My only issue with this is I really don't see the value in the stuff MS has that Sony doesn't. I mean, give me Netflix and Hulu Plus, and I'm a happy camper! I don't NEED the other content deals MS has. Read more
I know this article is a few weeks old but i'm basically staring at the Time Warner order screen and saying if i get an HD DVR and HBO plus good internet it's $150+ a month if not more. I can just get do what you did and survive. The key is if my wife can survive...
I have cable, but only the Broadcast Basic package, which means we only get the broadcast stations, and a couple of cable channels. It costs around $25/month. Read more

Seriously, try channel surfing on a weekend morning. It's nothing but children's programming (not cartoons), pundit shows (Meet the Press etc...) and informercials. You're paying for that garbage. Read more
The UI on TiVo actually isn't as bad. I too took about 4 years off from cable. I decided to plug back in and the only way I'm still using it is with TiVo. Sometimes I think I'll cut the cord again, but the serendipity of the live feed of cable is actually kind of fun. Read more
Live sports are the main reason I need cable. I can't watch sports on a computer, and the internet is never completely smooth and skip-free (if I were to hook it up to a TV). I was reminded of this on this past Saturday as I sat down for a day of English Premier League on the HDTV.
You should seriously consider building an HTPC with a tv tuner setup. I have a Windows Media Center setup I built with a Ceton Infinitv 4 card and it's completely changed my relationship with cable altogether. For starters, you don't have to pay to rent a DVR box you hate. You pay about $3 a month for a cablecard… Read more

4 years in, cutting cable was the best thing I ever did for my life. If I want entertainment, I actively have to seek it online via netflicks, various legal streaming sites, 'other' sources, etc. But I have to manually go out there, perhaps wait awhlie and then I get to watch something. Usually I have a nice… Read more
Can't we all just agree that Beats are for teeny-boppers??
Great article. I found myself in a very similar situation. I cancelled cable in 2010, bought a roku and already had a gaming rig on another tv coupled with hulu plus, amazon prime, netflix and a few torrents/online channels like revision 3 and two atennas me and my wife had more then enough to watch. A few months ago… Read more
Ton of channels is something that appeal only to the sport-oriented person. I do not watch any sport. Not one. Nada. I had to pay extra to get NatGeo, Discovery and History, because the basic pack does not include them. I got a 100 channel deal but have erased about 80 for they are soccer-oriented. I like DWtv and the… Read more
See, in France, we have bad politicians, but honest-priced TV-Internet-Phone plans. For 45 bucks, we've got illimited internet (20mb/s), illimited phone and great TV, with a really good interface, fluid and easy to use. The set top box is just so great ! Take a look at it : FreeBox Revolution ! It's in french but it's… Read more
Here's the thing. I'm a big motor sports fan so things like NASCAR aren't available on OTA or other *legal* internet sources. Making the choice for cable TV also makes the choice that I'm not going to pay another $10-15/month for content that I can get on cable. It is that simple for me. I really don't like the idea… Read more
No one "needs" cable, especially with way the damned cable monopolies run things. Dish is just as expensive, and suffers from the same problems. There are maybe 10 TV shows I watch, and there are other, much less expensive ways to get them. Yes, I pay about 60$ a month for my Internet (20 MB down, 5 MB up), but… Read more
