We have Clearwire in my area. I've looked into it, but didn't like the options. They want you to sign a 2 year contract. If you try to go the "no commitment" route, they jack the price by about $30 per month...so around $80 per month for just the PC Card service, which is unfortunately the only option around here (in NC).

I've noticed that in other areas (like Seattle) they offer plug-in modems that you can connect to a router. This is critical, as having only one access point for broadband is a non-starter for most people. The 2.0Mbps service is around $45, which is in line with most cable offerings.

I'd like to see them lower the price on the PC Card access to be roughly equivalent to the home modem rates, or at least offer a pc card/modem combo price. I understand charging a premium for the mobility as that is what sets them apart technology-wise, but I think in the long-term they need to compete with the land-based networks on price.

I also think the $100 activation fee is a strong deterrent. I'm not a fan of activation fees, period, but I can accept them if a technician needs to make a house call for installation. In Clearwire's case, you set up the whole thing yourself, and I guess pay them $100 for the priviledge of being one of their customers? I know cell phone providers still charge activation fees, but most broadband providers do not.

I'm all for there being more competition in the broadband space, but from what I've seen of Clearwire so far I'm just not convinced they know how to lure customers in and compete with the established players.

Atrahasis

wimax have worked out pretty good in Canada toronto, my wife have been using it, the cool thing is you can plug it into your car outlet and try to receive wimax as well, so you CAN surf the internet when you're moving in the car (as passenger) the only down side is speed varies depending on the location of the tower.

slstsang

So the US is now behind in all things wireless and broadband. And now we have Comcast and Sprint leading the way. WE ARE DOOMED!. Sprint I got rid of and I would ditch Comcast but they got that whole monopoly thing round these parts. Nothing but shady service, customer support anger and crazy high prices coming our way! Didn't these companies finish top three in the worst company of the year award three straight years?
