A new company called Ageia has announced that they've created the world's first chip dedicated to physics acceleration. Emblazoned with the clever name "PhysX," the company hopes to release the chip in time for Christmas and is marketing the processing unit both for use in add-on cards and as an integrated solution in next-generation consoles. Adding to the mix of graphical processing units, sound cards and MPEG-decoders, Ageia provides another means for taking the load off your host CPU, and also, another piece of hardware to upgrade every three months just so you can play the next version of Half-Life. Ageia has built a platform for third-parties to begin utilizing the chip, and hopes to have 10 to 15 games using the technology when the it launches.
