The eagle *already* got shot in the face. It can't eat as a result, which presents a good test case. I'd rather they work on a solution to the problem on the wounded eagle than wait for the next human test subject to present himself for a prosthetic jaw. Of course, if *you're* willing to take a bullet to the face for science, be my guest, but would you rather have the first-generation replacement jaw, as completely untested on anyone but yourself, or the one fine-tuned on every wounded animal they can find and optimized to last longer, fit more comfortably, and work more naturally?

At the end of the day, if testing on animals means that some kid who *does* get his arm blown off in Iraq can get a cybernetic hand instead of a hook, I fail to see the problem.

The point is these are animals, not people. I use the veteran as an example because there are so many who need help with medical issues, and we have had 2 stories that deal with treating animals.

So to you retired Marine vet, is your priority really a Bald Eagle over your bothers in arms? Should we encourage animal prosthetics over people? The idea was to create discussion about priorities. The left wing contingent apparently can't handle a theory that an animal is inferior. The items i mentioned are examples, look it up, as things that are of greater importance than a bird beak.

The eagle in question is alive and well having also been shot by a hunter and has had several new 'beaks' build as the bird matures or wears out the old one.

Check them out online - [niwra.org] - a great group of volunteers doing work on a shoestring budget. You can even sponsor the rehabilitation of one of their many charges. They have hawks, eagles, bears and many others.

Granted, the eagle himself cannot get the insurance, and even if he could, the beak thing would likely be a pre-existing condition, so unless it was, like, open enrollment, or something, that would get kicked for sure; or they might consider it cosmetic or something, and even Medicaid would bounce that; although reconstructive surgery IS covered, so that might make a difference; and if the eagle wanted, like, birdy breast implants that might fall under gender reassignment (unless it's already a girl) which may be covered under mental health, although there's a lower cap on lifetime expenses covered for that; so as I said, it's not so simple over there.

And they taste more like yak than chicken, actually.

Oil companies generally make LESS THAN TEN PERCENT profit, and that's well documented. Most of that is reinvested in research and development, which is also well documented. And the taxes oil companies pay to the government are insane. For example, Exxon paid well over $100 BILLION in taxes for 2007. Hmmm... that's money to the government... money to pay for your precious universal healthcare and other handouts.

That price you pay at the pump? Your homework assignment is to find out what percentage of that goes to your local, state and federal governments. You will be astonished.
