If you're looking for some soft light, the Gaffer's Bounce Lamp looks like the way to go. It was designed by Edward Cohen, who the guy who did the lighting for movies such as Spiderman 2 and A Beautiful Mind. The fixture has a nautical theme, and uses the well-known principle of bounce lighting, taking a harsh 20-watt floodlight and turning its light into something a lot less specular and a lot more relaxing.

The $99 lamp includes two differently-shaped sanded plastic reflectors that spread out the light just right. I was a gaffer for a long time, and I can tell you that this is a great way to softly light a room. If you could put 250-watt halogen bulbs in there, you could use a quartet of them to cast a soft glow over your next movie set.
