This is clearly nothing more than a mock up. No lights, no display. Folks this is all about showiness but not substance. It will probably take two or three more quarters to get a working prototype out of Quanta. IF and it is a big IF Dell gets it working they will still be late to the game. Sinclare had a unit like this 20 years ago that used a simple TV.

I used screen calipers to measure the thing using the VGA adapter as a base. This is just a rough estimate but it should be pretty close. Based on the measurements it's approximately 10" wide 7" deep and 1" thick (at the back). The screen is approximately 9" though who knows what the display resolution is. I'd guess something in at least the 1024 range maybe better though it would be getting pretty small to see text at that point.

They should look into ways of making it look more rectangle and less squarish. Too much dead space around the keyboard and lcd. Then the dell logo I find unattractive smack in the middle one of the reasons I don't buy apple laptops but thats just me obviously.

The part I find funny is how they keep throwing around the developing country lines, yet the demand is in the developed world. The sweet spot for mass adoption of electronics is $100-$200, so obviously any company that hits that with a laptop is going to score big.

The keyboard is missing keys and most have been remapped to an alt+key combination. Check out the letter WERT for {}[] and where is the doublequote key?

All I know is that Thinkpad's were built in China, before Lenovo bought the rights to the name and put a different badge on them. They're damn near bullet proof, and they're certainly fool proof, (with the caveat about better fools, etc.)

That said, the contractors that repair the business Dell's on-site wouldn't buy one. They're reputed to be balky, and prone to many known faults, mostly on account of cheap parts. But in this, you get what you pay for.

I own an Eepc 701. I'm willing to bet that the shiny new Dell will not cannibalise Dell's existing Laptop business, and as such will not be a direct competitor, except in size. £200 is OK for a toy, but more than that and you can find better stuff that's been refurbed.

@splig: Can I just say "AMEN!" I was crestfallen when I saw the Air... It is gorgeous, it just doesn't solve any of the real problems. These little guys are where the next blue ocean of growth will come. I think it has blind-sided Apple (and others) and, frankly, may have even surprised Asus. The current model is:

(i)Phone for web at all times ---> Laptop --->+/- Desktop ---> Media Center type setup.

But I think it is going to be:

(i)Phone --> UMPC/Mini for on the go "real" computing ---> Laptop

Apple: Please hear my plea! Make a sub-12" Mac Book to rule them all! I will pay up to $1000 if there are minimal compromises... Please!

this does look like one sweet subnotebook, yet the specs would definitely help to give it the throne of the exponentially growing field of inexpensive laptops. I would say its around 9-10 inches.

I'm currently stuck between buying a M1530 with Intel C2D T8300 2.4ghz, 320 gb hd, 1440x990 res, 4 gb ram, and 256 mb graphics for a mere $1200. Should I buy now or wait till Intel releases the centrino 2's?

Haha developing countries my foot. Just sell them in plain old regular countries at a reasonable price and you will make a fortune. Considering the price of low-end Dell laptops there is no reason at all that some small form factor laptop with a small screen, memory and low storage capacity cannot be at least as cheap if not cheaper.

Asus really seem to have lost the plot on the whole cheap is good thing. Maybe Dell & others can pick up where Asus left off.
