The stock cord is earthed! The metal stud actually feeds into the earth in the bulky connector bit.

I can confirm this as the surface of my macbook pro carries a small charge if I use the method above.

gizmofo

Comment on My MacBook Cable Replacement Tip at Kevin Kelly's Cool Tools DO NOT DO THIS IN THE PHOTO!!!!!!! The ground is very important. Yes
the mac laptop will work and all seems well. Except when you start to
use a USB hub and then your USB devices do not work properly. It has
caused me headaches, especially USB external hard drives and card
readers.

I actually just repaired a magsafe cable the other day - the typical problem, the outer wrap had frayed and eaten through the jacket. I ended up cutting the white connector housing off VERY carefully with a dremel. I found out later there's a better way to disassemble the thing, but i was sort of in a hurry. soldered new leads directly to the board, and molded a new housing out of hot resin, so now the LED lights the whole body up when it's plugged in.

nutbastard

This is a good option, since Apple does not sell the longer cable separately from the MacBook power supply.

I actually like the cord that comes with the MB power brick since it allows me to extend power to one of the few plugs you find in hotel rooms. Some of the newer rooms have closer plugs now, but it's just nice to have the cable to keep you from hugging the well next to the TV when you need to power your MacBook.

chillywilly

I had to do something like this once... The PSP uses an unpolarized C7 (figure-8) cable that plugs into a brick. I lost my cable so took a PS2 cable (C7 polarized - instead of rounded on both sides like a figure-8 it's flat on one side) and I carved it round wit ha steak knife, and jammed it in lol.

Rabid Penguin

You get a different cable in many countries. For example, the old Canadian (and probably US) cable had no grounding. Neither does the current Japanese, probably. So when I upgraded, I just kept the old cable and give the new 3-prong cable with the old laptops.
