If you're interested in the early stages of the Empire State Building, you should check out the Reynolds Building in downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Sorta like a prototype. This is a photo from 1929, a few years before the Empire State Building was built.

Yeah, it's a lot shorter and the top "spire" isn't the same, but it still looks just like this. Just, you know, with color.
