I just showed the video to a friend whose comment was, "I wonder if that's a video from the demolition my company just did..." After a quick google search, we found that it in fact was.

The search also yielded information about why the demolition was done this wway. They broke it into three sections and weakened the structure so tthat gravity would pull it away from the concrete launch pad and the construction that is currently happening nearby on the SpaceX program. Here's a link:

I not surprised so much as I am dumbfounded by the number of people that will buy into certain claims. Claims made by anonymous individuals who cite nothing, and have no real expertise on the matter being discussed, but base their assertions on subjective materials and their own tainted personal agendas. As for Wikipedia I hope schools don't let students cite that stuff, because I know a few people who make falsifying wiki articles a personal hobby.

WTFFTW

This goes for all those 9-11 conspiracy theorists too. Then to claim they can make the definitive judgment about something based solely on a relatively poor quality video taken from a distance. But that's just semantic navel-gazing. If one were to ask "What was the launch complex used for?" the answer "To launch the largest expendable rockets the US had" would be absolutely correct. When it was being used, the Titan IV was the largest around, because the Saturn V didn't exist any more, and as soon as something better came along in 2005 they stopped using it.

Does anyone remember a television commercial years ago, where a demolition crew is imploding a building? The onlookers "ooh" and "aah" and clap. Then the crew chief turns the detonator knob again and another building comes down. Then another, and another. He smiles and says "Well, we had some left over explosives. People love this stuff."

I don't remember what the commercial was for - the message was something like "just because you can, doesn't mean you should..." or something, and I haven't seen it since 9/11 (and I can speculate as to why).

Help us, Gizmodians, you're our only hope - what was this commercial that this story brings to mind?

ps61318

The exposed elevators didn't work all the time and it was good exercise walking up and down all those steps to work. There is a tremendous amount of steel there (6500 tons) and even in the 90's it was rusted from all that salt air.

It is huge (265' tall) and there was a great view of the sunrise from the top of it in the morning. Of course in the middle of the summer you'd have to swat all the bugs off you and leave the structure every afternoon when the thunderstorms came thru.

@Bob_of_Mars: Wow, you sure come off as an ass with that comment. Kudos.

There were two detonations, two "booms". The sound was from two detonations, not the structure hitting the ground.

I would wager that the audio was NOT shifted in the video. If the first "boom" was from the tower hitting the ground, as you say, and you estimate the distance by the (speed of) sound, the camera would have been about 850 meters from the tower. The camera is obviously much further away.

There was actually a delay of about 4.8 seconds from flash to us hearing the sound of the explosion. That puts the camera about 1600 meters away. 850 vs 1600 meters? You decide. The safe distance from an implosion using cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (for steel) is much further than concrete explosives.

@qbrad: @phantam: I think it's funny that all the people including people who probably built the thing got together, figured out where to place charges, double checked that, took the time to place the charges, double check the placement, and yet it didn't fall exactly like it was supposed to. I would say this goes to show that even one mistake can throw off a planned demo, which should have been easy as there weren't people working in the thing nearly 24 hours a day, but I am guessing someone will say I'm wrong. You see, this was MEANT to go wrong to disprove people. Just like a few days after Rosie O'Donnell got on TV and said fire has never melted steel(don't tell that to blacksmiths), a tanker carrying gas "crashed" into a steel bridge and melted it. But you see, the genius government we have planned all of this to disprove Rosie.

Git Em SteveDave is a poor substitute for LindsayJoy

@alpayerturkmen: I'd forget about the cost... demolition is used in order to bring a structure down quickly and safely. If you had a bunch of hippies, sorting the materials into recycling boxes the process would never end, and lots of greensters would get hurt.

gelatinous

@alpayerturkmen: Yes. Cuz disassembling a building tall enough to have it's own weather system in the top most reaches is just like sorting pop cans. The idea is to blow it to pieces then sort them out there. They "may" be recycled but there places setup to recycle pieces of metal as big as buildings are rather far and few between.

TheCyberBob
