Usually when we have one of these articles you see all of the people complaining about a "new" tax but this time it looks like more people are aware that it isn't a "new" tax, just an attempt to shift the burden of the collecting and reporting of the tax.

Should be interesting to see what happens when NY does go to court over it. I think the "loop hole" they used to get around Quill is just going to mean some changes in the affiliate programs on Amazon.

Correct. Nearly every state that has a sales tax requires this. And, I suspect at least 0.0001% of the population of those states actually does it.

To be fair, businesses generally have to do it since they are audited annually. However, personal purchases are almost never reported, but legally we are supposed to be doing just that.

They don't have anything and they feel that people that have it should share it with everyone else. Then, when they get older and wiser, they have managed to earn more and save more. It is then that the Government starts to take things from you and you realize just how silly it is, so you become a Republican.

I'm all for social programs and such, but the tax system we have now sucks b@77$. Everyone should be taxed the same regardless of the income they make. If they can be smart enough to make it, why penalize them for it?! Corporations get WAY too many breaks, but they do have to pay twice the Witholding tax against their employees.

This whole thing needs a big overhaul, IMO.

If you have a business in the state and your potential customers have an alternative that doesn't charge sales tax, then you are at an unfair disadvantage.

This isn't changing the law to say that you now have to pay sales tax for internet purchases - it's changing the law to say that you still have to pay sales tax, but now it's being collected at the time of purchase.

I don't think it's a Democrat v. Republican issue at all. It's New York government confronting the problem that internet sales are not being reported for taxes. And it's frustrating, but in a way similar to being caught speeding in a place where people speed all the time.

As for being passed by a Republican, I don't doubt this. The liberalness and conservativeness of each party varies by state and region. For example here in WY we have a Democrat governor, but comparatively speeking he's pretty far right compared to NY politicians. Sure, you can ignore the sales tax for out of state purchases box on your NYS tax form, but that is technically breaking the law, and definitely unethical.

When we file taxes in NY, we essentially have a duty to disclose online purchases and make up the sales taxes at that time. This may come as a little bit of a surprise, but it turns out it's really hard to enforce the tax after the fact.

Rather than being a new tax, this, arguably, merely moves the time of taxation from April 15 to the moment of transaction.

(Although it's still unclear to me whether making it a sales tax rather than a user tax is Constitutional. I could see it coming out either way.)
