First of all, electric violins DO NOT get their sound quality from their shape, that only is true for acoustic instruments. So her modding does not change the sound of the violin whatsoever. I was at the Abney Park concert at Maker Faire, and can vouch for the fact that it sounded wonderful.

Secondly, it's obvious that you didn't talk to Molly or ask her about how she created the violin, since she did not actually add the fifth string. All I did was have a thirty-second conversation with her at Maker Faire and I knew that much.

Also, the valves that light up according to how the violin's played? They look gorgeous.

A lot of electric violins come with 5 strings (the extra being a low C). What was added were the five tubes (with electronics by Phil R) that light up when the violin is played and some cloth insulated wires. The tubes will light up different colors, dependent on the note and octave. Also, check Porkshank's comment in the MakeBlog entry about it, as it has some good details about the design.

I have the SV-120k myself, and well, while it's awesome for an electric violin, it still needs a hell of a lot of depth before it can be compared to the texture of a real violin. I usually hook up a good Equaliser to fiddle around with its output, which helps to no end..
Cables - haha! :) If I bought Monster cables or brand cables every time I tore my violin cables, I'd be completely broke by now.

I wouldn't expect all that much of a hot mess on the staff as a result since - if you were composing for this beast - you would either switch from treble to viola clef when dipping down to the lower register, or use a double staff, like piano notation, to accommodate the extended range.
