We paid about $84. But the bill was more like $110. PG&E was doing some promotion where you get a reward for cutting back by a certain amount and we did it. We have three people, four computers and a 2000 sq ft house and our bill covers heat as well, so I think we did pretty good.

The last bill from before the husband and his friend left was about $300. We have made some definite changes.

gtpooh

Gas usually runs me about $20-30 in the summer, but I have gas heat/fireplace so my utilities are about the same price year-round.

majeskyb

I average about $58 during the winter. From Florida so no heat during winter and blast the crap out of the AC during summer. But we do things like use Fans, dry our clothes on a line and rack and are pretty fastidious about not keepings things on. My old Neighbors would rack up a 2/3 higher bill b/c they kept their house frigid during the summer and kept on all the lights and have a ginormous tv.

coolkiwilivin

I cut about $30 - $40 off my power bill when I switched from a giant ATX box to a small Dell desktop as my 24/7 home server.

An added benefit is that its nearly silent, compared with the six-dozen fans blasting away in the old box. The best part? I went from a 1ghz Athlon to a 2ghz Celeron (the p4-ish one).

And I got it on sale from Dell, for $250 including a 15-inch LCD, which I turned around and sold for $100. So the box basically paid for itself in 5 months.

matto

As it stands right now, 69 people voted for $1000+. That means 68 people grow dubes. And you grow dubes in your garage not your basement. In fact, this questioner could have been a smoke screen to calculate the average number of dube growers who visit this website. Is it impossible to think that those who have super disposable incomes are also those who always buy new technology and are interested in it? Just remember, that scruffy guy with ripped jeans and a stained T-shirt who is in line buying three $600 iphones in front of you, he might be a dube grower.

donjumpsuit

I live in Ireland so converting my electricity bill to USD doesn't give an entirely accurate comparison - still, the bills have been somewhere around $250 a month for the past year.

I'd say most of it comes from heaters having been on every night; my Australian boyfriend is always cold! I'm from a bit higher north in Europe so I prefer the rooms cooler rather than toasty. As to appliances, we have two laptops that are on for a few hours on weekdays and the TV(s) get switched off at the wall every night as well.

I used to pay 70 a month pretty regularly, give or take 5 bucks. Then I got to unplugging EVERYTHING when not in use - turning off surge protectors, unplugging the TV/Stereo/Wii when not using it. Not using anything less, mind you, just unplugging when not in use - just to see how much latent power I was wasting.

A lot. I'm down to 30 a month, about 180 kWh. And 60% of my juice comes from green energy. What was nice about this system is that it's now given me the leeway to use the AC and the dishwasher more than I previously would have.

in thailand, april is the hottest month of the year (there's songkran festival to cool off).

electricity bills are about the double of other months.

$385 instead of $200 for me (single house, 4 persons)
$200 instead of $110 for friend in small apartment

modern thai houses are built with materials and designs that trap the heat (even late in the evening, it's still hot between the roof and ceiling). basically they're like ovens. a/c units have to be turned on a lot, and must represent 60 to 70% of electricity bills.

it's a shame because traditional thai houses were designed to let air flow and remain livable with just fans.

nachomaans

4 bedroom house here with 5 people living in it, our electricity bill was over $500 last month. For the same month last year, with slightly MORE electricity used, the bill was about $125 cheaper.

Now we are all gadget junkies here, but we don't keep a lot of things running 24/7 (except for one relatively low power file server, and of course the fridge). Electricity is just really expensive in Hawaii, and with electric water heaters/stoves, it adds up fast.

worthless

@playaj: I haven't yet seen how the LA DWP will handle the net production in electricity. In the winter months the system produced slightly less than we consumed, so I've only seen that end so far. But for the past few weeks the system has been generating about 10 kWh more than we consume each day. Our house is 1900 sq ft, but it's 3 stories, so our roof is pretty small. So the 24 panels cover most of it. The system cost me $24K (not including my $2K federal tax credit). The total system was about $48K, but local rebates covered the other half.

liquidsoapdispenser

$77.82. I've been as low as $60 and as high as $150 due to electric co shennanigans.

Out here, they have something called a "baseline allowance". Basically, sell a certain amount of energy for a low price, but use over that and the price per kWh jumps significantly (about 170% looking at my current bill).

The problem is, the baseline changes (You're allowed more kWh in the winter).

Soooo, when it's winter time, and I'm running the heater electricity. My bill is low (around $90-$100).

It's even lower right now ($77) because winter in San Diego has been rather warm so I haven't even been running the heater.

In the summer, I hardly ever run the AC (I like it hot, it would have to hit 85+ degrees outside), but because of the baseline shifting, my bill remains about the same ($90-$100) despite using less energy.

If I actually do run the AC in the summer time, the bill jumps into the $120-$130 range.

/what's worse is the cost per kWh changes throughout the year as well. So I've got a shifting baseline allowance, and a shifting cost for both the baseline and the regular electric charge.

/thankfully, no gas bill :P

lordargent

@ferris209:

You sir, are correct.

TXU charges me about 0.13 an hour even though I keep my usage down around 650kWhrs. They charge less if you use over 1500kWhrs. So they are actually penalizing people for saving energy. My uncle in Louisiana is still paying only $0.07 a kWhr. Yea, that de-regulation crap has really helped us.

But its ok, I'm only going to be cutting my usage even more. I've gotten into the habit of unplugging my gadgets AND switching off the surge protector they are plugged into. I've got a radiant barrier in the attic and the Solar Screens are just waiting on HOA approval.

SgtBeavis

I'd give anything if regulation would come back to Texas. I never was for deregulation anyways. A-Holes in my state, now instead of having to settle for 5 cents a kilowatt power I get to choose between 14 cents a kilowatt and 16 cents a kilowatt, plus if I need anywork done at all I have to wait a week. Same goes for the phone service. Stupid deregulation.

ferris209

Which is TOO MUCH for someone living alone.

It's more than half the bill I had while living with my mother, in a house almost 4 times as big as my current apartment.

But my old laptop is on 24/7, it is colder here so I have to spend more with hot showers and stuff.
