While I feel the blades are extraordinarily expensive, it does provide a very nice shave, and I got the razor for free... Somehow I got put on a mailing list and got it on my 18th birthday a year and some months ago from Gillette.

I pointed this out to my girlfriend in the store and had the same exact question, "Who the hell would use a light-up razor?" I'll stick to my 5-blade fusion, thank you. It's not even one of the electric ones. Just gets me a nice shave, especially since I find myself dry shaving more often than not. (In that scenario, 5 is better than 1 most assuredly)

I learned to shave without a mirror years ago- USAF basic training, 1978, so the braille method works for me just fine. This is a fail.

Best as I can tell there is no difference in the quality of the shave from the 3 to 5-blades, but the 5-blades does seem to get the job done with less strokes--should be pretty obvious why. As for the vibrating or non-vibrating models, I have to say that I like the vibrating models for how easily they clean themselves when rinsed under water. Anyone who has used a 3/4/5-blade razor knows that they trap hair pretty easy and sometimes you have to spend a considerable amount of your shaving time just rinsing the things out. The vibrations seem to help with cleaning (which is what Gillette should be marketing it as), which means I can shave more efficiently.

For someone who shaves as often as I do, the 5-blade vibrating model made sense for me--a few minutes a day adds up to a lot of hours (days) across a lifetime. I do not, however, believe that the Art of Shaving handle, with the light, is necessary. The chrome and rubber certainly look better, and feel better in the hand, and I don't feel the need to hide my shaving supplies like I might with a bright orange razor... but it's NOT necessary. It was, however, a great gesture and a fun "gadget" of a gift from friends who know that I am gadget obsessed.

I bought the 5-blade Fusion initially, after being a 3-blade Mach3 hold out for ever--I couldn't in my mind believe that two mode blades made any different. Once I tried it, I was sold, and some friends brought me back the Art of Shaving handle (that's what the above is, an Art of Shaving product, not a Gillette product) from a New York trip.

It was a gift from some friends who know I shave my head every second day and thought it a good idea. I have to say that I never use the light function (one push of the button turns the razor on, and a second push turns the light on--so you don't need to use it). The only time I have played around with the light was shaving my face the first time I got it, and with light coming from up top of my mirror, the light on the razor was surprisingly useful to illuminate the shadows from my chin. That said, I tried it once and still felt that running my hand over my skin was a better way to discover stubble left behind than a light.

Oh, and for those of you who don't think the five blades or vibrations make a different, I challenge you to try it, but to forget about the marketing hype. The blades really do shave nicely--particularly on a scalp--and the vibrating allows the razor to clean itself quickly under water (best I can tell, that's it's main function, not Gillette's marketing gimmick about micro pulses). I still think a good double sided safety razor will shave better--the blade quality is better--but at 6:00 AM a Friday, when I am shaving my head for the third time in a week, I like the lack of thought it takes to use the Gillette over the "real razor".
