You know, I had the same question when I bought the 5S off-contract from Apple last year but the T-Mobile version. I had it "unlocked" from T-Mobile after 40 days of use, but I suspect it would have worked with AT&T out of the box anyway. It would be nice if someone could shed some light on this.
