I think this commercial is pretty good. I've had sprint for over 6 years. I loved Sprint back then, as they had really cute phones. I'm happy they are going to be getting more cool stuff. I also used to like Samsung but my last samsung phone (blade) sucked big time.

Sorry but the iphone is too expensive for me. My friend has an iphone and she said it freezes on her and she can't even turn the thing off... just has to let it sit until it unfreezes itself. I was going to suggest she remove the battery and then i remembered you can't! Plus she couldn't even purchase insurance?!?!

That's crazy! Hopefully you can with this phone? I'm rather accident prone with my phones.

kiwibelle

Sprint was offered the contract for the iPhone FIRST but then CEO Gary Forsee turned it down. Not only was this a HUGE amount of egg on Sprint's face, but they've had iPhone envy ever since (I got good inside info here- Forsee basically said "We can make our own!" you should have heard the groans going around the board room!!!)

Just one of the many reasons he is no longer CEO, but a really big reason.

I agree with other posters- they should save the money and invest in some SERIOUS customer service training.

Besides, didn't they just lay off a couple of thousand people a few months back? Do they really need to be wasting money on this cr4ppy "iPhone Killer" wannabe.

Some SERIOUS iPhone envy going on at Sprint.

artdude102

Anyone who bought the ipod-phone for $600 dollars is a fool. Steve Jobs raped a lot of you folks, why release a device (for that much) and limit it? For those of you getting wet for the 3G ipod-phone I have news for you. The device will be 3G-Edge not 3G HSDPA which means it will be 10 times slower than Rev-A.

Within 5 months the Instinct will be running on Rev-B which has an average data rate of 9.3Mbps down, via the 5MHz spectrum. Then later Sprint will roll out wimax, ATT chose to go with LTE which will not be tested for at least another 2 years.

For those of you touting wifi, wifi is not needed on an Rev-A device, not to mention wifi has it's limitations as well. It is only as fast as the connection it is connected to. I found that at every airport I have been to the wifi network was extremely sluggish (too much traffic), my Rev-A connection was averaging 1000+KBPS down and 400+ up.

peerless4u

For the rest of the commercials click the link below. It is quite funny how the iphone can't even preform some of these simple features Sprint has had for quite some time (TV, Sprint Music Store, Video Recording, the ability to send video) These are simple things that I would expect a phone that cost up to $499 to be able to do for me, especially since it has the almighty Itunes, if there is a song I hear on the go I want to be able to download it anywhere, not only where I have a WI-fi connection (maybe we could use the app from [www.wmwifirouter.com] on the Mogul aka 6800 so the Iphone can connect to a 3g service and download music anywhere LMAO). Don't get me wrong I love the Iphones interface and all, but lets pick up the simple things this phone should be able to do, really.
P.S. the rest of the commercials [nowisgood.com]

ibdah23

This just confirms my impression, that Safari rendering the page takes more time than the actual download of the page.
Also triangulation with WiFi enabled (!) usually pins me down within 10 meters here in Cologne.

smartmarc

Actually this is quite normal for a product like this. Don't knock the product until you try it people. And this is quite a smart way of advertising it. 100 million is not that much in the grand scheme of it. The average simple commercial costs at least 250,000 dollars just to produce. This is a worldwide campaign.

mustangjosh1985

the iphone running safari def looks like the url went through a redirect before loading. also, EDGE network might not be fast, but I get great speeds when i'm hooked into wifi, which happens to be all over my town, including home, office, and every coffee shop downtown.

also, they totally copped the album-cover mirrored reflection view that apple designed into itunes/ipod/ichat, etc.... not sure that putting your product inside a distinctly "apple" looking environment is the best backdrop.

also, also, the two phones could be in entirely different locations with access to different bandwidth signals and then "photoshopped" to look like it's happening in real time in post-production. even the appearance of that kind of trickery makes me question the credibility of this ad.

was a sprint custy for 8 years, recently switched and got my 16g iphone. love it. the 3g will be great for a different group of potential buyers, i'm sticking with my 16G for at least the next 5 years. it's just that good. haters can suck it.

The Neoskeptic

Although my opinion may be shunned upon because I've worked for a call center that contracted out to Sprint before but 90% of the calls I received while I worked there were from people who decided to play on the internet when they had no internet plan and knew it, decided to talk on the phone an extra 2000 minutes versus their plans limits, and people calling up just to complain and get credits for not paying their bill and getting pissed that their phone was shut off because Sprint doesn't want you to see a $2,000 phone bill like AT&T does, which in my case I'd rather my phone get shut off at the $125/$250 limit. By the way if you have great credit you don't have a cap limit because they feel your responsible enough to handle a small cell phone bill.

So you can harp on Sprint all you want but I've used their services for about 7 years now and rarely have problems with them. I'll admit the occasional dropped call and once I got a new phone it had the internet turned on when I had no internet plan and I got that corrected and fixed through customer service after about the 2nd or 3rd call the next day.

So I guess what I'm saying is all customer service isn't perfect. Everyone has different horror stories for each provider.

I recommend you test the waters and see if it's a good fit for you, and finally stop trying to scam customer service agents. I didn't mind giving credits to legit people with legit problems but telling me a fake story about your father dying and you needed to get out one last phone call to him isn't going to cut it to get your phone turned back on.

I know I'm totally off subject but reverting back I still like the iPhone better then the instinct any day of the week.

addiktion

@joshman:
Comment on Sprint Spending $100 Million to Kick iPhone in the Nuts (iPhone Wearing Cup) You're absolutely right, Josh. That's the number one rule of product
comparisons: don't mention your competitor by name. That's why you
always hear, "versus the leading brand," in ads. Even in the Mac vs.
PC ads it's never Mac vs. Windows or Mac vs. Dell, it's Mac vs. the
competition.
The idea is that by mentioning the name of your competitor you're also
marketing the competing product; any publicity is good publicity. The
only marketing campaign I've seen that effectively mentions a
competing product is the Pepsi challenge, but even then Coke wasn't
always mentioned by name.

3G, Apple, Sprint, Instinct, iPhone .... what I want to know ... how is it that a soldier in a firefight in backwater third world Afghanistan can accidentally call around to the other side of the world on his cell phone and out here in the Great Basin of the fracking United States of America, when we get 'service' its about as spotty as CB radios. That's what I'd like to know. The most advanced nation in the world and the coverage map out here looks like puddles drying up on hot pavement.

@Kaiser-Machead: Let me point out I case of late on how much Apple hates open source, one word "Psystar".
MS makes software to make software for MS. Just cuz they wont give up their code on how they do some things (like Apples and open book..yeah rite), that and they offer WinMo for other portable devices. I think MS does a rather good job of making itself, it software and compatible hardware available. Look don't get me wrong, I think all big corps have thier evil ways. I just think Java is a little more widly excepted as a mobile platform then OSX. On my WinMo 6700, I can choose a different camera program if I don't like the one it comes with, i can choose a different web browser, I can make it mine. Not what I'm told I should want.

"I don't understand why people are saying the Instict will lose to the iPhone when its not even out yet, and has not had a year of on the market development, but I guess you wouldn't be doing your job of filling the internet with uselessness otherwise."

Interesting point. But it is also why the iPhone is poised to do better. What other phones get significant upgrades after being released, with a new version being backwards compatible? After a year on the market, it will be old and if it sold well they may release a instinct-2 (the Killer Instinct) or it will be replaced with a new line altogether.

This is the major difference between the iPhones "mobile computing" platform and just a phone. (a year old iPhone still gets the SDK update, and I suspect they will support it for 3-5 years) The instinct is obviously marketed to someone who just wants a "cool" phone. Some people will buy it, but its not revolutionary, so it will change nothing in the market.

Its the new iPhone Killer that will be as successful as the iPod Killers were.

Nathan005

Sooooo...same functions as an iPhone (given the 3G iPhone coming out in June), same price as iPhone, coming out same time as iPhone...but smaller and slower than iPhone. The only thing that would make me choose this over iPhone (if I wasn't presently tied to a particular carrier) would be price. I've said it before and I'll say it again--price is the only way these other companies are going to compete with the iPhone. Sell your phone for $200 less and you'll be competitive. If this phone had come out 6-8 months ago, it would have been competitive because it would be up against the non-36 iPhone. But going head to head? No way. I think this phone's main customers will be iPhone envying Sprint customers.

Kiamat

Well i think that if they are going to do a side by side comparison in anything they should have a phone that is atleast close to the same size because screen area is very important and that samsung looks kind of cramped.
And atleast they showed the samsung taking a while to open up the app.
I kind of wouldn't mind being on sprint's network they're doing things to get themselves out of the gutter.
As for this 100M dollars being spent i say they should lower that down to 25M or 10M which is good enough to get a couple thousand customers.
Im not saying millions cuz well no company in that position is going to make a comeback that big without a couple of users being safe about going back.

SneakerFiend

On the other hand, marketing a handset heavily BEFORE a clear competitor/superior product is released sounds like it makes pretty good business sense to me, but I don't have my MBA finished just yet.

And as for the comments about my needing more fiber, I get plenty, and I take pride in treating my customers exceptionally well, I just have little patience for uninformed narrow minded fanboy comments that serve no purpose. Competition is ALWAYS a good thing for consumers, and that is the point that I was making. Look at the first RAZR - not a great phone, but catalyzed an indistry shift towards slimmer handsets, and raised the bar for everyone.

Confession - Every night when I pray to the wireless Gods, I pray that Apple will just pony up and buy Sprint already, since that is probably the only way I will ever get my hands on a CDMA iPhone. Until then, I will take what I can get, even if it is a cheesy marketing campaign and a smaller screen. SOMETHING IS BETTER THAN NOTHING!!!

sprintmgr

@autobehr:

You can't be serious when you say Apple hates Open Source.

I don't think the posts here are a result of people hating Sprint, but rather the idiotic commercials they have generated. If I was a stock holder, I would be outraged. They are literally throwing their money away.

Most people on here have criticized the commercial and the company's decision to produce/run it, and not the phone itself or the company as a whole. What the hell were they thinking? Do they not realize that a new even more hyped iPhone will be releasing at the same time (possibly sooner) than the Instinct? I agree that they need to market this thing and create awareness, but this is not the way to do it. All they have done is reaffirm people's beliefs and made themselves look silly.

Also, How would you feel if you were an uninformed potential iPhone buyer, and you saw this commercial, and then decided to go out and buy an Instinct because it was faster. Only to find out that Apple had come out with a better device that was just as fast (at least comparable), with features that the Instinct will never have. I would feel ripped off and I would probably hate Sprint for tricking me. I think they are digging their own grave here.

Then you go on to rant about how Apple sucks at everything. You said:

"Apple is no innovator in my mind, they just play wait and see. They wait for others to stumble, just for them to revamp the ideas, cover it in white plastic and call it revolutionary."

Who's the hater here????????

I suppose you could say that Sprint is stumbling here with these commercials and the Instinct? Maybe next year we will see an iInstinct from Apple with revamped features covered in white plastic?

justinpe

I have been a Sprint customer for years, primarily because of their unlimited data plans. Unfortunately their customer service stinks, ESPECIALLY when you get switched to their Indian call center where no one can seem to understand a simple English instruction. Fortunately I got the phone numbers of their senior executives from a user group. When I was switched between 5 different people trying to find out why my most recent bill was pro-rated for half a month, I just called the V.P. of Operations. Amazing how fast I got an analyst who knew what she was talking about!

Skeptical_Geezer

@Smith145:My friend and I had went into an AT&T store last sunday in Ann Arbor, Michigan downtown. When the douche bag that worked there wouldn't stop pushing the iPhone on me I had to tell him that I'm not going to pay full price for a phone now when 3g iPhone is coming out soon...he then proceeded to smile and my friend said..."WOW 3 WHOLE GIGABYTES?!" He then looked at her, smiled and said yeah it's amazing how much they pack into a phone...I felt out of the loop watching the two idiots yammer on about 3G in the wrong terms. Also 100MIL is not a lot for marketing considering they are trying to save their asses because Nextel is the retarded red headed step child lingering over them.

Carmen turns 19 in 5 days!!!

Personally I'm glad that Sprint is releasing a handset that is more capable than a year-old product. We all know the pace of obsolescence these days. The least they could do was refresh the looks a bit.

@sprintmgr: If you know even the least about Apple, you should know they are a very secretive company. So too are their marketing efforts, which can be good or bad. Take, for example, the iPhone and the MBA. The iPhone seemed to appear overnight and immediately was huge. So too did the MBA, but it failed to live up to most's expectations, which in turn hurt Apple's offering. It's a risky method, but it's worth it when it strikes. And one other thing, you don't have to worry about looking like a fool when the eggbasket campaign you created a month prior to your product launch loses all credibility.

djkessler3

I like Sprint. I like my Mogul and I like having 3G everywhere I go (the last remaining nearby 1X market just switched to EV-DO! Hooray!). I like the functionality and customization of Windows Mobile. I like paying $50 for services that would cost twice as much on Verizon and AT&T.

I think the Instinct looks crappy, though. I've never really liked Samsung since I had the A900. All form, no function. Sorta like the iPhone!

Although only recently did I try to use roaming minutes and a few text messages and my bill was a bit on the highside but..... and this is a rather large but, The services worked everywhere I needed them to and if I knew I was going to use those services that practically doubled my bill I would have signed up to have them available to use always and it would have been cheaper too.

Okay you dipshit apple/AT&T fangirls, first of all, $100M is not the production cost of the ads, but the cost to plaster them all over the commercial breaks of your favorite shows (probably Hanna Montana - flamers). Second, it is pretty damn impressive that Sprint actually has the cash for these ads, considering the recent downgrade of their credit to "junk," so as a Sprint employee, I will take ANY advertising I can get. Third - the 3G iPhone is not for everyone... oh wait, it isn't even being marketed yet!!! Whether or not El Jobso wants to take over the world is no matter, stop acting like COMMIES and allow the marketplace to decide. The beauty of the american economy is that it doesn't matter which product is better (Edge, iPhone, CDMA, Instinct, Choose your poison), if you can get enough people to buy it, your $99.9 Million investment in advertising airtime and $100,000 for 5 cheesy ads was worth EVERY penny.

sprintmgr

OK, now for my two cents.
People argue that it is not fair to compare the Instinct to the 1yr old iPhone. It has taken Apple this past year to get the iPhone on par with most phones on the market. How many firmware updates did it take to get to this point?
And why compare it to the iPhone, because the iPhone has gained a iconic status, like the Razr did. So manufactures and carriers must compare them. Its not like Sprint could compare the Instinct to the LG Prada, common people would not understand.
The Instinct is one of the few phones who from its beginning was built to be alternative to the iPhone. The Instinct will be Java based lending it to be more open sourced then the iPhone. We all know how much Apple hates the idea of open source. It is a true touch screen phone, not a skinned WinMo, or stylus based input. Sprint even went as far as to get the same visual vm. Sprint is not hiding the fact that it is directly competing with Apple, or even the culture. As many Sprint haters there are out there, I know just as many Apple/at&t haters.
It just drives me nuts that something is not valid till Apple does it, then slapps a silly little name on it. Airport/Wifi, Time Capsule/Wifi Ext Hard Drive, iPod/MP3 player, iSight/webcam. Apple is no innovator in my mind, they just play wait and see. They wait for others to stumble, just for them to revamp the ideas, cover it in white plastic and call it revolutionary. Nobody fults them for that. But in the same way, isn't that what Sprint/Samsung have done? They are looking at what the iPhone lacks and are marketing against that. Lets not forget, this is close to the same kind of marketing Apple did with the iPhone when it came out the whole "can your phone do this" campaign. Touchscreen phones are nothing new, you can go as far back as the PDQ back in 1998 or so. They just did not have a multimillion dollar campaign, culture or exclusivity to sell it.
Granted, the 3G iPhone will be out in June, and the will be the second coming, but now early adopters will be upset that they now have to purchase a new one to be on top of the game. And that's what this is, and that's how Apple likes it. To me the iPhone is loosing it's luster. Tho no other phone will probably gain the same iconic status, we must look past our hate for one company or the other and see that this is a valid attempt to gain market share with a product that could truly compete.
I know I have rambled on here for a bit, and I know I will get flamed one way or another. But we have to look at things from a business and marketing standpoint. Advertisers can no longer use pretty and flashy story typed ads to get things across, they are forced to kick each other in the nuts as they say on here.

autobehr

Something weird is going on there, from what I can tell they are going to www.sprint.com. But on the iPhone it spends some time loading the initial URL, before getting some kind of redirect, and then reloading the page again making the pageload take twice as long as it would otherwise.

I don't see many pages load that slowly over EDGE. It makes me wonder if the sprint.com homepage has been customized a bit...

kgelner

Don't anyone tell Sprint about the iPhone 2.0. I want to see the expression in their CEO's face when the 3G iPhone hits the streets. Its going to be great to see all those millions flushing down the toilet.

The iPhone is the best cell phone not because of Google maps or AT&T's edge network. Its the best cell phone because it is fun and easy to use. The iPhone is by far the best cell phone I have owned and it is going to take much more than a 3G network or GPS to change my mind. And all that is before 3rd party apps come to the iPhone. Once that happens all bets are off.

Good luck Sprint, kiss your money goodbye. I hope flushing your millions away was fun, because that's all you'll get for your ad campaign.

sandrino

I don't think anyone at Samsung or Sprint expects the Instinct to "beat" the iPhone in sales. They are just trying to steal some of the market that the iPhone created.

Also, your post does more to convince people to switch to Sprint than the commercials do. Their cheap plans and coverage are what makes them better than ATT, not their phones.

BTW, you're getting a hell of a deal for a Sprint customer. My buddy has Sprint and he pays $70 per month + taxes and fees for 450 minutes a month and unlimited data.

justinpe

I don't understand why people are saying the Instict will lose to the iPhone when its not even out yet, and has not had a year of on the market development, but I guess you wouldn't be doing your job of filling the internet with uselessness otherwise.

I have Sprint, I pay $32 a month for 500 minutes, unlimited data, unlimited text, unlimited sprint to sprint, unlimited roaming, phone insurance etc.

My phone is the HTC 6800 (Sprint Mogul), I have an app on it which turns it into a router basically so I can connect to Sprint's EVDO Rev. A network using my laptop and connecting to my phone like any wireless access point.

In all, I have been very happy with my phone. It has GPS, EVDO Rev. A, tons of cool apps already without waiting for a dev kit, etc. And I have been happy with Sprint, their service at least here in MI is 100x better than AT&T (who I once had).

So basically, if the Instinct is better than my current phone (which it may suck, I have had bad experience with Samsung in the past).

Then I would probably get it, and so will others. If it doesn't beat the iPhone, oh well. I would love to have a 3G iPhone, but not on AT&T's sad excuse for a network.

I guess I just wish people would wait until the Instinct is out, and even then give it a couple months for any firmware updates (I remember the tons of issues and missing features the iPhone had before a few software releases came through).

THEN, bash it, or praise it.

At least give it a chance instead of looking like a bunch of narrow minded dicks.

VulnoX

This is the right move for Sprint, once you get past the fact that it will not stop Apple.

First, the only thing anyone hears about Sprint is negative. But, if you have a massive advertising campaign on the heels of the WiMax announcements, you are at least letting the world know you are still alive. However, it also shows that Sprint is willing to go toe to toe against the Apple reality distortion field. While they will not be successful in stopping any 3G iPhone sales, they will be successful in planting a seed that the iPhone is not as amazing as everyone says. Once again, it won't stop the sales, but in the interest of competition, it is a good seed to plant, especially from a company that we already wrote off as dead.

Monty

I have no problems with Sprint. I had to call customer service once two years ago and the problem was fixed. My service is cheap. I ALWAYS have a signal. My EVDO tethering is fast. When my phone breaks they replace it either that day in the store or they send a personal carrier within 48 hours to drop off a replacement.
What they need to learn is that people who use Moguls and Blackberrys have a different need than an iPhone user. But everyone insists on trying to steal the iPhone market. Oh well.

Is it that no on this board understands Marketing, or that we are all just Sprint haters so much that we ignore this is a great commercial. Forget the fact that iPhone is coming with 3G...no one outside of these boards understands what the heck 3G is anyway. They see a faster phone and that is all that matters.

Triangulation to GPS...to any regular person that statement is garbage.

And for the price that ANYONE can get with Sprint SERO, there is no service out there that can beat it. I have 1250 anytime minutes, free night and weekend at 7, 50 bonus minutes, free Sprint to Sprint, Free text, Free unlimited internet, all for $49.99 not including the $10 I get off every month for working for a company that gets a deal (almost all companies do). Can AT&T do that? No. Is the iPhone a good looking phone? Yes. Will I give up a decent service at an amazing price for it? Hell no.

Good job Sprint!

"Oh, and to put $100 million into some perspective, that's more money than it would cost to run a 2009 Super Bowl commercial every day for a month."

And who are the editors allowing this to go in. That $3M per 30 second ad is how much it costs to run the ad, not produce it and pay for everything in it. $100M is actually not that bad a number for marketing a new competitor like this.

Smith145
