Xfinity Customer Service
Xfinity currently has an A- rating on the BBB and has received positive customer reviews from the BBB and other popular review sites like Yelp and Trustpilot. Comcast, Xfinity’s parent company, is currently undergoing a government action lawsuit for allegedly overcharging consumers, charging consumers for unordered products and failing to deliver promotional Visa gift cards in exchange for signing up in the state of Minnesota.*
Here are a few reviews from Xfinity customers:
We pay [$70 per month] for the fastest [Wi-Fi] ONLY and it hardly works. Every day I have to unplug my router to make it work. Even with call outs from technicians, this is still the best they can give me. Also, it has a monopoly in our area. How is that legal? — Randi B. via BBB
My service was interrupted mid-morning and through the cooperation of all the procedures Comcast has in place, the process to repair [the service] was seamless and my service was back online by early afternoon. Throughout the process, everyone was courteous and knowledgeable in their job. The technician was very courteous and personable and double-checked his work to make sure the repair was complete. I was very satisfied with the service. — Rhonda H. via BBB

Spectrum Customer Service
Spectrum currently holds a B+ rating on the BBB. It features lower scores than Xfinity on popular customer reviews sites, such as Yelp and the BBB. The company also has a pending government lawsuit over it allegedly defrauding New Yorkers over internet speeds and performance.*
Learn what some Spectrum customers had to say about their experiences with the company:
I’m experiencing…outages at least once a day. Some last for hours, like the one I’m in now as I type this review. I was in the middle of a call with a customer and my call dropped. Sure enough, I checked my modem and it’s blinking and the router is red. The notification shows it’ll be out for at least 2 hours! It’s beyond ridiculous when your job is on the line and this is the only internet in your area. — Tekayla P. via BBB
I recently added Spectrum Mobile to my existing services and I’m very happy with the service. I don’t have any issues with signal and my data usage is lower than before because my company building has a Spectrum Wi-Fi hotspot so I can use that and not pay for such a big plan. I find it very affordable and can’t tell the difference in their network vs. my previous provider. — L. M. via BBB

Xfinity vs. Spectrum: Verdict
Xfinity and Spectrum are both solid choices for an ISP. We found Comcast Xfinity to be the best overall provider of those we evaluated, offering one of the largest selections of internet speeds, plans, bundling options and well-regarded customer service. If you’re looking for one of the most inclusive and comprehensive internet service providers on the market, look into Xfinity.
We named Charter Spectrum as the best company for high data use, and it’s a great option for those who constantly use the internet. If you play online multiplayer games often, stream a lot of HD video content or work from home, we recommend Spectrum due to its lack of contracts and data limits.

Methodology for Rating Internet Service Providers
Our Advisor team has created a detailed methodology that we use when we rank and research internet service providers. We have analyzed ISPs on their cost, speeds, connection types, additional perks, service availability and more.
Here’s a breakdown of the factors we consider when rating companies. Our top picks score well across all these factors.
Factor |
Weight |
Criteria |
---|---|---|
Starting Price Cost |
15 |
We considered the monthly starting price, most often set for 12 months, each provider offers. The lower the price, the higher the score. |
Broadband Options |
12 |
We reviewed whether the provider is able to offer DSL, satellite, cable and/or fiber-optic connections for the internet. The more connection types a provider is able to supply, the higher the score they receive. |
Additional Benefits |
10 |
Though primarily focused on bundles with TV, streaming and phone services, we also weighed extra perks, such as deals or free equipment. |
Download Speeds |
10 |
Based on advertised download speeds, we ranked companies on their ability to supply ample downloads ranging from 100 Mbps to 500+ Mbps. If the company provides speeds lower than these, they receive a significantly lower score. |
Customer Service |
10 |
We considered whether the company offers customer support 24/7 or only during business hours, as well as if it offers a separate customer tech support line. We also look at customer satisfaction scores across sites like Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau (BBB). |
Technological Accessibility |
15 |
We considered the availability of the company through an online customer portal, a mobile app or an online chat. The more options the provider offers, the higher the score. |
Service Areas |
10 |
We weighed each provider based on how many states it is available in. If the provider offers its services in more states, then it receives a higher score. A provider may also receive a higher score if it is in less states, but it provides excellent services for those in rural areas. |
Reputation |
13 |
We considered the overall reputation a provider has received over time based on BBB scores and the number of years the provider has been in business. |
