MJDeviant: I'm really happy you're expressing your opinion as an opinion, and you're welcome to it. The best advice is probably what you've already suggested: stay away if you don't like superhero movies, because they're probably not going to change.

But honestly, thank you for saying "I was bored", "I didn't like this", "I'm hard to please" and so on. Most people would just say "this movie sucked" or something like that. It's refreshing to see someone who can admit that to each, their own. Hopefully if you do find yourself at a superhero movie, the next one rubs you the right way (and hell, Dark Knight is only a few months out!)

I'm a movie person, not a comic book person, and movie-wise I was just bored during the movie. Downey was great, the gadgets which are in the movie VERY briefly are great. I know it has a source material, but come on. I'm hard to please. I really liked Batman Begins, but I've been watching Batman since I was little, so that's a little biased.

As far as being a genre problem with repetitiveness, well, then it's a genre I'm going to start having to stay away from. IMO, the best comic book movies to me are Blade, Batman Begins, Sin City (okay a little bit of a novel there), and Superman was okay. Comic book movies are WAY better then video-game adaptations, but if they keep doing the same thing over and over, I notice and it's not a plus. That includes the new Hulk movie which not only seems cliche but seems cliche AGAIN! Hopefully Norton's is better, but by the look of the trailer, I'm in for another genre experience. And add unbreakable to the comic book movie, I know it's not really, but that was a good superhero movie.

@MJDeviant: It's not formulaic. Those are the structural elements of the genre. Not the "comic book" genre mind you.

Comic books are mostly epic 'hero' stories. The genre that dates back to Homer's Illiad and Odyssey. (Beowulf as well). You might say they form the foundation of Western literature itself.

Just thought I'd throw a historical perspective in there.

Lee's HULK is trash. Iron Man was a great movie. Sure a lot of the superhero movies (especially the first ones in the series) have a lot of common themes or elements. But it can be done well like Iron Man, Spider Man, etc, or horrible like HULK.

Hopefully the new Incredible Hulk movie with Edward Norton is good.

@MJDeviant: Superhero movies are formulaic in a way because the source material is. Comic book heroes usually start their lives through a very rigid Conflict -> Revelation -> Action sort of sequence.

Tony Stark, through a wartime act of kidnapping and espionage, is confronted with the realization that his life's work is destroying the lives of the innocent, and he sets out to make it right.

Bruce Wayne, through a senseless act of criminal violence, is put on the path of vengeance before realizing that revenge is not true justice, and he sets out to clean up Gotham.

Frank Castle, through a terrible act of mafia vengeance, loses his family and is put on the path of violent revenge against their killers. Along the way, he realizes that there are others who could benefit from his brand of vigilante justice.

And so on, and so on. A superhero movie should not be rated on believability or "originality", it should be rated on its faithfulness to the original material, its appeal to the general public (and not just the fans), and its ability to engender the sense of childlike wonder that is ostensibly the point of comic books themselves.

I say Iron Man nailed it.

@fudged71: You know guys like you ruin movies. I really try to put all of my "that would never happen" tendencies aside when watching a movie. Especially a comic book one. And I worry you may be one of those people who finds the most unbelievable part of Superman is that his disguise are his glasses and lack of a hair curl. Hmm, it's not that he's an alien that can't be killed and is uber-strong and can fly, none of that bothers you, the part you can't accept are the minute details. It's a movie! I'm not here to watch reality I'm here to get taken away, the only time you should have such an attitude is with a documentary I believe.

And you went to see "Pink Panther", a dumb kids film, and was upset that it wasn't scientifically accurate? It's a dumb kid comedy not a science textbook. My only complaint was that they got a bit over-the-top with the crashing. There were several accidents where he crashed with/without the suit that would have obviously caused broken bones -- particularly one incident in the lab.

However, it kept the little kids laughing, so I guess that's why the director took it that far.

The nerd inside of me always looks for the scientific inaccuracies in movies. It can be interesting at times (Transformers was fun. Very few, but the ones that were there, I was glad that I spotted them), but it can also be a pain.

I remember being forced to watch the new-ish pink panther movie, and running out of the theater screaming (literally) when a bicycle ran into a hot dog stand, which promptly exploded.

But man did that movie turn better than I thought it would! Aside from being a Gizfest it was also a great movie to Bro-it-up to. Girls just won't understand how its our dream to have half the stuff Stark had in the flick. Leave your gf at home. Great stuff.

i'm with you guys on the underdeveloped, I left the film thinking, yeah, much better then fantastic 4. but the trouble is, batman begins was the first comic film to really provide tangible deep characters that were as well developed as any multi award winning oscar. opening the film with that new dark knight only underscored what an achievement the new film will be. As comic flicks go, it's worth it and i'm sure i'll see it again, but there were many moments I found myself wondering why decisions were made not to develop this character more or illicit anything more from downey jr who's proven in other films like zodiac that he can be far more dynamics.

I assumed, when he's in the cave wearing the wife beater - that the little glowing circle on his chest was to help/protect his heart - is that not the case?

The power source seemed to me like a nod to both major fusion concepts I've heard of.

The large arc-reactor in the plant made me think of a Tokomak (it's definitely torroidal), but "arc-reactor" made me think of the other fusion concept where negative electric fields from all sides hold in protons tightly enough and long enough to maintain fusion. The latter looks like its arcing when they test it. (Maybe it actually does arc--but the goal is to have less of the wasteful and damaging arcing.)

It was 3 GJ/s. Which is 3GW. Which is a shitload of power--like 60 Seville solar thermal plants, or like all the wind turbines in Texas. But then they ruined it by saying that that value and unit implied it would last only 15 minutes. That would be 3/4 GW-hours then, wouldn't it? But I nitpick. The film was a work of art.

Aw shucks, back to the nitpicking: he flies from CA to Afghanistan, and there is no indication that it took less than 2 minutes. Also, that's a lot of energy. Flying and throwing stuff around is one thing, but it was the 15,000 mile flight that pushed my belief my suspension the most regarding the power supply.
